Small quibble: the acronym is pronounced nor-ad. Big quibble: The republic of china(taiwan) lost recognition by the us when the us recognized the peoples republic of china(china) in '79. Previously all of china was considered sovereign to taiwan. Its a BIG detail on whether china thinks they can get away with invading. Ths only thing protecting taiwan is the value of tsmc chip production. They've got no alliances only economic interests.
Thanks so much for pointing that out! Pinning so the mistake is noted for all viewers as I agree it's an important oversight in the video! Sorry for the mistake y'all, we're learning, we're growing, etc. To clarify: the US does not officially recognize Taiwan!

@@stephenmurray2851 more than one person has said that number is exaggerated.

The war in Ukraine has given us a glimpse into what modern war looks like. It's the first time 2 sovereign nations with (mostly) modern militaries have gone to all-out war since like the 50's. We've learned a few things: Tanks are pretty much useless if you can't control the skies, and tiny bomb-carrying drones which are really hard to detect have made it increasingly difficult to control the skies. Combine that with the threat of nuclear war keeping militaries from escalating things too much, and modern warfare seems to look closer to World War 1 than World War 2. The war in Ukraine, in many places, has devolved into trench warfare. Hell, China and India literally fight each other with clubs and bricks to keep things from escalating. You can find videos of it, it actually looks like a medieval battlefield.
Well, considering the iran iraq war in the 80s had trensh warefare even in the age of aviation, it makes sense european nations wouldnt be that much better
Ask the Germans in Normandy 80 years ago about tanks and controlling the skys ...
@@minestar2247 To be fair, even though it was in its infancy at the time, the age of aviation had started by WWI, as you had aerial dogfights and bombing runs throughout that war. In fact, that was the war of the Red Baron.
@@kat021171 exactly, trench warfare is inevitable
It’s still not all out war there. Ukraine has been handcuffed until recently having to promise not to strike into Russia and other agreements. When Russia invaded, the west super under reacted and is only now giving Russian assets abroad to Ukraine. The very fact that thousands of Russians will travel to Europe this summer without issue is appalling
Just a small note. Yes the main players in both world wars were european powers, but saying that the criteria for a world war is a european conflict just flat out ignores the fact that the world wars were fought all over the globe. Take ww2, for example. It was fought in Europe, Africa, and Asia. There were major actions in China and the Philippines. Australia, Canada, India and othe British commonwealth countries all had a hand in it. Obviously the US played a major role both through the lend lease program early on and direct actions post pearl harbor. A world war effects everyone in the world. It is not a "european war" and saying that it was or is is just way to eurocentric an understanding of what actually happened.
Thank you for coming to my ted talk.
Thank you for saving me the trouble of writing this up.
@@Jszar thanks for recognizing the effort.
In fact the Pacific theater was WAY bigger than the European one in WWII. By far!
That's what I was thinking. To say it was a "western-centric" understanding is to completely ignore the massive campaigns in Asia and Africa during the war.
She's just turned into reactionary "West all bad, all West fault for everything" shill. Sadly, what gives the rest of the left a bad rep.
World War 2 started in 1937... by an Asian Power, but sure it was purely European. Man, these youtube wannabe leftists, really just totalitarian, really show their lack of knowledge regularly.
I'm more worried about right wing extremism and its embrace of fascist authoritarianism than I am about WWIII.
I think it's semi-connected globally 😢
Both are connected. The people who would want a war are often those same far-right despots.
I guess. Perhaps the only thing worse than dying for your freedom is not having any to die for.
This also scares me. The embrace of authoritarianism. But now we have all three candidates DJT, Biden, RFK have all come out in support of genocide. This is maddening that we might see all of our freedoms evaporate overnight because bibi decided to not stop. Watching the biden not put his foot down on this obvious genocide is disheartening. Because now DJT could end up walking straight into the oval office with project 2025 at his back. And watch, just like xi and putin, they will make it so they can never be removed. Meanwhile poisoning our food, air, and water supply just enough to not outright kill ya. China is not off the hook though either, or did forget about the Uyghurs. China economy runs on an capitalistic system minus the social safety nets. The saving grace for them is that they have lifted themselves out of poverty for a large portion of people. If this is the best it gets for them, what happens when capitalism fails them as well. Remove citizens united, the idea that corporations are treated as persons (no double dipping for owners), raise the tax rates on corporations and the wealthy (not to confused with high income earners cause those two are not necessarily the same), remove the bribes of our congressmen and congresswomen.
Same here. Seriously, you would think more people would be just as concerned since that is an ever pressing threat

