I think a simple, unscented soap is still my favorite to make and use. There's just something about the smell of an unscented bar that I love. The first soap I ever made was a simple 3 oil soap using a plastic food container as my mold. :) I hope you're all staying well and doing okay! Thank you so much for watching! ❤️
Holly, i so love your soap. i mean i am imagining how gentle it is on skin. I resolved to making my own gentle soap using melt and pour, but as i read the ingredients of it, i see a lot of things that i didnt understand leaving me with an impression it is not gentle either like the commercial soaps. what is your say on melt and pour?
This may be the video that finally cracks my fear and hestitation of soapmaking. Thank you for showing such a beginner friendly and affordable tutorial!
Made this soap again. Love your channel! I made this soap. WOW Great soap, so creamy and a lot of bubbles. I also used a milk carton. This is one of my favorite formulas. Thank you for sharing.
Ms. Holly.... you are a legend. This is where I will begin my soap making journey...... I will be reading all that you suggest BEFORE even getting supplies. Thank you for sharing your talent and the beauty of what you do.
I used this soap for my very first attempt at cold processed soap and so far so good (although I JUST TOOK IT FROM THE MOLD, so we will see, but so far so good! Thank you for your instruction. I would have liked the lye to water mix you made to be included, but I used the calculator and figured it out. Thank you!
Your videos with recipes and showing how to put info in soapcalc have helped me understand soapcalc and the basics of making soap. I your speed and gentle voice is a plus. Thanks for your videos
I love how cartons bow a little and make the shape they do. They're very pretty 😍. Simple soaps are my favorite to see 🥰 Great work and explanations. 😃
There’s always something beautiful about plain white soaps. One of my favourites. Xxx I love tallow/lard based soaps & have made them for a long time. So good for the skin. X
Holly, you are a super star - soap maker!!! I am very drawn to your beauty, simplicity, and very natural process. God bless you for sharing and teaching...☀️✨
Nice video emphasizing safety, while also unveiling the joy of making and using plain unadulterated soap. I made plain soap for my family for years before I ventured into fancy swirls and scents. There’s just something appealing about the scent of soap. Nice creamy, bubbly lather. Only you could make hand washing look so good, lol.
An absolutely great video! I am a new soaper and today I made one of your recipes today! So thankful for you sharing yours, not too many soapers online do...thanks again!
Thank you so much for sharing, Holly! I always enjoy your videos and there is something so beautiful and timeless about an uncoloured and unscented soap. The larger looks lovely too ☺️
You know that milk carton actually gave a nice shape to the bar of soap. The cookie cutter would make a great shape for a shave bar. A plain bar of soap, just the natural color is always a favorite of mine.
I love using milk cartons for molds. I like the shape and it always brings back memories of my first few batches of soap. :) Thank you so much for watching, Renee!
Holly I made this soap today...it is beautiful. It took a long time to trace. It was such a pleasure to stick blend. Thank you for all you wonderful videos and sharing your knowledge.
Holly, these look fantastic, there's just something special about a simple soap! And your photography and film editing is awesome! Total goals! I had to laugh because I'm in the process of editing a "grocery store soap" video too 🤣
Another beautiful video and soap Holly. I've had a very stressful few days and was feeling quite tense, just listening to you and watching your beautiful video has made me feel lighter :-)
Less is more! Thanks for sharing, Holy. Always love your videos and your soaps. Always classy, stylish and professional👌😘 Greetings from Pretoria, South Africa 💟💖😗
Bonjour Holly, Une belle mousse pour ce savon, avec des produits facile a trouver. merci. Hello Holly, A nice foam for this soap, with products easy to find. thank you
Hi Holly, i love your soap videos! I like the lard recipe and was wondering if i wanted to add castor oil to the recipe what % would you do and wgat oil would you cut back on? Thanks!
Hi holly am a huge fan of ur simple soapmaking .. I prefer to replace water with milk... can I do that in this soap? We dont hv lard here so planning to use palm oil instead.🙂
Thank you for watching! Yes, you can definitely make this a milk soap instead. The first soap I ever made was identical to this one except I used palm oil instead of the lard. It was a wonderful soap. 😊
Lovely! Thank you so much for sharing. You make it looks so easy. When I'm ready to start cold process soap, I will definitely try this!🤗 Be well and stay safe.
I agree, the simple soaps are just so nice.. I think my favorite recipe is a high olive Bastille type, with a touch of coconut and castor, with some type of milk, with honey and oat flour..Leaves such a nice natural sweet scent.. I used to make recipes with lard, which helps make such a nice soap, but I seemed to have a slightly piggy smell left in the cured bars..Fragrance oil would cover it best, but essential oils, not always..I always tried to heat the lard slowly and not too hot.. Also, it seemed late soaps created more soap scum and sometimes a film on my skin? Ever noticed this?
