UO Outlands is a free-to-play Ultima Online shard loosely set in the T2A era which launched in October of 2018. Our mission from the onset has been to create a version of Ultima Online which enhances every aspect of gameplay, creating a shard which we believe emulates how Ultima Online should have always been had it stayed the course.
Outlands is hosted professionally on a top of the line machine with redundant cloud backups and the fastest connection available to us. The server location has been chosen to allow players from across the globe to make UO Outlands their home, with low ping from the Americas, Europe, and parts of Asia.

I was one of the earliest players on UO. I went from being a 'noble' player hunting orcs and liches to a full-time PK camping the crossroads outside of Britain and raiding guilds. No games ever come close to the fun UO had offered. It is indeed the greatest game ever made.

Xroads west of Brit! Hoo boy! I remember my first solid time being griefed right at border if that canyon, lol. It was the introduction you need in order to learn not to get too attached to your gear. Thankfully, the guy who managed to pile up about 7 of my corpses stealthing and waiting for me to return and try to madly scramble to click drag all my gear back into my bag took pity and just let me take it. Dude's name was Castillo, and I remember it to this day, haha.

Man so many great memories with this game in Middle school. I remember one time our guild beheaded a GM who forgot to put their invulnerability on and we ran and hid in our castle only to be summoned by him in jail and having him go through our bags. There was a glitch at the time where if you dragged and held an item inside your bag nobody could see it. So the GM found nothing and we remained the only guild on the server who had a GM's head LOL! Got so hyped when they launched Ultima Online, it certainly lived up to expectations! I was never much good at the game but I put the hours in and had a GM thief and a GM fisherman. It took ages but was so much fun fishing for messages in bottles! Those who know will know what I mean haha. Legendary game, thanks for the video. Glad people are still enjoying it.

You had almost the exact same experience as I did with Runescape, memorizing phone numbers and all! I learned of Ultima Online from a retrospective years ago, but when looking into it I thought it was something I had to purchase a subscription for, and for a game with such little players I didnt think it was worth it. However, now that I know that there is a free-to-play server with a relatively sizeable player base, I am 100% going to get into this game!

I ran the original UO client on a 486 with Win95 and 20MB of RAM. And it ran quite good. For us AD&D and roleplay nerds, this game was like a miracle in '97. I remember the game slowing down to a crawl at the Britain bank, where ~200 ppl were hanging around. The bank box would open like half a minute after I spoke the magic words. Rumors were spreading that each UO server was running on a dual Pentium Pro system (unbelievable, wow!). And I remember the feeling when I got my first grandmaster title, after felling thousands of trees and crafting thousands of clocks.

UO led to so much that's happened in the gaming landscape... The Stratics boards, black market online sakes, haha. I remember helping run a dial-up internet cafe with my wife, a Senate candidate, and a couoke other geeks in SLC Utah. Much of the crowd was UO, along with some counterstrike clans, up until the Guild Wars open release event, the dawn of Wow,, etc. We had a local news station come cover the early gaming scene. It was an amazing thing to experience. And it is so great to see UO still alive and kicking. There's just nothing like it.

Hell yes you should. You should play it not expecting a loot hamster wheel, or purely gear dependent gameplay, etc., for anyone UO curious. Heck, there will be times you'll actually go grab some cheap, "disposable" gear because you know you'll be getting into some fights where you may well get your gear looted from your corpse, lol. And you can do the same to others.
UO is a game where you join up in guilds and communities for more than just running a raid... It's for survival in a dangerous world, it's for legit socializing... There be player killers out there! So go find your gang and then get revenge! It's all in good fun!
You have players who can pickpocket you! So learn to keep an eye on your shit! And learn to do it, too, if it sounds fun! And guess what? It makes managing to get something truly cool and rare, surviving while making it back to your house or bank in town where it's safe a massive, memorable time! It's a rush far beyond opening up a raid chest and hoping RNG is kind to you this week like so many other "yawn" games.
UO is loaded with items with no functional purpose other than collection that you seek after simply because they're fun to go chase! Like collecting cards or anything else. Beyond that, there are the ultra rare items that DO have a purpose, too.
UO has many, MANY systems of progression. It's more of a fantasy world Simulator. You're out chopping wood to make arrows.. you have a high tracking skill and a high hiding and stealthing skill. Your tracking for goes off! So you hide. Then you hear galloping. Next, a gang of red murdering player killers ride by on llamas, ostriches, bears, etc, lol. They don't see you. Whew! That was close.. you load up your wood onto your pack animal and get the hell outta Dodge!
Many fun as hell, close call experiences like that, lol. Many deaths to PKs. Many times breathing hard managing to kill PKs and survive. (Like me and 2 others in my guild last night... They picked the wrong targets. We chased each other all around, health going up and down as we fought... Until my pet spider landed a web, PK got stuck, and we buried them, lol. It wasn't a tab and hammer a rotation fight that ended in moments. It was back and forth, running behind walls, us and the enemy trying to outmaneuver until a lethal mistake was made, or a stroke of luck like my spiders web landing with perfect timing.
All in all, you learn to not get too attached to "things". The truly rare things you value the most, you save up to get blessed, or you lock down in your house. Just getting them safely into your bag and hone us a rush and an achievement, and they're now safe.
Really though, the motivation for why you do things in UO is just different. You'll never find a game where just riding around mining and then blacksmithing will be more fun, even if you never even train a combat skill. Build a house, deck out a kitchen, and supply players with the best food in the game. Or potions, weapons, armor, books... They need it! And hunt your meat yourself, grow crops yourself...
There is nothing like UO, and Outlands is the best non official server I've seen.
-Chipette, Grandmaster Shepherd, soon to be Legendary Tamer

