i've never been accused of that! have fun, Tony! and go nuts because the underlying data is never touched or modified and never copied. this just creates a specialized view of the basemap showing just what you want.
John, nice video! This was really helpful for a GIS project at my university. I have one question though, is there a way to filter to where only one county is showing? I am trying to look up how to filter that through the JSON, but am having little luck. Any advice?
oh good! hmm, i'm not aware of a way to isolate named features, in this case. You could use another layer to cover up all areas that aren't your country of interest. Here's two ways to do that: Via blend modes: ua-cam.com/video/PuYOzi8zuXs/v-deo.html or via a clipped overlay: ua-cam.com/video/Dshs8BCNAxI/v-deo.html
Thanks, i've been year working in this field and i didn't know i coul've been doing this. It is possible load basemaps from local administrations and editing those files?
ah the googly eyes finish. me thunk my eyes doth deceived me but... alas, no - that, right there, was a classic Python-esque video wrap!!! as if curated vector tile data extraction with .json editing wasn't already enough!!! 👏👏👏👌

Not totally sure what you mean but I selected the first bit until water, then deleted it. Then I selected the last bit back to the end of the water stuff and deleted that. So only the water was left.
At 3:05-3:08 you selected to the last closing bracket after the bathymetry without needing to highlight all the way to the bottom. How did you do that?@@JohnNelsonMaps
Do you know how to make an individual state small populated place disappear? For example Agua Prieta NM every time I try to hide it ends up hiding all labels within that layer@@JohnNelsonMaps
John, you are a rock star! I was able to remove the labels from the basemap using your guidance from this video! A big THANK YOU!
GLORIOUS!
Thank you so much for showing this ! I'm an educator in basic GIS, and my students will be overjoyed that this is possible (and I am too)
cool!
Once again you have opened a whole new door of creative opportunity. Well don, sir!
hey alright! thanks Danny, and have fun!
John Sir, you are super genius. Greetings from J&K (India)
ah, glad it was helpful!
Genius, pure genius. Oh, the potential.

What delicious cartographic alchemy is this?
delicious and nutritious.

Mapping Madness at the end of the video :D
it's a pretty advanced skill i've developed over years of intense training.
So useful! Thanks!
oh good! hope it helps.

great! you can edit any vector basemap in ArcGIS Online this way.
So what can we do if we download that style? I saw that button on the item details page.
This lets you manually edit the style on your machine, and you can then update the style associated with your copy of the basemap (tile layer)
Very nice, thanks!
thanks Carlos!
That's a neat trick
thanks! yeah, came in handy last week building a basemap. i wanted the bathymetry but that's all.
Getting my John Nelson fix away from the UC? YES PLEASE.
Ah I sure miss the UC
@@JohnNelsonMaps Same. Always a good time. Hope to see you there this year.
@@evilrobotguy you won't, unfortunately. but maybe i'll be there remotely?

sometimes it doesn't sound fun to end the video, so i do dumb stuff like that to keep it going a bit. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Can be these exported as vector and raster?
No, they remain a tiled service
Nice
Thanks!
Nelson is king.
Ha!
How did you select all the lines on the JSON to the end without having to highlight it all?

@@gisuser2377 oh, using the shift key, you can select a block of text.
