  • Hi, this video shows you how to read your water meter, check for leaks on your side of the water meter and how to shut off the water supply into your property so you can repair/replace the main stopcock. The external water meter in the video was submerged in water so I also show you how to empty it out.
    Many thanks Vince

    Very informative. ..I read my meter because I often get estimated bills and if you read your own meter you know how much water you use and get correct bills...

    Thanks for taking the time to make this video. I turned my stopcock off when we went on holiday recently. When I turned it back on I have developed a dripping leak. Great tip about isolating the meter. Got plumber coming today. Hopefully he can fit a lever isolating valve under the sink as I don't have great dexterity in my hands.

    "Good value"? Water is god given, fair enough paying for the delivery system but nothing more tbh. Helpful video!

    Excellent video.
    The only thing (perhaps) you could have mentioned was the 'spinny thing' that shows if you have water flowing at that moment. It's a useful indicator.

    it is good that you mentioned, to turn off the water supply when you go away, for awhile,
    especially in the winter, I went to a ground floor maisonette, and there was water coming through the ceiling from above, the water had frozen, and then when it melted, it had burst the water supply pipe above, but the people upstairs had gone away on holiday, so I could not access it, to turn the water supply off. it would have been good to turn the water off, and drained the stored water,,,, or left the heating on, just at 5 degrees, to protect the water, and the people down stairs, who lost thier ceiling etc.
    I wish my ground water level was high constantly, and my home would not be subsiding, and cracking up.
    thanks for your straight forward info.

    I take a photo of my meter once a month so I have evidence of the readings; it only takes a minute and prevents misreadings etc. Someone I know had a leak which just flowed into the WC bowl in the spare loo. The meter reading was estimated for months and they got a real shock when they got the bill based on an actual reading. The water company were not interested!

      some of these modern siphons leak internally into the pan, and overflows should be positioned, so that you are aware of what's going on, so that you will do some thing about it.

    So if I turned off the water from valve outside my path at the meter (external valve) could the meter reading ever increase with that valve turned off completely? Many thanks x

      do you mean " Thames water " does Thames Water read your internal meter ? there maybe an external meter you do not know about, have you tried turning off the water supply valve, by the meter, and then leave it for a week, and see if it has changed, you could have a leak, but not know where it is, if watter is going through the meter it must be going some where, some toilet cisterns have internal over flows, so you may not know, with out looking.even a little leak, can use up a lot of water, given time.

    Vince, I live in a block of flats and I've noticed my water bill for this year has shot through the roof. I want to take a meter reading, but there are 8 meters outside my property and the serial numbers are illegible on all of them, so I've no idea which is mine and Wessex Water have been fuck all help. Have you got any suggestions as to how I can figure out which one's mine? Cheers!

    • @bernardbernard2760
      @bernardbernard2760 4 роки тому +1

      Mr Thunderwing.........only thing you can do is, turn each stop valve of to you find out which one is yours.
      Best to get another person to stay in your flat , turn water tap on, and with you outside turning of the stop valves.
      When the water is turned of in the flat, your helper will let you know that it is of. . Problem solved.

    I have a digital water meter. There are NO red numbers (they are all black). The numbers are 000001,653
    So do I just write down all the numbers that are BEFORE the comma, like this 000001 ??

    I don't use water in the house but. Why my meter number keep changing going up and bill going uo

    • @daibhiseaghdha153
      @daibhiseaghdha153 2 роки тому

      are they estimated readings ? if it's going in through the meter, it is going some where, you more than likely, have a leak in the pipe under the ground, between the meter and your house, which is your responsibility, if you are the property owner, try turning the water supply off at the meter, and see if it is still rotating through, there a little wheel with spikes on it,, or if you have a toilet cistern which has an internal overflow, which goes through the siphon, straight in to the toilet pan.

    My place isn't metered yet I wonder if Id save money or not..I just get a standard bill of £31.67 a month regardless of how much or little I use.

    • @Mymatevince

      I think most households would save money if less than 4-6 people live in the house and if you don't water your garden constantly. I changed to a meter when I moved because they wanted over £500 annually and I save a couple of hundred pound without even watching my water usage (baths etc.), but my garden is tiny with no need to water anything. It is nice when you are not on a meter to not have to worry about filling a paddling pool and hosing down the car etc. but saving £200 is nicer :-)

    Not a good idea to use a sponge to take dirty water out. My occupation is a meter reader and sometimes their can be needles down there discarded by addicts and also water born diseases. Only use a pump to pump water out.

    Its not good value, since you have to accept the water they supply you whether you can afford it or not, as they will not turn off your supply and in the uk you have absolutely no alternative, but to just keep paying regardless of whether you are happy with your supplier or not. I might add the boss of thames water earns in excess of 1million a year. and it rises annually along with your bill.

      Double check for a leak somewhere. Sometimes toilets overflow into the actual bowl so you may never notice that one is constantly leaking until you start getting a scale build up. Years ago most toilets overflowed outside so you would see the water coming out of a pipe and know something was wrong but newer toilets are designed to leak down the toilet so an overflow pipe is not needed, downside is it can be harder to spot when the water filling up does not stop :-)
