- Henrietta Lacks, a Black woman, died in 1951 after being treated at Johns Hopkins Hospital, where her cancer cells were taken from her body and studied without her knowledge or consent. Now her family is suing a pharmaceutical company over the use of her cells, which form an immortal ‘cell line’ that reproduces endlessly outside the body, and has been used extensively in tests ranging from drug development to space flight. Yet, her heirs have received no compensation. Ron Lacks, grandson of Henrietta Lacks, and Benjamin Crump, attorney for the Lacks Family, join Joy Reid on the lawsuit.

It gladdens my heart to see people fighting for what was stolen from them. I hope the family gets billions.
@Robert Leewell what I mean is why should a pharmaceutical company make trillions out of cells that were harvested and duplicated and sold without permission and the family of the woman who the cells were taken from get nothing at all? Be left in poverty? That's theft. It's like body snatching. These were her cells. They had no permission to take them and no permission to use them.
Having made this discovery, they should have gone to the family but, as usual when it comes to Black people, they just took what they wanted because they think it's their right, and made huge profits out of it.
You might think well, the family wouldn't have known about those cells and, even if they had, they wouldn't have had the knowledge to understand the potential for medical research and innovation. I would argue that without her cells, tens of trillions of dollars of innovation globally would not have happened.
The family needs to be paid billions. It's the right thing to do.
BTW, we don't like to be called Blacks. We are Black people.

@Robert Leewell It's not that simple and if you are limiting the scope of this issue to the cultural characteristics of black people you are sorely deceiving yourself.
For the Government or Pharmaceutical companies to profit in any way from some unique and measurable biometric trait of a person or family tree of persons is a very bad precedent for legitimizing the exploitation of the very bodies of individuals living, supposedly, under the protections of the Civil Liberties provided by the Constitution and Bill of Rights. Observe the various Privacy Acts.
This situation with some portion of Ms Lacks bio-signature being procured, harvested and then commercially distributed by big business is a perilously good example of how trafficking in flesh, i.e.--from organ harvesting to wholesale trade in human bodies, alive or dead, gradually becomes rationalized by the very laws intended to protect us all from such grotesque exploits.

My mom knowingly donated her body to science. She chose that path. So we didn't expect anything in exchange. What this family has gone through is criminal. I hope they receive compensation.

What does being poor have to do with anything? Their mother's cells were taken without her permission and pharmaceutical companies have been compensated billions of dollars, while the family has received nothing. How is that fair? Let me also say for decades enslaved black women's bodies were experimented on and used by white male doctors to advance modern medical procedures and techniques. They had no rights and were treated horribly without pain medication as it was thought and still thought today that black women can tolerate pain.
This family may not be poor, but I bet they had to work every day for what they have. That's not rich. They need $.

They’ve already reached a settlement back in 2013 and have since received numerous awards, money, status, and recognition. What else could they possibly want?
Lee Irby The WHO has awarded them with recognition in her part of medical history and there have been movies and books written about her. Her family likely receives royalties from those. In addition, Howard Hughes Medical Institute has made a six-figure donation to the family estate and there was a settlement between the family and the NIH regarding the use of the HeLa cells’ genetic code.
Lee Irby And they have also made significant sums of money through documentaries, books, WHO recognitions, and donations from medical institutions. They can’t lie in court, but they can lie before the cameras. Asking for anything more just seems as though they’re hooked on the money and they just want more.

Polio vaccine, multiple cancer treatments, AIDS cocktail treatment, HPV vaccine, COVID-19 research, the list goes on and on and on. I read the book about this years ago. I could not believe what happened. This family deserves multiple billions of dollars. What her cells did for the medical community and society at large is incalculable! I highly recommend the book: The Immortal Henrietta Lacks…by Rebecca Skloot.
We love you Mrs. Lacks! I know of her story and am so heartbroken of her horrific treatment. I hope she can be laid to rest.
@Robert Leewell Excuse me but you never read the book about her then. The radiation treatment she had at JH left her skin freaking black as coal in some areas. They kept inserting these special capsules up her private area to help fight the cancer. While she was awake. How would that not be horrifying?

There probably won’t be a permanent monopoly on this, since it may go against trade practices and would give them the power to determine who lives and who dies. In the best case scenario given their victory, I’d imagine them having to be paid patent royalties from 1951 to 1971, but copyright royalties from 1951 to 2047 in the worst case.
A friends daughter graduated from Johns Hopkins and works there as a researcher. When he asked her about HeLa cells she said she works with them ever day but had never heard of Henrietta Lacks. What happened to her and her family is shameful.

