    Built a power plant for the Navy. We had two of these beasts installed about 6 feet apart. When they were running, it was so loud, you could actually feel the sound vibrations in your chest. And they had remote radiators, so no radiator fans on the engine. Even with ear plugs, plus ear muffs, they were LOUD!

      Can you move next door to me? We can share the fuel costs. I have a very, very soft spot for the 3516s, very reliable engines even when pushed to 2.7MW (or even 2.75MW for a short amount of time). The C-175 is practically silent and now I have no idea if we're testing or on the gennies as there's no turbo scream that you can hear 2 miles away.

    Goodnite, that engine put out more smoke in 1/4 of a second than my Detroit Series 60 has so far in its 21-year life. I bet with an Eaton-Fuller 18-speed overdrive, you could move mountains with this beast.

      the gearbox and clutch will melt at this load , mining trucks with this engine use electric drive train like a diesel electric locomotive they have ac motors mounted to the wheels and the throttle controls the frequency of ac wave into the motor which is generated by an inverter in older days the motors were dc and generator field would be controlled to increase or decrease power but the control was limited with that setup . mechanical drive is not possible at these powers only hydro and electric can handle this reliably ..

    I saw a demonstration a few years ago, where the genset can be synced with the grid to feed back in to the grid during times of high demand. Just needs a minuscule change in speed for a split second to match up. It’s a measure of how accurate feeling is that it can run a continuous speed that is so precise.

    • @Stasiek_Zabojca
      @Stasiek_Zabojca 9 місяців тому +3

      Once it's synced, then power grid will keep it synced. If so small generator (compared to big power grid) was about to lose sync, it will start being pulled by the grid to catch up. Theoretically in extreme condition, if you kept generator connected but shut down the engine, it could start acting like a motor to turn the engine.

    hi great video, how does load bank testing work, i understand you do something with the alternator/generator so that the engine has to work harder

      @slamdvw 3 роки тому +6

      It is basically a very large electric heater. Yes, it is to provide load for the alternator to load the engine.

    No one noticed that this unit is full commercial? Never hook this unit to your house. You’ll blow all your appliances out. This one pushes 277/480 volts 3 phase

    • @Ghauster
      @Ghauster 3 роки тому

      Any competent electrician should know how to split the phases up to give you 240 and 120.

      Your right, however you know as well as I do that they sell chain saws & generators at Home Depot, Lowe’s & other home improvement stores. They never ask the buyer if they will read ALL the precautions associated with the product & implement strategies to prevent self harm or mass harm? I never see anyone leave the store with a set of chaps or an electrician helping them hook it up? I see it time & time again unfortunately as a lineman for the local power company.

      You would probably use a step down transformer, but the generator might also be rewirable to 110/208. I think they do this by combining some of the coils in either parallel or series as each phase has multiple coils that line up.

      @rrknl5187 3 роки тому +2

      If it's presently 277/480 and it's 12 lead, it can be re-connected for 120/208. You'll need to adjust the voltage regulator a bit.
      At 120/208, this unit would deliver nearly 7,000 amps per phase.
