Very, very cool sir. Was amazing to see how you created the diorama. Looking forward to taking Dr. Wright down in July (or thereabouts) this summer in the Limiting Factor! - Victor V.
Your vids are epic. How can I slice a profile of a mountain slope along a chosen profile line so that I can draw and show below surface geological features and the morphology on the rest?
cool! yes, you can try it on a different location. and try a different color scheme. also you can try different images for your dirt curtain fills. also try a different angle. also maybe a different vertical exaggeration.
the vertical exaggeration applies to the scene, but not the offset distances. so any offset has to be the real depth multiplied by the vertical exaggeration.
@@SelbyKatt good because it confused me at first! i asked the 3D team why it was this way and they said because sometimes you want an exaggerated landscape, but normal height features like buildings, etc. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
it's not a tracing tool, it's just a polygon (insert tab, then choose polygon). i am manually tracing. it is fast because i've sped up the footage of me tracing.
Why did you choose to size your page by points instead of inches or millimeters? Is it just so the rulers are in pts? Is there some advantage to using pts vs in/mm?
Thanks very much for the video. I am wondering: How to arrange several 3D dioramas above each other. I have four subsurface geological layers with different elevations and thicknesses. I dropped each layer into a 3d scene and gave them vertical exaggerations. However, all layers are presented at the same level. Is there a way to assign levels based on top or bottom layer elevations?
Awesome, really awesome, I'm very surprised Jhon; I have a question, can I add a Whale or something other model to do, for example, a Diorama of Whale migration?, congratulations my friend, I'm declared your fan. Best regards Eduardo
i do have a nice developer-grade laptop, but i also skip through the long rendering wait periods for videos so you don't just sit there and watch the circle spin. so it might not be as different as you think.

Can I just say, as a marine geologist, 'dirt curtain' is absolute gold and how I shall refer to sub-surface lithology from this day forward!
YES!!
Same thought from a marine geomorphologist! Cheers!
@@vuphuong86 i'm looking forward to it entering into the literature
This made my day to watch! The depth notches literally were so amazing - it hurt my heart to watch - you are such an incredible artist!
oh gosh, thanks Sarah!
You are my favorite. I'm watching your entire arcgis pro playlist. It makes me want to try out every single tip!!
wow thanks! i hope you give some of them a go and share what you come up with. i'd love to see it.
@8:35 wouldn't 6000 meters convert to 30000m on the map?
yes, i blew it! good eye.
Really thankful for such creative staff which enhance my skill as well
@@AbdurRehman-gg7sn thanks!
Absolutely amazing John. Impressive! Loveit! Specially the final tiny little details of the point glowing...🙌
thank you Aitor!
Woowhoo! Trying this after work! Dang ol’ work! Thank you John!
great! i dare you to do it AT work!
Awesome. I'm going to practice these techniques.
great! look forward to seeing what you make!
Thank you, John! This is great and from here forward, I will label my ground layers as "fake dirt curtains."
Perfect!
YOU NEVER STOP SURPRISING US WITH YOUR WIDE KNOWLEDGE. GREETINGS FROM COLOMBIA. WHAT A NICE VIDEOS.
thanks!
Excellent! So many nice «hacks» and ideas in one project.
thanks!

Thank you Victor! All the best to you and your crew, thanks for your good work!
if i had to do that my self, i would be somewhere in the middle of the process after 28...weeks :) that was pleasure to watch, thanks John
nah, you can do it!
A master class video to close my career in mapping, my friend, Godpseed and "keep on mappin' ". Andrew from Cambridge UK soo to be Colorado Springs CO
thank you Andrew! all the best in your next adventure!
So amazing! Incredible and I'm definitely trying it out!
fantastic, glad you are going to give it a go!
Thanks for the term 'dirt curtains'
it just seems to make the most sense.
Just finished the Cartography MOOC and discovered this you through that! I love this vid
Thanks! Welcome aboard!
Been waiting for this one since you showed a preview on your diorama video!! 😍😍
I hope you try it out!
Thank you for the tutorial! I finally made my own and unlocked many new ideas thanks to it!
ah great! i'd love to see it!
Challenger deep map is out of this world. Outstanding. Thank you for sharing. 🌍🌎
Welcome!

Good job 👍
Thanks!

Always cool

amazing!
Thanks!
you’re an actual genius ….. wow
What! Thanks !
Nice work !! This can be done in arc scene 1.8 ?
hmmm, i don't know the answer to that.
Your vids are epic. How can I slice a profile of a mountain slope along a chosen profile line so that I can draw and show below surface geological features and the morphology on the rest?
thanks! hmmm, i don't know. that's a more complex map. i'd have to try some things to see what works.
I love bathymetry
me too! it's amazing
I prefer showerymetry myself
This is so cool! Definitely trying this one out, could you suggest how differently can I try this?
cool! yes, you can try it on a different location. and try a different color scheme. also you can try different images for your dirt curtain fills. also try a different angle. also maybe a different vertical exaggeration.
I can't imagine... Wow really your are amazing cartographer wow... ❤️
hey thanks! i hope you give it a try.
@@JohnNelsonMaps yes ,obviously sir.... I will do ... 🙂❤️❤️
Thaks for publish.
welcome!
Is there a reason you didn't just make the vertical exaggeration 5 on 'the bottom' layer instead of offsetting it by 5x?
the vertical exaggeration applies to the scene, but not the offset distances. so any offset has to be the real depth multiplied by the vertical exaggeration.
@@JohnNelsonMaps Makes sense, thank you!

it's not a tracing tool, it's just a polygon (insert tab, then choose polygon). i am manually tracing. it is fast because i've sped up the footage of me tracing.
ah good job my congratulations to you. Thank you
Hi, I've made a 3D model inspired by your video. What's the best way to share it with you ?
wonderful! however you like. i've seen many shared on LinkedIn and instagram. or just upload it somewhere and share a link?
Why did you choose to size your page by points instead of inches or millimeters? Is it just so the rulers are in pts? Is there some advantage to using pts vs in/mm?
Good question. I loathe points, but I can easily convert them to pixels. So they’re an intermediate unit.

Thanks! Yes you can add a 3D symbol which can be a whale or submarine or anything you have a symbol for.
When i added my picture of ocean it was not showing, can u tell me the problem?
Sorry to hear that. It’s hard to know what’s wrong
John Nelson has created GIS ASMR
