  • Here we prepare some sodium nitrate from calcium ammonium nitrate based cold packs and sodium hydroxide. If you enjoyed this video, check out some of my others and drop a like and subscribe for more!
    Some activities demonstrated in this video may be dangerous to replicate and should NOT be attempted by individuals at home. While chemistry is very enjoyable, safety must always be number one concern and doing research is very important before trying the reactions themselves. This video is solely intended for educational purposes and should not be replicated in any way shape or form at home.

      I wouldn't use this product for precious metals refining. Not without further purification. And even after that and mixing with Sulfuric Acid, how would you get rid of the Sodium Sulfate or Bisulfate or whatever is going to be the byproduct? Distillation?

      @@IRFedajkindistillation would be the route and is pretty easy to accomplish. Most contaminants will be removed in thd refining process anyways if it is followed properly.

    Reactions process better in dilution , if you make solutions of Amonium nitrate and add NaOH solid the reaction will proceed way better and will get to better completion level now if u make solution of sodium hudroxide much better

    Hello, can you please share the formula you used for this or how you knew how much of each chemical to use? I’ve been trying to make calcium nitrate and potassium nitrate from the calcium ammonium nitrate and calcium/potassium hydroxide but I just cannot figure out the exact formulas since every website gives me a different formula for the C.A.M. Im gonna go insane from all of the different trials and calculations 😭

    Could you not have done this with a distillation setup with a sep funnel or pressure equalization funnel slowly dripping the water and have the ammonia bubble into some water? Why didnt you do this?

    Is it possible to do this in a 3-neck flask and bubble the gas trough water and make ammonia solution?

    • @johnladuke6475
      @johnladuke6475 3 роки тому +1

      Yeah, your idea sounds like the fancy way but if you've got any method to capture the gas and pass it through a bubbler, it should make aqueous ammonia, and also cut down on the breathing hazards. If you don't want ammonia for anything you could still neutralize it through a chemical bath.

      One can only guess in this case but some re-crystallization and filtering cycles can improve the purity ... yet decrease the yield.

    You can get potassium hydroxide from ash

    • @IRFedajkin
      @IRFedajkin Рік тому

      A very small amount if any directly. Despite of many people's opinion the main compound in the ash made from hard wood isn't Potassium Hydroxide but Potassium Carbonate. Yes, you then can calcine the Potassium Carbonate to Potassium Oxide and then make Potassium Hydroxide by mixing the product with water, however this takes time and money. However, maybe Potassium Carbonate can be used directly to substitute Calcium and Ammonia in their Nitrates.

    • @glennredwine289

      9/10kg.

    • @IRFedajkin
      @IRFedajkin Рік тому

      What is the final product you're looking for? Sodium Nitrate? Any nitrate made from a less reactive element than Sodium should theoretically work.

    • @amarendranathhazra4142
      @amarendranathhazra4142 11 місяців тому

      Calcium nitrate, potassium nitrate(not the reaction shown in the video), magnesium nitrate etc

  • @DorsetMushroomHunter
    @DorsetMushroomHunter 2 роки тому

    what happens to the Calcium?

    • @IRFedajkin
      @IRFedajkin Рік тому +1

      In my opinion the Calcium Nitrate will react with Sodium Hydroxide to make Calcium Hydroxide and Sodium Nitrate. Calcium Hydroxide is very poorly soluble in water, therefore will get filtrated out ... and the small soluble part will just contaminate the final product.