Holly, you do these videos with such excellence and beauty. Thanks so much for sharing. Is there an affiliate link for the stainless steel beaker-type containers you use? I’m so happy to order thru people who are so good at helping other people. You’re the sweetest.
Your soaps are so amazing! Even the simple ones🤗 The others are so ....artistic that while watching I totally forget that they are soaps❤️ I’m going to use your recipe for the simple soap, though I use hot process hope it turns out beautiful as well!🤗
I just found this video, THANK YOU SO MUCH! I have made a few melt and pour bars but really wanted to be able to try cold process without breaking the bank, my question is can you add like oatmeal and scents to this recipe? Without ruining the outcome?
So nice and simple video. Thank you so much. One question about the hardness. Have you used any ingredients to make the soap hard and maintain the hardness while using in water ? I had made some soaps but it’s getting very soft once the water touch the soap.
Thank you! No, nothing other than just time. Usually takes 4 to 6 weeks for the soap to dry out and get hard enough to last when used, but it can sometimes take longer if you use a higher percentage of water or if you're making something like a castile soap (100% olive oil).
Holly - Kapia Mera Soap thank you so much for the reply. Delighting ..One more question please..😀😀😀 Do I need to use food grade caustic soda for soap making?? I had used normal caustic soda flakes which is quite cheap in price.
I love it Holly! Unscented soaps are the best for my skin, eczema and all. Did this soap give a moisturizing effect as well? I'm finding my soap that I made at 6% superfat was nice on my skin, better feeling and didn't make me feel dried out. Thank you Holly, I always look forward to your videos. Stay well. 🥰💞😊
Thank you! My skin didn't feel dry at all after using it...felt really nice. However, if I had dry skin issues, I might lower the coconut oil in this recipe to 20-23%. A 6% superfat is a great idea, too. Hope you're doing well!
What percent did you so please? Do you find it drying at 25% CO? I've always been to nervous to use over 15% lol. I got distracted last time I made lard soap so I want to try again using this formula if you didn't experience dos. It could've been an older box of lard since I had to get it from a wholesale local frozen food store. Thank you for sharing!
I don't blame you. If you have really dry skin or are just sensitive to coconut oil, it can be really itchy and drying in higher percentages. As I mentioned in my other response, I'm okay with 23-25% but I don't have any dry skin issues. I'd definitely use less if I did. I haven't had any DOS issues with the lard I purchased from the grocery store. I did use some older sunflower oil once and sure enough got them. So aggravating! Thanks for watching!
Please disregard my SF question. Idk why I didn't see it in your description when I read it 😃. Still curious though of whether the 25% CO is drying to the skin or not.
No problem! I definitely won't use anymore than 25% and actually prefer my recipes with 23% coconut oil during the winter months. I've tested different percentages and find the 23-25% range is fine for my skin. However, anything above that and my skin gets itchy dry. If I was someone with particularly dry skin year round, I'd probably even try 20%.
Hi, that’s a great question and yes, I have actually once. I purchased a bottle of olive oil that didn’t have a date on it and smelled like it wasn’t fresh (smelled like old oil). I should have known better and ended up with orange spots in a few soaps within weeks. As long as the oil is within its “sell by” date or it smells fresh, I haven’t had any problems though. I’ve used the Bertolli Extra Light olive oil for years with no issues. Thanks for asking!
Yes, it takes about 4 to 6 weeks for as much water to evaporate as possible and the soap to be hard enough to last when it's used. If you used a high water amount (what some soapmakers refer to as full water), it may take the full 6 weeks. After about 3 to 4 weeks, I'll press the side of a bar along an edge and check for hardness. If they don't dent, I usually assume they're ready. Of course, this applies to recipes like the ones I use in most of my videos. If you make a castile soap (100% olive oil) or a recipe with a really high percentage of liquid oils compared to hard oils, the cure time can take much longer for the soaps to harden (up to 6 months or more for castile). Hope this helps! 😊
Yes certainly - look at Holly’s notes for the alternative she offers. She has already given the answer. Also sustainably grown Palm Oil can replace the lard too. x
How do you avoid soft bars? I’d use sodium lactate to create a firm bar and still my bars are not “ready to unmold” with 24-48hours then. Any suggestions?
The three things that cause me issues with softer soaps are: water amount too high (I use a 33% or 35% lye concentration most of the time), percentage of liquid oils in recipe is high (most of my recipes are closer to 50-50 liquid to hard oils), and making sure the soap goes through gel phase so it's harder after 24 to 48 hours. Hope this helps!
Hi, I am not the creator of the video, but if you look in the description box it lists the alternative recipe without the lard. Olive Oil - 45% Coconut Oil - 25% Shea Butter - 20% Cocoa Butter -10% Hope this helps 🙂.
I think a simple, unscented soap is still my favorite to make and use. There's just something about the smell of an unscented bar that I love. The first soap I ever made was a simple 3 oil soap using a plastic food container as my mold. :)