John's Hopkins should also be sued for the pain and suffering and causing the progression of Mrs. Lacks death.

Hahaha are you insane? How much money the family invested actually in keeping those cells alive? That’s what is expensive and that’s why companies have to charge you if you buy this or any other cell lines. Omg 😆. You have to pay a whole staff of scientists specialized in the subject to simply put the cells in the perfect condition to keep the cells alive and growing. And all these years saving the cell line in a special -80 Celsius degrees freezer, so the cells don’t dye. Just for the electricity bill it would be expensive to care for those cells. If the company decides that all those expenses are not going to be profitable anymore, they just put those cell vials in the trash and there you will have your immortal person. Is that what the family wants? I would keep the honor to have my mom helping science just by one cell saved from the trash many years ago.

When you check in, there's a bunch of "boiler-plate" forms you sign...unless you write something up AND give it to them (religious, for instance) it protects them from oops.
If your condition or what they are doing for you changes, more paperwork.

It's been around for YEARS...if you sell someones BODY PARTS, even "giving" them expecting a return, you have to have permission.
They made money. If they had done the research and then GIVEN the information to the world, they'd be half covered. But they didn't even do that.

I did know of Henrietta Lacks prior to this, but I had never seen her before. She is stunningly beautiful - inside and out. It was such a violation to harvest and use her cells without her knowledge or consent, and her death was surely a huge loss to her whole family and community. That such huge advances in science and medicine could be made because of what was taken from her is surely a blessing for humanity. But that she wasn’t offered the simple respect and decency of the scientific community ASKING her, well that surely does put a blemish on the scientists and corporations. This family is certainly owed a good portion of the profits from the use of their mother’s / grandmother’s miraculous cells. Bless Henrietta and her family. 💜
I just finished Ron's book. The Lacks family is amazingly inspiring. Ron pulled no punches in exposing Rebecca Skloots' dishonesty. The entire planet earth is indebted to Henrietta Lacks. It would not be hyperbole to say she prevented an apocalypse.

That one doctor at John's Hopkins did this. He took that sample from her tumor and quickly noticed the unstoppable replication. He then shared the cells with other labs, and the rest is history.
@@topgrain He did it in good faith, though. He never made a dime on it and shared it with anyone he could to help with medical research (which was standard practice at the time). The problem was when it began to be mass produced by a for profit company, and the family had no idea.
When they found out how much money they were making, they took the job of packaging and shipping them across the United States from the science students at Tuskegee.
Every biology major and pre-med student used HeLa cells in their schooling, past, present, and future. The debt owed this family is incalculable. They should be given whatever they ask for, plus an apology from us all.
Pay the family this is as bad of the African American couple who had a resort on California beach the state seized the property stating it was needed for highways the property sit there for 30 years then it was destroyed with no highway or anything done to it. Now there's a lawsuit for racial discrimination to pay the great grandson

@@paulafigueroa1573 That’s not true. The author did an excellent job at explaining both sides of the situation and how there is no easy answer, especially since so many decades have passed. She makes an excellent point that simply stopping all use of HeLa would completely cripple medical research. I thought she also did well at detailing how Dr. Gey simply wanted to further medical research and find a cure for cancer. He never made any money at all from her cells.
i remember learning about HeLa cells in biology in college. the professor fully explained this history of the cell line to us, and we all acknowledged how wrong and unjust that seemed, and then the prof showed us how to buy these cells online for research purposes :/

I hope her family is not only compensated for past "theft" by biotech and pharmaceutical companies, but continues to be paid in the future, as Henrietta's genes will continue to be used. The family owns the "copyright" on Henrietta's genes, not some biotech company.

They generally argue against reparations because they do not know who is actually owed but here they know who deserves payment but still no compensation. Always a moving target.

The bigger issue is who should be paying them. The original company that commercially produced HeLa doesn’t exist, and so many different entities have made use of them that it becomes a very nasty legal puzzle. :(
@@smooshiebear80 much like other law suits, the family should be paid a proper sum, owed jointly and severally by all parties who benefited and they can then fight to determine their percentage of the liability amongst themselves.

I kinda remember hearing about this when I was younger. Why did they find her cells so fascinating? Did she have rare blood type? Good to see that her family is fighting for her and her cells. 💯 I hope that they receive a huge windfall !
There was a book written about this whole 'escapade' by Rebecca Skloot. It was difficult to put down but it really was appalling the lack of care she received. I have to wonder if she had been white would they have taken her cells without asking?