@alexlopez5800 the only speculation is what would happen if it kicked off in earnest. Saying that tensions are high rn isn't speculation and just because it isn't Bay of Pigs level yet we are still only a few minutes to midnight

If your title ends with a question mark it's likely the answer is "no".
I'm sure someone else has mentioned this, but NATO actually doesn't allow new members with ongoing territorial disputes. Ukraine was not viable since 2014. That rule is as old as the alliance, and it's not due to trying to gerrymander the boundary of what's a world war or where Europe begins/ends.
Yes it's why Putin messed around in Crimera, although I don't think it would have mattered anyway with the whole Ukrainian being like the 2nd most corrupt country behind Russia supposedly, however the measure that LoL
It’s the largest reason Ukraine haven’t been able to join nato despite wanting tour for the last decade.
I wonder if forgoing crimea and joining nato was possible and a better choice for Ukraine
@@sentryion3106 Maybe, though they still think that they can win it back. The war isn't over yet, so there's still time. But I don't think Crimea is too valuable for Ukraine anyway, since it's populated by Russians who largely didn't like the European direction the country took (hence no resistance of Russian invasion).
@@jamesmoran8294 actually thinking about it again the donbas region is also contested as of 2014 so they would need to forgo a lot of territory. Still if it could have prevented this war it was definitely worth it
@@sentryion3106 Honestly after the frontline settled it was clear what the people on the other side wanted. Call a truce, make a loyalist exchange, and let the country divorce. Of course the Russians wouldn't have been happy with that outcome, so we may have seen a totally unprepared Ukraine fight a stronger Russia.
As someone who has visited China, depending on where in China you are, the women walking safe is true but 1 hour away and toddlers are shitting on the sidewalk curb cause the public bathroom is a homeless apartment.
Not too far from some places in the US lol
Same here been to China many times through the years until covid hit everything slowed down but I remember being in cities where quite literally you can go down a beautiful Main Street with tall buildings and manicured trees then make a turn left or right to a side street and see tiny houses in poor neighborhoods that take you back in time. Yes I saw toddlers having their butts hanging over the trash cans or bridges over the river but never thought it was because of homeless people living in public bathrooms.
U have to compare China now to where China was 30 years ago, they're still growing
@@finallyforfeiteddo you genuinely think china even half way compares to the US?
@@HasnaaAlaa. Yes I have been going back and forth to China 6-10 times a year (before Covid) and you’re right it’s a growing young economy however think of it as the economy of the 40s and 50s in the US. There are factories but the workers have no rights and there is a deep divide in classes between poor to the upper class. There’s really no middle class. Now there’s a big shift in the Chinese economy since covid and the government is trying to hide it and manipulate their stocks which caused the upper class to lose so much money from the housing crisis and banks are holding their money. There were a LOT of deaths that are not properly documented as covid too. I just went back 2 months ago (didn’t stay long) from not being their for almost 5 years and I can see a big difference in the number of people walking the streets or in public places as well as I noticed the people I do see are 40 -50 years of age or younger. I only seen a hand full of older people in the 5 days I was there and that was a shocker compared to the last time I went when I seen lots of people of all ages walking the streets. They definitely were hit hard with covid.

I am also nervously searching for better places to take refuge should things get worse. I'm stuck in Florida, so I'm already behind the ball. 😅
My ultimate fear is that no matter where we go, fascism has an ugly way of spreading, infecting, and taking root. Like a cancer, it metastasizes.
All those fools up north are worried about Mexicans flooding into their states. They should be more concerned about Americans fleeing the southeast. I want to get the f out of here. Sick of the humidity and the mosquitoes..