I never thought to use a round cookie cutter, brilliant! I always wanted round soaps, but never bought round molds..
I usually make part of my water ice cubes. It really does reduce lye fumes by a TON!!
That's a great idea! It definitely reduces the fumes!
Fab narration, Holly! Honestly, unscented soaps are really the way to go. Fragrances tend to dissipate anyways.
Thank you!!
Me being a newbie, your videos are very helpful! Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge and experience!

Love from Kenya 🇰🇪.

The lather really is amazing! Thank you for watching!

I live the lard in my soaps. It makes the best moisturizer soaps. I hardly have to use lotion. Great video
Hello Holly!! Thank you for your awesome and easy to follow recipes. Is it okay to add powdered milk to this recipe...like in the oil?
So good for the quality and the simplicity 🥰 thanks so much

Oh, I'm so glad it worked for you! Thank you for watching and for letting me know! 😊 💕
How long does the soap have to cure after it sits out for the 48 hrs? Is it just the usual 4-6 weeks? Or is it ready immediately after? Thanks :)
4 to 6 week cure. It is wonderful. Creamy and bubbly...

thanks for the video! i just started learning on how to make soaps, and always wondering if there is any way to not buy silicone mold. thanks heaps!
You're welcome! I'm so glad you found it helpful!
I went to your links regarding the lye amounts.. unfortunately i couldn’t get it.. i am very novice trying to use your lovely recipes.
Thank you🌹
How much water and lye? Tries to use your recommended soap calculator.. but it was kinda confusing. Thanks..great video tho
Hi there, I have mainly coconut oil and palm oil, what would be your recommended ratios with lye?
At which temperature did you combine the oil and the lye, and how long will it cure
Thank you very informative

Thanks for your soap recipe, good contents. Can you tell me about Lard? Is it oil or butter?
It’s animal fat. Butter if solid, Oil if liquid. It’s 100% fat,.
This looks like a great recipe! I love using lard and tallow in my soaps, even though I swear I smell a bacon-y smell in my soaps when I use lard.😂😂

Hi my name is Louis just wan to ask a question between low temperature soap an high temperature soap which one is good
Hello, Do you ever experience DOS using oils from the supermarket?
Hi, that’s a great question and yes, I have actually once. I purchased a bottle of olive oil that didn’t have a date on it and smelled like it wasn’t fresh (smelled like old oil). I should have known better and ended up with orange spots in a few soaps within weeks. As long as the oil is within its “sell by” date or it smells fresh, I haven’t had any problems though. I’ve used the Bertolli Extra Light olive oil for years with no issues. Thanks for asking!
Thank you... 👍💕💕💕
Holly, after the soap sits out for 48 hours, does it have to cure for 4-6 weeks? Thanks :)
Hope this helps! 😊
Holly - Kapia Mera Soap This helps a lot! Thanks so much :)
Have u applied any non sticky layer coating inside paper mold
What is the measurements for lye and water, please.
Can I substitute the lard for another oil like coconut?
Yes certainly - look at Holly’s notes for the alternative she offers. She has already given the answer.
Also sustainably grown Palm Oil can replace the lard too. x
Maam please make some Dettol soap cause my skin is irritated off allergic.
Holly how much lye n water
Por favor , alguém poderia me dizer quanto de água e de hidróxido de sódio.?? Grata!!
@@hollysoapmaking thank you!
I enjoyed your soap making.. Do you sell them?
Thank you! No, I don't sell soap anymore, but thank you for asking!
How much lye is used?
Madam, Instade of lard which Oil is to be used . please share the percentage.
Hi, I am not the creator of the video, but if you look in the description box it lists the alternative recipe without the lard.
Olive Oil - 45%
Coconut Oil - 25%
Shea Butter - 20%
Cocoa Butter -10%
