  • Your pet means the world to you, and facing the decision on when it's time to euthanize him or her is a very stressful, emotional time. There is no right answer to "when it is time" -- but there are some guiding factors to help you make this difficult decision.
Dr. Melissa Heenan discusses this sad but important topic in the following video. She explains how when your decisions are made out of love, there really can be no wrong decision. When faced with whether or not to euthanize your pet, it is important to remain objective. She recommends determining your pet's favorite 3-4 things to do, then creating a calendar to track if he or she is doing those things on a daily basis. These could be as simple as jumping on the couch, or running to fetch a ball, or using the litterbox. Monitoring your pet's habits and activities closely will help you determine if they are still enjoying a quality of life.
She also discusses your options post euthanasia -- burial, private or group cremation, and offers suggestions on mementos and other ways to memorialize your beloved pet.

Thank you. I had to make this difficult decision today and this was so helpful. My cat is 16 years old and it was sad to see his decline. I am not looking forward to tonight, but this gave me solace.

Thank you so much for saying the decision is about love and care. Thank you... As I grieve the loss of my lovely little buddy, I will try to remember the decision was made with love and care.. and not wanting him to suffer anymore.

Thank you so much for this. I just let my 14 year old female kitty go an hour ago. I was a mess.

You just see it in the behavior of your pet when it's time. I already had to put 3 cats to sleep. Every time the vet came home to put the cats to sleep. That always happened very peacefully.

I have been battling with this decision for a while now. My 16 YO Kitty has liver disease and IBS he has trouble with balance and is losing even more weight. My sister came to stay for the Christmas holiday she hadn’t seen him for several months and one night she looks at me with tears in her eyes and says “It’s your decision but I think it’s time”. I made an appointment with the vet for Monday. 2 ore days with my sweet boy

My mom refuses to allow my sister to bring peace to her elderly dog due to numerous seizures a day very obvious “frown days” taking over the calendar. I appreciate your resource and hope that it can be helpful for my mother as well.

From prior experience I have found that veterinarians will give you “hope” (expensive testing, invasive procedures, dubious treatments, chemotherapy and blood transfusions, etc) right up until the last breath is taken. Euthanized pets don’t pay veterinarians bills, vacations, kids college tuition or momma’s new fur coat. My parents veterinarian, a well respected practice, milked my 80 year old parents for $2,000.00 to extend the life of a 15 year old Pomeranian in renal failure because my mother neglected to maintain regular teeth cleaning for the dog. I begged her, pleaded with her, offered to schedule and pay for it myself. Unacceptable. But the vet KNEW it was hopeless and just HAD to squeeze out those last charges for his profit margin with emotional blackmail.
Sister took her 17 year old dog in for euthanasia. But first, the vet had to Vaccinate her with rabies and distemper !!!! No lie. I was appalled and wanted to schedule a meeting - but she said no.
I have more stories but won’t bore you. Watch your pocket book and leave your heart strings at home. Don’t allow your pet to suffer because you cant make a decision and your vet needs $$$$$.
Our beloved pets don’t live as long as we want. But sometimes loving is letting go.

I had to put down my 17 year old cat, Tiki, on Sunday and I never put down a pet until then. It was so hard to be at the vet but I wanted to be with Tiki in his last moments. I been with Tiki my whole life, and it’s hard to move on. But I have two other pets (Sarah and Ginger). Sarah was his best bud so we decided to let her say one final goodbye to Tiki. She licked his body’s fur and walked off. I saw on the internet that cats can get really sad when their friends pass on so I know I have to stay with Sarah (and Ginger). Also, the night before we put Tiki down, Ginger (who is a dog, btw) growled at Sarah when she went by Tikis food and water but she didn’t eat it herself so I guess she was protecting Tikis food for him in case he wanted to eat again. We knew it was time because Tiki couldn’t stand up anymore and he was moaning like he was in pain. He looked dead just looking at him. On the way to the vet we genuinely thought a few times he might be dead already until we saw his chest rising and falling a little.

I’m glad you waited until you knew for sure. Sometimes I think I’m being selfish to keep my cat around, but he still purrs when I hold him, sits in his window, and looks forward to eating a little of his favorite foods. He seems sad that his sister is avoiding him…she used to bathe and warm him with her body as he became ill. I read that cats avoid very sick cats, as a primal way of avoiding viruses and predators. My boyfriend thinks I’m crazy to give my 19 year old cat all my attention right now, but he will be ok. My dear feline friend needs to know he is loved, and his suffering is noticed. I have lost pets and people, and as long as I show them how much they mean to me, I have few regrets. 💔

Although her words and advice are excellent, I do agree with Jim (below) the expression and presentation is truly inappropriate. Making presentations like this is neither easy, nor something anyone can do. However her advice is the opposite of heartless. Having seen friends die of cancer, who could express their feelings and wishes, there comes a point where the staying alive is for everyone else, not the patient. That hardest part of having an animal who is that ill, is not knowing how they are feeling. She is trying to advice on that.

Your words are wise and true but our world has become SO dispensable, disposable and egocentric that, even those who 'think' they are making a decision based on what is best for their pet are often consumed by convenience and what's best for the 'owner."

My sister lied to me that the vet doctor was going to clean my dog's teeth but he gave a shot that made her sick penny was healthy and showed no sign that she was in pain so I don't no what they did to her but when she died I had her cremated