No seriously, come to Brazil - Leftists are needed.
Just don't be overwhelmed with the 27 political parties...
Fight it where you live--that's the only choice for all of us. Fascism anywhere is a danger to everyone.
@HANKTHEDANKEST Completely agree. It's just difficult in Florida. This place is a shitshow. I'll keep fighting for as long as I can, but the worse the persecution gets and the more dangerous it becomes, it will no longer be safe or viable for myself and my family. I'll not put them in jeopardy. At that point, we'll have to have an exit plan. Live to fight another day, and such. 🖤
It’s not a guarantee, but there are blue states like New Mexico that are safe for now.
People really forget that Ukraine in 2014 was a very different thing when Putin invaded Crimea. They were neither prepared nor so unified, and Turkey was playing games, so we had limited unilateral plays we could possibly have made in the Black Sea by then. Not to mention that's another decade of Ukraine getting smarter while Russia dumbed down further and degraded its own military through all that corruption.
Also the fact that Putin has done so is exactly why everyone around has been scrambling to get into NATO.
(Which honestly also means he broke that 1992 treaty, and everyone knew he would eventually. Another purpose of NATO was to put a bit of muscle behind the UN idea of the West/Europe not actually *fighting each oher again.*
It's easy to be cynical about Western/particularly US style captialism/corporatism, deservedly, but a lot of the adversaries are one degree or another of kleptocratic neofeudalists all for the big money and environmental looting, too. The corporations and oligarchs have little to no loyalty to nations, much less to freedom and human rights and democracy.
Exactly. Late-stage capitalism sucks, but dictatorships are a fuck of a lot worse. End of.
One would have to live in one to truly make a definitive assessment of this; preferably without a " funny blue passport ", and over a long stretch of time without means of maintenance, I'd think.
I like “neo-feudalist” - great description of China
Ukraine most corrupt country in Europe after Russia. Ukraine ranked 130th among 180 countries in the Corruption Perceptions Index (CPI) 2017 released by Transparency International. Ukraine improved its last year’s result by one point and got 30 points out of 100 possible. Next to Ukraine stand Gambia, Iran, Myanmar and Sierra Leone. Ukraine was able to achieve a slight improvement due to the fact that in 2017 the Ukrainian anti-corruption authorities (Special Anti-corruption Prosecutor's Office and National Anti-corruption Bureau) forwarded to courts first corruption-related cases where the suspects were high-ranking officials. 🤨

By pointing out that the military industrial complex is good for the economy and that solving homelessness wouldn't be, I think you have the right understanding but wrong conclusion. If homelessness were solved, companies wouldn't be able to exploit their workers with the fear that they may become homeless. That's a very good thing... just not for the economy.