We used to ambush people before they opened they’re house…get they’re keys and loot loot loot, some houses became my guilds houses…we usually killed with the crows bow, and the spell reflection spell…once you’re hit with a weak opening spell, we would continue to run around and reapply the spell…this was when the game first came out….we had 2 main characters…one was a dread lord, and the other was a geared mule to go into town to get supplies….dread lords was killed on site, if you got close to any town….the guards would teleport, and bam you’re dead.
Being a PK was fun as hell…we all wore bone armor head gear…and would have guild meetings, and wage war on rich guilds….we were so hated, many guilds would ban together, and Literally hunt for us….they would usually all end up dead’ specially newbies with melee weapons’ we would run around and crossbow them to death.
We once seen lord British…and tried to kill him…he was cheap, and would send us running.

The term PK/PKer/PKing was around before UO. There were a couple other MMO's before UO came out that had PvP, including but not limited to, Meridian 59 and Lineage (I had a Korean cheat sheet at my desk to help me communicate with others).
Now, the people creating M59 and people creating UO talked and shared ideas. M59 saw that UO was doing something they thought was cool, and tried to do something similar, and vise versa.
These 2 games are VERY different styles of games. But there are similarities as well, such as being skill based game, rather than level/class based.
Considering getting back in to UO, and exploring different servers.
    So much Nostalgia! : )

I played this game also in 1997, with original copy, of course. Around 2000 to 2002, I created "Reino Argentino" (Argentine Kingdom, in spanish), one of the biggest Ultima Online' private servers in Latam. I made a custom map (really big), scripts, music, etc. It was great. Good memories. I never had find another MMO like Ultima Online. A lot of younger people talks about World Of Warcraft but, for me, after Ultima Online there is no other MMO that can beat it.

I was one of those kids that grew up playing RuneScape since 2003 and it was the most immersive and enchanting world I could ever imagine. Had always heard about UO but just never played it. Now I shall (: the classic 2d sprite art style really makes me feel cozy.

As a kid back in the old dial-up days, I remember reading lots about UO and wanting to play it a lot. I was really intrigued by the different factions and the idea that they could fight battles over land and castles. Like most of the early MMOs, I never got a chance to try it myself (I'd actually honestly never gotten to play any MMOs until the late aughts, I spent like $150 to get WoW, Burning Crusade and three months of game time, right when Lich King came out. Played for a month and went back to Morrowind and Oblivion since while several of my friends played, they were all hardcore raiders and at the time I hated being glued to my chair for hours at a time) but was always amazed by the depth of possibility.
On the other hand, I'd tried playing Ultima 7 countless times and being blown away by the open world and the level of interaction you could have, but never knowing where to go or what to do and always dying to some random enemy while wandering aimlessly around.
I'm really tempted to try this now just... dear god, the graphics. The interface.

    Neon dyes, neon hair dyes.
Boom boxes to break paralyze spell.
Rare blue and red colored sandals that you got from killing certain vendor NPCs. Not to mention black sandals.
Releasing a tamed dragon or wyrm in Britannia to se it go wild and kill people.

I quickly outgrew one account and started paying for a second account about three months in to playing it. I had almost every profession Gm characters from black smith to animal taming, which was my favorite GM character. Taming dragons and making money hand over fist was so addicting I barely had a life at that point it was sleep, work and the rest UO! I was placing houses and castles and selling them on the shard and then got into selling them on eBay for hundreds of dollars. I was selling houses, gold and even accounts I would make and GM characters on them and making more money selling UO items on eBay than I was at my job! Guys, I remember the days!!! Days and memories that will never be lost!

