Zappa delivers more intelligent coherency in one sentence than the opposing 3-man crew in their whole talk.
This "interview" must be what the inquisition looked like.

To be fair, the host does keep it away from personal as best as he can. And he does ask some questions that are otherwise left hanging. But Zappa lets the frothing guy make assumptions about him (I agree with you Mr. Zappa, that our Families need to be protected). Zappa just uses that as fuel later.

aren't you both frightened and appalled that American society has advanced so little in all these years. You still have these right wing religious fuckwits controlling a large proportion of your populous with their bigotry. I love your country but I find it amazing that whilst it is the most advanced country in many ways it's people are mostly poorly educated and susceptible to the most backward and idiotic ramblings of right wing religious morons and crooks. Even Trump had to at least pretend to be religious in order to be elected. The entire world saw and see trump for what he is and yet a large proportion of Americans were conned by such an obvious orange conman.

+robert glenn I'm sorry but these two elderly gents on the left and the right seemed alright to me(at least in this debate). That Lofton guy was the only bigot. And his is a very insecure nature. Its not "society" he's worried about, its the fact that society wouldn't be the way he wants it to be that irks him, and that's your quintessential right winger :)

Love that one of the points John makes is that Hitler used words, and words can be dangerous. Hitler also was a huge fan of censorship. Eventually newspapers, radio and all forms of media were put under the control of the Nazis. It always starts with censorship.

The show is presented to give the impression of two extremes, but there's nothing extreme about anything Zappa says here. He could be extreme in his views, like the stuff about LSD being a Government weapon against the 'counter culture' (not necessarily untrue but certainly extreme).
Lofton comes across as an anti intellectual and pretty desperate once he quickly realises he hasn't done his homework regarding Frank's intellect. If I was on Lofton's side, I'd be pretty annoyed with his useless shouty comments. The guy couldn't debate his way out of a paper bag. Laughable.

An interesting reminder of the small or even closed, mindedness of some people in I presume, the early 70's. Let's not have an even spread of opposing opinions. Lets have one guy who's opinion we all strongly disagree with, then surround him and berate him incessantly. No wonder this show was called crossfire. That was literally what was happening. Good on you Frank.

Yes America does hide sex, it's restrictive towards sex.
A lot people bought Zappa albums, but he didn't use the money to buy yachts or stick it up his nose, he kept on working right up to his untimely, premature end. Most people didn't know anything about him and his music. They preferred 'audile wallpaper'. Zappa himself was controversial from day one. He was the most rational and down to earth person we've ever known.

When your arguments fail, resort to hyperbole: Frank Zappa as Hitler? "Hot for Teacher" the gateway to the collapse of society? Wow! That guy had an agenda so heavily biased by the right wing that it turns my stomach. I admire Mr. Zappa's restraint and ability to stay focused on what was been discussed and not resort to violence -which I felt myself leaning to by listening to that clown Lofton-. Mr Zappa is an example of defending one's rights in an eloquent, dignified and elegant, even, manner

I was never really a fan of Frank's music but, as with so called "classical music", the more I try to understand it, - the more I listen to it, the more I read about Frank and his music, the more I listen to frank himself and try to get to know the "man" - the more I appreciate the music & the more I get out of the music.Regardless of his limited education frank was obviously a very intelligent and eloquent man. Amazing to think that right wing religious bigots are still making the same stupid points all these years later. Love how when frank makes an intelligent point he's told he's been talking too much.Even though I am still trying to get to grips with Frank's music I had the pleasure a few years ago of hearing his son Dweezil and a kind of all star band including a lot of previous associates of frank perform Frank's music. Seeing the talentless offspring of successful parents try to make money off their parents fame is not my idea of a good night out however this Dweezil chap defied all my expectations. He seems decent and well grounded and his love of his fathers music really shone through. Even though I'm not much of a musician I could appreciate how difficult Zappas music can be and his son proved himself a very talented guitarist. I had come across another of Frank's sons a number of years ago when I lived in America and, whilst I was only in his company very briefly, it was long enough for me to decide that he was an arrogant, annoying, spoiled, entitled dick who's annoying display of uber confidence was the result of having a famous parent and nothing more. Nice to think that that kid was just a complete fuckwitted fuckwit on his own. Can't blame frank for him when he also had a son, (I presume he had a fairly equal influence on both their lives), who seems to be a very decent and is definitely a very talented and hardworking man.

Blaming Rock music for a degradation of society is scapegoating. Degradation starts with the individual and then on how that person is influenced by his immediate experiences. I love Black Sabbath, Mega Death, Rob Zombie and the likes. I have always loved life and focus on its beauty and tolerate its shortcomings. My morality is based on doing unto others as I would hope they would do unto me. The only thing that has ever made my blood boil is people and systems of power and authority that ignore blatant injustices and exploit those who are without a say.

The most profound cultural insights are usually forged from the fires of systemic injustice. There will always be mindless partisans repeating their talking points but deep, deep insight into an issue usually comes from the sort of considerable- perhaps even overwhelming- introspection that is rarely inspired in a ban BUT for his being subject to injustice.
There's no doubt whatsoever that Franks 'obscenity' arrest and subsequent decades of deep though on the issue is what made him who he was.

That second hand smoking bullshit is more of a reevaluation of our rights with respect to each other than the stripping of personal freedom. They say that one person's right to breathe clean air is more important than the other person's right to smoke; if you consider those two rights equal in proportion, then there is no net less in freedom. It's flawed, but a more compelling argument than you think.

When you try to reason with close minded people, i'm not saying you shouldn't...if you have that fighting spirit go for it, but in the end it's just the close minded getting "outraged" at simple things said they talking over you and interupting you, alot of the times for the last word.