All I'm going to say is that "Young people wanted to 'Bring back the 1980s'..... so how does it feel being on the brink of WWIII? You enjoying it yet?"
Yes, I'm a Gen-Xer who lived through the 80s (I turned 13 in 1980), and yes, it WAS an amazing time to be alive. It was also a very dangerous time to be alive, and now we get to revisit it. Also, WWIII pretty much started a long time ago, it's just been a very slow burn getting to the "Oh, SHIT!" part.
Also, more people need to accept that it's not anti-Semitic to speak as Israel's government and their "Whoops! My bad!" policy of killing civilians, many of which are children. That doesn't mean we hate Jewish people.... it means we're criticizing the Israeli government. Hell, Netty-Yahoo over there is having his police forces knock the crap out of Orthodox Jews within their own borders, because they are speaking out against him. It also doesn't mean that we "support Hamas"... we're just against the wholesale murder of non-combatants, and the only thing they can say about those deaths is "Oops! My bad!" before doing it again, and again, and again.
As it stands with Ukraine, either fight them there, now, or we fight them all over Europe within the next 5 years or so.
I'm just waiting for the catalyst that's going to get NATO fully involved, because we know it's coming.
Russia, North Korea, Iran, and China... in that order, are the worst threats right now. While China may WANT Taiwan, I don't think they are actually dumb enough to start a war with their largest customer (on the global market) over it. If Apple, Amazon, and Walmart close down their sweatshops, the Chinese economy will collapse. There's a WHOLE lot of interconnected pieces in this whole mess.
I'm listing Russia at the top of the list, because I wouldn't put it past Putin to use a few tactical nuclear weapons in Ukraine at some point. If any NATO people are caught in that... you can kiss Russia goodbye, and even if only conventional weapons are used to do it, Russia may well all 15 of their functional ICBMs.
Here’s what’s antisemitic: conflating criticism of Israel with antisemitism in the first place - I’m never gonna forgive the Dems for that one. That said, I’ve seen way too much conversation fueled by both antisemitism and Islamophobia, which is awful…including applauding Hamas for their attack on Oct. 7. It’s a shame we can’t all just agree that hate is wrong and killing civilians is a war crime, but that is where some people seem to be at.
But as a fellow Gen Xer who has also watched all this play out over the years, I can say you really called it by pointing out the “interconnecting pieces”, which are so complicated and tangled that no one could sort it out in a mere comments section on UA-cam. From global oligarch buddy systems to Christian Dominionists to the military industrial complex, it seems everyone has a stake in Israel.
I guess I don't see those other countries as threats. It's basically the US still trying to push ppl around acting like the world can't see how their rules based order is a sham. The US seems to be the one escalating.
What do you mean by WW3 started a long time ago? How so?
How the hell said we want to bring back the 80’s? The fuck kind of young people are you talking about? I just don’t want to die overseas for a cause I don’t believe in, if my country gets invaded I’ll surely defend it but I’m not willing to lay my life down because our leaders hate each other.
The Best economy is a balance between Capitalism and Socialism, the same for government is Social Democracy. You take the good parts from socialism and capitalism and ignore the negative sides, having a more direct democracy on the local level and a federal government on top. Then checks and bounds are important to retain Democracy and have a humane vision for the people. More open borders and a globalist philosophy, regulate corporations and have a strict gun policy. Norway is an excellent example of this form of government and economy. A move to green technology and dealing with Climate Change is also critically important.
"Whether peace is to be reached only after unimaginable horrors precipitated by humanity’s stubborn clinging to old patterns of behaviour, or is to be embraced now by an act of consultative will, is the choice before all who inhabit the earth. " - The Promise of World Peace
Both capitalism and communism as philosophical systems are not the same as their historical implementations. Capitalism as developed in the works of Adam Smith is not the capitalism we have in America today (he actually thought governmental regulation to hold markets in check was good, for instance). The communism developed by Marx, "Workers of the world unite!", a thought system that has led to many good things like unions, workers rights, etc. isn't the same as that of Maoist and post-Maoist China. Both of these philosophical systems have been abused by those in power. Those people are the actual bad influences at play. It's hard to say what a purer form that was implemented purely for the best of all would look like for either of these, but it's certainly not what we have, and arguably, either could be good.
