Great repair video. But these 30001s/30001rs and 35001 do have like a high failure rate, mainly because those have very shitty lasers inside of them since they 400bs in them. The 39001 or 50001 have much better reliability and lasers since they either came with HD7s or 400cs.
Yea the 400b lasers are garbage. Sony was sued over it and you could get a free repair back in the day. I used to buy them off of ebay and send them in for for free.
I've had issues with 30001/35001 models. One had the black screen of death. No video and no sound. I'm not sure what causes that and if it's even fixable. The other would not read DVD games no matter what I did. It reads everything else though. I tried different lasers, adjusting the height screw, adjusting the white cog, different laser ribbon cables, re-flashing the firmware, different power supply, different discs, etc. Nothing worked. It will not read DVD format games but reads PS1, blue discs, gold discs, movies, and music cd's just fine. I'm guessing one of the chips went bad.
@Austin532 the 35001 is a bad board and if you want to do a cap kit and re flow system management controller those are custom chips and are a BGA package. i have a good board for the 35001 in my parts stash. if you have a 400 style laser. the cpu caps are over 20 years old i have the wiring and service manuals if needed
I have been trying to take apart my Playstation 2 fat I got all the screws out but can't figure out how to take off the top it seems like it is completely stuck.
I've only ever ran the 'station in tower position, never flat. And for as humid as Louisiana is, and dusty as my house is, the rare cleaning has been easy. I stumbled on this vid on the off chance it goes out anytime soon, and the 400c I see are almost pricing me out. Almost. That aside, what rail grease would you recommend? If I have to do a laser swap, might as well lube it when the time comes.

39001 I had to take it apart and replace the magnet cap that lets the discs read

That will happen. Just make sure all screws are out and pull from the back. They are snapped in on the front

White lithium grease, you can get it a the auto parts store
