The problem is economics provides a distorted view of reality. Economists ‘externalize’ nature, and present ‘the economy’ in mechanistic terms, as a complex machine. This has psychologically broken the real linkages of people with reality. So instead of associating food with healthy growing conditions, and shelter with a stable climate, people associate health and safety with income and financial markets. In our minds, we have replaced the role of nature with the economy. This was intentional. Climate change is the symptom, or effect, of pollution. The cause is economic production/consumption. Carbon emissions are closely correlated to both per capita, and global GDP.

We’d all be doing better mentally and physically if most of us weren’t still expected to spend our lives enriching the ghouls who are driving this crisis in the first place and were instead allowed to work to solve the problems we face.
Even as a teacher, I’m not doing anything to improve our future. Prepping a bunch of chronically depressed and anxious teens to pass a test while haranguing them over their phone addictions doesn’t inspire hope. We’re just preparing these kids for a life that won’t exist in a couple decades.
How much longer are we going to allow this farce to continue? Cognitive dissonance is the crutch on which we all stand.

Learning is change, and learning is exploring and discovering, like crawling to walking, learning to speak, so as long as the motivation for change and learning come from within, humans are willing to change. If changing is not perceived as beneficial, even considered an inconvenience, and is considered involuntary and externally forced, then even the idea of change will definitely be resisted or rejected.

Ecologists over 100 years ago also described the oceans as "the tragedy of commons". Math, science and physics can explain everything in our natural world, for every degree warmer, the atmosphere holds 7% more moisture. Atmospheric rivers will become more common as well as drought.

    • @Debbie-henri
      @Debbie-henri 5 місяців тому +3

I was explaining atmospheric rivers to my husband just a few hours ago.
He believes that climate change is a threat, but because we live in what is a fairly stable area - currently - I don't think he accepts in his mind that climate collapse is going to happen in his lifetime.
In fact, he just did what he always does when I raise a climate related news issue, go quiet, mumble, flick through his smartphone until I stop.
However, I have convinced him to change his vote in the forthcoming elections. He'll be Green this time. We know Green won't win, again. It never does. In the election paraphernalia dropping through our letterbox - only the Greens mention climate at all
The rest just crank out the usual rubbish that they never solve anyway - economy, equality, blah blah blah.
It's the fact that climate collapse is imminent that people are blocking from their minds.
They use a variety of defences to stop from listening - denial, fear, or drowning out the warnings by fully occupying their thoughts with other things, be it entertainment, activity, or other far less pressing issues that they feel they can realistically help change (For instance: AI dominance, inequality... The reality is, neither of these issues are going to mean a bean if there's no habitable planet for them to be an issue on, so why bother even considering, let alone campaigning, about them)?
4-5 years of inaction, and I reckon we will see large uninhabitable zones spreading quicker than the rate of human-induced desertification ever did (both in sea and on land).
But no one is going anywhere near fast enough to address it. And you can see why not if you pay attention to the flood of ever more attractive advertising gimmicks being thrown at us:
Fossil fuel companies pretending to be caring friends of the environment.
Cars being produced like fast fashion products.
      Fast fashion itself.
Make up ads. The amount of make up containers being found in the ocean, inside animals is just criminal. And yet these beauty product companies seek more and more ways to convince women to create even more plastic waste, not less.
And as for travel. I'm inundated daily with unwanted adverts encouraging me to fly or cruise around the world in the top 2 worst forms of transport for pollution, just so I can add myself to the massive hordes of tourists that are causing local degradation of environments, ancient sites, local peace and harmony, and housing opportunities for native peoples.