Great comment that too few people can hold in their minds. But I think we largely do know what regulated-liberal-capitalism looks like - In many ways it’s the UK and Germany and the Nordic countries. Strong capitalist economies, where capitalism is constrained by regulation and the rule of law, and there are strong societal safety nets and labour protections. Unfortunately also high tax. Or Singapore, which has extraordinary economics, but robust social “goods” (great education, social housing, pensions and healthcare) and very low income tax (15%). If the whole world could work like Singapore we would all be a lot happier.
@@Daniel-rp7nbWhile I live Singapore, it would be uncandid not to acknowledge that it is being run as a benevolent tyranny.
It continues to do well because of the impact Lee Kuan Yew had on the personality of the government. Much like the influence that George Washington had a succeeding US Presidents.
The US trade war with China has NOTHING to do with how "bad" China is, "communism", dictatorship or whatever. It's what the Us ALWAYS did and will ALWAYS do when an economy is predicted to surpass them. They did that with Japan in the US- Japan trade war in the 90's, when Reagan put 100% tariffs on Japanese gods and Us congressmen went to the White House's garden to smash an evil Toshiba stereo with sledgehammers. Japan was a democracy, capitalist and an ally. Only that Japan "accepted it's place in the new world order" and joined the Plaza Accord, effectively becoming and Us bitch, even letting the Us cause the Japanese 90's bubble to slow down its economy in the 90's. Nothing new under the sun. When the Us face serious competition it ALWAYS hide and cry. It did that before. It did that even with my country, BRAZIL, centuries ago, over a HAT.
BY THE WAY, China became so powerful exactly because China and Japan have a beef over the war crimes Japan committed in China. To attack Japan guess which American president normalized relations with China and started investing there when Den took power in China and created the Economic special Zones? The Us is ALWAYS creating a new enemy trying t defeat an old foe, just like with the TALIBAN.
Guess in which country the US is massively investing now to provoke China? The Us wouldn't be so stupid AGAIN to invest in a country in which they cause remorse, right? something like VIETNAM, for instance?... Oh! Wait! Vietnam is the maor destination of the so called "china+1" policy by the West. haha
political philosophies are abused just like religions
To be fair, as long as social/socioeconomic power exists as a concept, people are going to use it for personal gain to the detriment of literally everyone else, so, imo, the only system that has any chance of working for the best of all is one with no power/hierarchy, that is anarchism.
17:50 I think it should be said that Israel (and the US) holds all the cards in ending this "war." On top of it not being a war, Israel is committing a genocide against the Palestinian people, and it isn't biased or partisan to say that. Love you Leeja!
Yeah, I’m not sure how we just accepted calling this a war - you can only declare war on another nation state, and Israel doesnt recognise Palestine as an independent state - its a “police-action” or anti-terrorism campaign - which throws the loss of human life and infrastructure into a very different frame
Or, Hamas could just surrender and return the remaining hostages. In 18 years, Hamas has failed utterly to liberate the Palestinian People or even provide them with basic security. Hamas has enriched itself on international aid and used the Palestinian people as human shields, a recruiting pool, and as corpses to be avenged.
Netanyahu is a terrible person who has committed war crimes after failing utterly to protect his own people. But he seems fully willing to spend every Palestinian life to destroy Hamas. Does Hamas agree?
Came here to say this!
23:30 this is an error. The United States government legally does not recognize Taiwan as an independent country. The official policy of the US government is that there is only one China and Taiwan is part of China. We maintain no formal diplomatic relations. This is a huge error in your script!
While the US does not recognize Taiwan as an independent nation, the US does maintain informal diplomatic relations with Taiwan and the Taiwan Relations Act requires that the US sell Taiwan military equipment appropriate fornits self defense and that any reunification of Taiwan with the mainland only occur due to the voluntary choice of the Taiwanese people.

