- Here we prepare some sodium nitrate from calcium ammonium nitrate based cold packs and sodium hydroxide. If you enjoyed this video, check out some of my others and drop a like and subscribe for more!
Some activities demonstrated in this video may be dangerous to replicate and should NOT be attempted by individuals at home. While chemistry is very enjoyable, safety must always be number one concern and doing research is very important before trying the reactions themselves. This video is solely intended for educational purposes and should not be replicated in any way shape or form at home.

Thanks for the support!
it's funny how it got slow down right after you said "looks VERY exothermic"
Best simple recipe. Can't by nitric acid to refine my gold and silver scrap so I will make my own, thanx.👍
I wouldn't use this product for precious metals refining. Not without further purification. And even after that and mixing with Sulfuric Acid, how would you get rid of the Sodium Sulfate or Bisulfate or whatever is going to be the byproduct? Distillation?
@@IRFedajkinnv
@@IRFedajkindistillation would be the route and is pretty easy to accomplish. Most contaminants will be removed in thd refining process anyways if it is followed properly.
With that much ammonia being produced aren't the neighbors going to get curious?
Put in a jar and hook a hose up to another jar without a lid filled with hcl
Reactions process better in dilution , if you make solutions of Amonium nitrate and add NaOH solid the reaction will proceed way better and will get to better completion level now if u make solution of sodium hudroxide much better
What got you first interested or started in amatuer chemistry?
Hello, can you please share the formula you used for this or how you knew how much of each chemical to use? I’ve been trying to make calcium nitrate and potassium nitrate from the calcium ammonium nitrate and calcium/potassium hydroxide but I just cannot figure out the exact formulas since every website gives me a different formula for the C.A.M. Im gonna go insane from all of the different trials and calculations 😭
Thank you dude !
But how you know how to make a receipt
Could you not have done this with a distillation setup with a sep funnel or pressure equalization funnel slowly dripping the water and have the ammonia bubble into some water? Why didnt you do this?
That's how I do it. You don't waste any of your material, and get two useful compounds.
This might just be me, but I don’t think this person is a certified chemist, nor has a distillation apparatus
@@zinovyrozhestvensky3636 Give it 10 years and you will need certification to live
@@keymaster2108 you already do. all births are supposed to be registered. without that birth certificate, it's almost impossible to do anything in civilised world.
soon you wont beable to live at all if you have a birth certificate.
home birth ftw ( for tw win )
I can find the same kind some what but it's a gel. Packing is the same.
Gel reusable cold packs won’t work. You need the instant one use cold packs.
@@TheCanadianChemist ok. Understandable....., I've found the now tho. Literally bought all them at 2 Walmart locations. LOL, legit Ness!!!
Seeing you actually keel up with replies. Can you perhaps PM me just a quick check list of some materials and the round about getting this done.
Much Appreciated!!
Sure! Just send me an email and we can chat there if that’s easier. My email is thecanadianchemist@gmail.com.
@@TheCanadianChemistcan it be used for bluing steel
Is it possible to do this in a 3-neck flask and bubble the gas trough water and make ammonia solution?
Yeah, your idea sounds like the fancy way but if you've got any method to capture the gas and pass it through a bubbler, it should make aqueous ammonia, and also cut down on the breathing hazards. If you don't want ammonia for anything you could still neutralize it through a chemical bath.
I think you can buy it as Chile saltepeter in a normal store but it's expensive
whats the purity of it?
One can only guess in this case but some re-crystallization and filtering cycles can improve the purity ... yet decrease the yield.
I did it! But might be overheated
Its color brown ?! Is it still good to use ?
how long is the shelf life of this product?
Is this used for making crack?
thank you

You still have calcium nitrate as well , not that that matters
Wouldn't that react with Sodium Hydroxide as well ... making Calcium Hydroxide (almost insoluble in water) and Sodium Nitrate?
You can get potassium hydroxide from ash
A very small amount if any directly. Despite of many people's opinion the main compound in the ash made from hard wood isn't Potassium Hydroxide but Potassium Carbonate. Yes, you then can calcine the Potassium Carbonate to Potassium Oxide and then make Potassium Hydroxide by mixing the product with water, however this takes time and money. However, maybe Potassium Carbonate can be used directly to substitute Calcium and Ammonia in their Nitrates.
Can I use calcium nitrate fertilizer instead of calciumammonium nitrate?
Don't know about Calcium nitate fertilizer but here in the U.S. after the Oklahoma City bombing 1995 thr largest amount of ammonium nitrate the regular consumer could get hold of was 2lbs or about
9/10kg.
It should work.
Hi. What if you can not buy Ammonium Nitrate what can i use to replaces the Ammonium Nitrate?
What is the final product you're looking for? Sodium Nitrate? Any nitrate made from a less reactive element than Sodium should theoretically work.
Calcium nitrate, potassium nitrate(not the reaction shown in the video), magnesium nitrate etc
what happens to the Calcium?
In my opinion the Calcium Nitrate will react with Sodium Hydroxide to make Calcium Hydroxide and Sodium Nitrate. Calcium Hydroxide is very poorly soluble in water, therefore will get filtrated out ... and the small soluble part will just contaminate the final product.

I'm not sure why hes doing this.....

am i the only 12 year old that’s interested in
chemistry? lol i’m 13 now.
No..I'm convinced that's why chemistry isn't taught in primary schools 😅 - kids just love getting into explosives! I was the same..still am. You should learn as much as you can it is very good for you to do this just be careful and maybe get one of your parents or an older relative to help or supervise .. good luck ✊
Same bro. I was interested in chemistry when I was 12 years old. Now I am 14
