When is the Park Service going to realize that the exterior dial of the Great Clock does not have an "Hour" hand? Yes, the dial is one-handed. That much is obvious. But that doesn't make the one hand an hour hand. Jefferson applied Revolutionary French concepts of scientific efficiency in timekeeping at a glance. The exterior dial bears a chapter ring with two concentric time scales, one with 144 divisions (marking 5 minute intervals), and one with 48 divisions (marking 15 minute intervals.) None of the batons are longer, or thicker or differently shaped to mark any other intervals (like the divisions of time into intervals of 12 and 60 that you'd find on a conventional clock that does have an hour hand). So, the hand and chapter ring on the exterior dial of Monticello's Great Clock ONLY tell minutes. The hour has to be deduced from the position of the hand. If the tip falls on large and one small division beyond the general location of the II, then the time is 2:20 (2 o'clock plus 15 minutes plus 5 minutes). It's the same way cutting-edge French souscription watches displayed the time. There's no "hour" hand anywhere on that exterior dial. It's a single-handed dial in the French revolutionary tradition.

Mr. Jefferson was a learned man of reason and enlightenment who respected other learned men who were his counterparts. He was a scientist and respected other scientists of his time and learned from them. If physicians and scientist of his day had recommended the wearing of a mask to protect oneself and others from disease, he certainly WOULD have obliged this common-sense action and worn a mask, rather than decline to do so out of selfishness and stupidity. As the Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. said: "Nothing in the world is as dangerous as sincere ignorance and conscientious stupidity." Mr. Jefferson was guilty of neither, unlike those who refuse to wear a mask at this time.
Mr. Khan had the courage to speak truth to power and he and his wife had every right to do so, their only son having sacrificed his life to defend the United States. Truth was unknown to the now-former fascist, er despot, er President. He was a draft dodger ("bone spurs"? Really? No, the reality was that he had no spine!)
