- When it comes to treasures of the Pacific you can't go past the humble ukulele. The very sound of this instrument is synonymous with this part of the world.
Of course places like Hawai'i, the Cook Islands and Tahiti have a very strong tradition and it's making a return to Samoa.
Oscar Kightley takes us to the village of Poutasi in Falealili, Samoa to have a look at this taonga.

The ukulele is really a Portuguese instrument called the Braguinha. The Portuguese brought it over the the islands and Pacific. It’s very popular in Brazilian music too.
Madeira island too ♥️

Great story Thankyou
In American Samoa there is a professor at the American Samoa community college name Kuki Tuiasosopo who created a music class specifically for Ukulele instruments n players. He also made sure there were musicians that would come in and teach different kinds of island strumming. He started this around 2006 would be nice y’all would reach out to him🤙🏼
Nice video I just received one for xmas

Is there any way to buy those lovely ukulele's from overseas?
Kukis are the beast on the ukulele.. There's sound a lot different to these ones tho.
Lol Oscars voice over at the end comes in just before they start to sing
Le afioga i le Toosavili, Tuatagaloa.
🙏🙋😘😍🙏
I wonder why ukulele specifically. Small size 6 string guitar (Guitarlele?) sounds the same but has a fuller range of sound. It’s not like the people who wanted to play couldn’t learn 6 strings instead of 4. So why then?
Tradition I suppose
Plus 4 is easier

Ok, those of you who play, or at least know how to play, Ukelele you have to admit that “somewhere over the rainbow” on ukulele is very annoying and overplayed song. Its not a very good song to start with.
I will admit its overplayed
But it's a good song there's a reason it put the ukulele on the map
It’s a beautiful song, it’s just overplayed.
Not impressed
