Written by Frances Ridley Havergal in 1874 as a hymn of “self-consecration to Christ,” the words of ‘Take My Life and Let It Be’ speak of dedication, commitment, and stewardship, especially that of religious men and women. With scripture references from Isaiah 6:8, Philippians 1:20-21, Romans 12:1, and the Gospel of Luke, the song may be sung for ordinations and anniversaries, celebrations with commissioning rites, as a profession of faith, for the dedication of a church or congregation, and, most notably, the Chrism Mass.