Wow! I used to play Ultima Online late 90's early 2000's, and lived through the 3D conversion phase. I had three accounts when I had to leave the game due to an unemployment issue and I couldn't fork out the cash month over month rationally. I was clicking through video suggestions on my page, and I thought to myself.. "I wonder if Ultima Online is still even a thing?" So I typed into the UA-cam search and wa-la! I mostly played on Atlantic, Sonoma, but I did have some characters on Europa and Pacific because when one server went down for the night I'd hop time zones and played around the world doing an all day all night run. I loved the player community, and the shared spirit of the world, and I eventually created a Tamers Guild. My first and main account was stocked with GM Warriors, A GM Tamer, GM Mages, GM Tinker, GM Carpenter, GM Smith and a GM Alchemist. I had two Large Houses and a Medium house that came with the account I bought from Ebay I did play on a player server as well, but I had admin powers there, and it wasn't really a challenge anymore, but it was a fun distraction, and it's probably why I gravitated to Skyrim and modding my Skyrim. Yeah, the game was brutal and if you died, you might end up in a kill loop running from the Wandering Healer back to your corpse, just to get killed again by the same creature that killed you initially, or PK'd by someone looting your corpse. There nothing more satisfying than killing the monster that killed you and getting your stuff back from its corpse! The Dev events were awesome and sometimes brutal too, but the loot was good and the community fought and died to save Britainia! I miss Lady Devil, Lady Marissa, and all my UO guildmates, respectfully submitted Lord Ian Fallenhope of the Shard Atlantic.

PK was in use before UO... i remember using the term in diablo 1 multiplayer too.
That got me interested in the origin of the term. A simple Google search gives no definitive answer, but I imagine it originated in Muds from the 80s or early 90s.

I remember long ago, when you could place runes on random lands, and eventually people would build homes on those lands. Then you could loot the entire home

Haha, I played this after the first expansion (still preferred old game client over new 3D one), but mostly on some of the biggest custom server at the time (I forgot the name) leveling up couple of characters.. I remember leveling up smith was very rewarding despite all it's repetition on mining and stuff. I had character with stealth (hiding in shadows) and thieving that was kinda fun to goof around with around the town, but it was hard to level up as far as I remember and wasn't very useful until skills maxed or something, but turned out to increase usability then. Had one simple mage for PvP against those threatening my smith/miner, as it was getting assaulted quite often lol. And then had animal tamer with some combat skills I forgot about, but I was going alone with the tamer mostly and it was really rough - I was trying to kill some monsters that were way out my level with it and it was rewarding to do so when successful, though they didn't always drop the loot I wanted on single session. There was this dragon or drake cave around not insanely far from the main city to tame those... or was it that you could only tame drakes and kill dragons with your tamed drakes, you could've got 2 drakes if I remember, at once? And didn't they increase their stats over time granted they were kept alive. With combining best out of those I'd get custom house on place I wanted and modifying it was really fun, also choosing the place was vital thinking about my crafting characters due mining and stuff. Fun times. Very time consuming game, tho. Lots of depth in this game when it comes to creating different type of characters whether for moneymaking or PvP, or PvE. Getting killed and losing your stuff was brutal haha. Many different classes feel truly unique and useful, plus rewarding too, whether smith, PvE warrior, PvP mage, or animal tamer (damn that was fun to singleplay too lol). Might revisit the game some time perhaps. It's been too long tho.

Great video!! EO was my very first MMO I ever played. Friends from London ON told me about it. I still have that cloth map of the world tucked away somewhere from the boxed game. Lol...I still remember dying fighting a...sheep. So ya, it had a brutally lethal combat system. I also recall the first time I was PKed. I decided to wander as a ghost for a while and entered some PC's house way out in the wilderness. He started talking to me...which freaked me out. Back then I didn't know you could learn the still to see and talk to ghost characters. I will admit I didn't stick with the game for more than a year or so. Moving to Dark Age of Camelot. I might actually see if this old laptop of mine can handle the game. Cheers!

My first MMO back in the day! Got tired of being a great lord and started killing pcs and got to dread lord in just a matter of days. As DL, I ended up becoming friendly with many more people than I had as a GL. 2 people tried to gang up and kill me. I killed them both but guarded their bodies while they came back for their things. We started chatting, and over time they started long-distance dating and eventually got married. All thanks to me! Haha. I'll always remember the early UO days fondly.

PK didn't come from Ultima.... long before that... Meridian59 (the true first graphical online MMORPG) ... though only the original players around during the time of the dawn of internet gaming. Just FYI. 😉 for the old players!

Just started playing again after many years ...haha Sadly my old account must've been lost in the nether... BTW some of the stuff you claimed were originally Ultima Online-based sadly was not. For example, PK (player killer) came from games years prior with PvP "Neverwinter Nights".... but Ultima still had some basis of originality for sure...

Flip I love this game. My "guild" were a bunch of dicks. I remember fishing tens of thousands of fish. Chopping and cooking them adding deadly poison and putting it in stacks in front of the main bank. Log out and back in on another character loot the grey bodies and banknit all. Good times