It did that even with my country, BRAZIL, centururies ago, over a HAT.
Honestly if the US would stop stirring things up, it would help. When we go into to save a situation, it gets worse and we always end up as the bad guy. No one views us as the good guys anymore except us.

We aren’t anything like as close as we were during the Cuban Missile Crisis or the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan, when communication between superpowers were worse and there were direct threats to territory or vital resources (Gulf oil production). These days Russia, the US and China have constant communication between militaries to avoid misunderstanding. There are ways sub-war conflicts can happen - economic and cyber attacks for example - but nuke use doesn’t achieve anything for the superpowers.

Not sure I agree with the World War phrase being uniquely tied to Europe only. WW2 of course saw fighting in Europe but also in the Asia-Pacific Theater and North Africa and involved many countries around the world contributing to the war effort on either side either through direct fighting or supply. There have been many wars fought in Europe in the past that still involved many countries and have not been referred to as "World Wars" in the history books. Just my two cents.

Absolutely fantastic video, concise and efficient. Thanks!
Just a note that's a minor quibble. The P5 is less about who industrialized first (in fact, China wasn't very industrialized for the first 20-30 years of the UN), but something much more obvious but lost to time; the P5 were the "Allies" of World War II (US, UK, France, USSR, and the Republic of China). That's changed some, most notably in the early 1970s when the US and UK agreed to transfer the seat on the P5 that had belonged to the Republic of China (at this point filled by the government in Taiwan) to the People's Republic as part of the "detente" with China that was forged by Henry Fucking Kissinger. The other notable change, the more obvious one, came in 1991 when the USSR dissolved and Russia had been given their seat at the P5 table. And one may ask why Russia and not one of the other republics? Well, prior to 1991 the Ukrainian SSR and the Byelorussian SSR (Belarus) had separate membership in the UN from the rest of the Soviet Union, and they were the two other likely candidates. Since the Russian SFSR was the largest and "most advanced" of the republics that were represented by the USSR's seat at the UN, it became the official successor-state. So, in the end, the P5 are the successor-states of the Five Allies of WWII, as recognized and agreed upon by the rest of the club, which the UN in turn rubber stamps.

The best way to describe the U.S. is the comment "What the hell is the United States doing?" in a gaming video I watched.
To which I (an American) replied, "I ask myself that same question every week."
The thing that frustrates me with the Left (and I’m a progressive socialist type): there’s a naive belief that whoever has the most power is ALWAYS the biggest villain and the worst threat. We don’t want to become China, because it has all the worst features of capitalism; billionaires, inequality, poverty and the worst features of modern communism, an authoritarian leader and a completely unaccountable government with total control over the public. Russia is straight up old style imperial Empire with a capital E. They didn’t just invade Ukraine, they are annexing it. Which means taking the land and destroying the Ukrainian identity. The Iraq war was horrible and I protested it, but the US didn’t stick a flag in Iraq and put it on a U.S. map. The US didn’t say “Iraqi isn’t a real nationality”. The United States are hypocrites and a kind of sneaky imperialism with tendrils everywhere. But we still have real elections for now and they do limit what our leaders can get away with. Right now I hope that is punishing them severely for overturning Roe and corrupting our courts. But we may also become more like these other authoritarian countries very soon. Let’s see how that goes I suppose.
I’ve been to Ukraine several times since it was in the USSR, and it’s absolutely heartbreaking to see how it built itself up, only for it to be destroyed. Shame on the world for outcasting it. I have no words to truly describe my disgust.

The US supports Taiwan because it is a part of the First Island Chain strategy of it's China containment strategy. Ceeding support of Taiwan would enable China to dominate Politically and Economically the entirety of South Asia ( Vietnam, Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia, Singapore, The Philippines and others) as well as long time Allies Japan and South Korea. The one big question I have for our military spending is like our medical costs. Are we getting what we paid for? Are the weapons and tech better, or are we just paying more for less?
Naval task forces and air strike groups are smaller than ever before because our ships and planes are that much more capable. That means fewer of our soldiers in harm's way to begin with, terrorist attacks in neutral ports notwithstanding. That means lower personnel costs overall.
I'm glad that, hopefully, that translates a soldiers safety, but does the amount of money spend reflect that or do other countries do that same thing but cheaper. The Pentagon has misplaced billions in military spending. Like they don't know where it went. That is a big concern.

Life under Xi Jinping is a bit hard to explain. Many of the downsides are not the fault of Xi, but the system. Many of the upsides of Xi, is mostly due to him. But there are always two sides of the coin. So let us start with the dowmsides.
Issues with public pension. That is huge right now, elderly living off scraps. Is that only China that have this problem? No. Korea got the exact same issue. High unemployment rates for young people. It is extremely extremely difficult to get a job as a young person in China right now. We have literal PhDs in physics, computer science and other STEM from the most prestigious universities in China, working as streets sweepers, and other jobs like that. Why is that? They can't find work within their respective fields so they do the second best thing, they work for the government. That is secured pension and benefits.
What are some upsides? Really high quality infrastructure. 5G, expanding the high speed railways, bridges to nowhere, railways to nowhere, cleaner greener energy. The air has gotten much cleaner under Xi. That is a plus. Local governmental officials are a lot more accountable. I am not saying it is great, but it is better.
Government censorship has increased, that is true, it is harder to hide money. It is harder to take obseen bribes. And more. Overall he has been a net negative. Not because of internal affairs, but because of international politics and the increases jingoism.
Really, then why are record numbers of Chinese flying to the Chinese embassy in Ecuador trekking through dangerous Central America areas and finally crossing the Mexican border to live in the U.S., if things are good. If you want to see this as 'manplaining', well that is up to you, but I believe Russia has more nukes than the US and as far as the 2 atom bombs dropped on Japan: It was estimated by the US during WW2 that as many as 1 million US casualties in defeating the Japanese home islands, especially after seeing how tenaciously the Japanese fought and their willingness to die, rather than surrender. Also, US conventional bombings killed thousands more Japanese civilians than the 2 nukes combined. Even after both atom bombs had been dropped, the Japanese army wanted to continue fighting and it was only the intervention of the Emperor Hirohito that forced the Japanese to surrender. Let me finish by saying that I am not advocating the use of nuclear weapons in any present or future conflict, but the use of the atomic bomb against Japan probably saved lives on both sides in the long run.

Sorry for being one of those mansplainers, but your history on the Ukraine conflict is extremely limited, as is your simplistic characterization of Putin. The US has wanted to expand NATO to Ukraine and Georgia for a long time, in fact the US wanted to officially invite Ukraine and Georgia in 2008, but were prevented from doing so by France and Germany who understood that it would mean war with Russia. Instead the US pushed through an "open-door" policy towards both countries. It should be noted that there was no opinion for NATO membership at this time in either Ukraine or Georgia. The US-backed coup in Ukraine is what sparked the invasion of Crimea. This is basically like if China would invite Canada and Mexico to a military alliance with them, and once the people of Canada elects someone who instead chooses to be allied with the US, China instigates a coup against the Canadian government. The Russian invasion cannot be justified, the loss of human life can never be justified, but it could have been prevented if the US wasn't so keen on expanding NATO to Russia's borders.
Also regarding Taiwan, a big reason for US involvement is that the US wants control of the South China Sea, because remember only the US had the right to control seas thousands of kilometers from their borders.
You don't have to apologize for being a "mansplainer". 😑

You messed up on the Iranian Revolution history. The revolution was not against secularism. In fact, most Iranians opposed theocracy. The ayatollah rallied Iranians around Islam b/c it represented, to Iranians, the antithesis to American imperialism. It was only after the Shah was deposed that the ayatollah & his goons violently consolidated power to create a theocracy. A lot like the US, the current Iranian regime’s base is comprised of less educated, more rural communities.
Your section on the middle east, specifically Saudi-Iranian rivalry misses a key element of religion, while they are both Muslim countries, there is a key difference in that one is Sunni, the other Shiite. This matters, as it adds another layer of complexity, comparable with the European wars of religion in the 16th-17th centuries.
Your commentary around Nato/Europe not letting Ukraine into Nato & the EU also skips the requirements around the potential member states not being involved in a conflict - which Ukraine unfortunately is. So as much as many member states would like it to be, it is blocked from doing so. This doesn't also factor the unilateral agreement from all member states, which is potentially difficult as some share wildly different values and agendas (Turkey).
The South China Sea is another key flashpoint - not just Taiwan - that the US and it's regional allies are closely involved in, another very touchy subject not to be glossed over.
Note on Ukraine not being allowed as part of Europe since it is a bit misleading:
EU=European Union and Europe are not 1:1. There are a set of criteria you have to fill to be an EU-member, such as having your finances in order, documented democracy etc.
Not being an EU member does not mean that you are not in Europe (look at Norway or Iceland, who is considered a part of Europe, just like we do Ukraine). In order to meet these criteria then many structural changes are needed in a country, and it is therefore expected to take a very long time. The EU is not known for bypassing rules. 😅
So if a country is not in the EU, they will have to do a lot of work on their own to set up agreements themselves. (Norway are for example, a part of the Nordic union)
Besides that then EU have historically been a non-military union meaning that what each individual country does is their own thing (we see a change happening here) though many countries are indeed a part of nato, making the lines blurry. 😬
That is all thanks 😅