They concluded a convo about delay tactics (in the narrow context of fossil fuel use) by saying we need to shift to renewables. A massive shift to renewables would not only ALSO destroy the planet, it isn't physically possible in the small amount of time we have left. One important issue is missing.
The reason people are losing interest in the issue of global warming is because the media announces plans for new wind power plants and large-scale solar power plants.
(They only want subsidies, and from an electrical engineer's point of view, an increase in unstable power sources will not solve anything.)
And people who see the reports tend to take the easy way out and assume that someone will solve global warming, which is disconnected from reality.
Now is the time to reduce electrical energy and CO2 emissions as much as possible and decide what is really effective.
Electrical energy consumption can be reduced by about half if taken seriously.
    (I am already practicing)

Companies that produce plastic products sometimes use a cheaper non-recyclable plastic and mass produce it. The resin identication code is used to identify which plastics can be recycled. The worse thing is that the resin identification code is similar to the symbol for recycling. So people tend to mistake it for something that can be recycled. Not to mention that recycling polymers is incredibly difficult and costly. Companies are better off making their own plastic rather than using recycled ones simply because it is cheaper. A lot of the products we use, inc clothing, uses some sort of oil in it to produce it. The making of electronics also produces pollution. Making massive windmills and solar panel arrays will produce pollution. They won't produce pollution when generating power, but making them will still produce some sort of pollution. People are also unwilling to sacrifice their lifestyle to help with climate change, which is by far the largest factor. Everything we do, including recycling will make pollution.

Talk about denial. I just listened to a very well done episode on the problems we humans have when it comes to recognizing the global climate change. This episode was almost 30 minutes long. At the end we are asked to be more alert as to how we are being manipulated. Nowhere did anyone connect the rather obvious dots that suggest an important hindrance to tackling this problem is that only global capital benefits from our continued rush to annihilate conditions for life on our planet. Could only benefit in the short term, of course, because should we all die there is no more profit to be made. As soon as we evolve nation states willing to reign in the excesses of capitalism for the common long-term good, then we would have solved this and many other problems. Even the evil doers in this scenario know that this is true - the source of our problem is our ideological commitment to rapacious capitalism. They know this to be true because some suggest that climate activism is part of a plan to attack capitalism. If only that were more true.

I can say this channel is good and presents the way public can easily understand. No matter we could win to keep below 1.5 C or not, we have to keep fighting. Also have our mind relax, and take actions and tell ourselves we do our parts. I am just afraid the fear is too much for most people, and so we need to mentally prepare to keep us work on. It is no doubt as people take actions, some industries would be changed or even some businesses closed and unemployment. But people can find new jobs and in fact, market has been changed since the beginning. We only need to accept whatever not suitable, it would gone. i do think govt can do something about this.

The real climate story is this: In 1992 the UNFCCC agreement stipulated safe concentrations. In 1994 it was ratified and came into effect. A year later the IPCC, in its second assessment report (section 1.7), ignored this stipulation and switched the goal to reduced emissions. This permitted GHG concentrations to rise to today's catastrophic levels. Neither Mann nor Oreskes mentioned this critical point because the main task of climate scientists today is to conceal this betrayal of humankind and nature.

This has nothing to do with natural cycles, and our emissions are currently warming the planet ~20 times warming than natural cycles warm it when coming out of an ice age. @@307alexk Thanks for your reply. "How is the climate going to cause a collapse?"
Not-so-fun facts: Humans have already raised global CO2 levels by ~50%, CO2 levels are now the highest they have been in ~14 million years, and the main “kill mechanism” for most major and minor mass extinctions of life on Earth was significant changes in global CO2 levels. So, what are we doing about it? We are currently raising global CO2 levels ~9-10 times faster than they increased before the worst mass extinction event in earth’s history. Every time you burn just one gallon of gas in your car or truck, you add 20 more pounds of CO2 to the atmosphere where most of it will remain for centuries.
"What does "chemical and plastic pollution, fertility, the capitalist economy, and societies" have to do with Climate change? Those are other unrelated problems." Those are NOT related to climate, but I'm trying to introduce the big-picture thing that experts are correctly scared about which is that this industrialized capitalist civilization is itself unsustainable. Modern civilization is a self-terminating system because it destroys all the sustaining conditions that made the rise of civilization possible in the first place, including a stable climate, abundant natural resources, a chemically-unpolluted world, lush ecosystems, staggering biodiversity, and social cohesion.
I'm simply answering your question about what we should be scared about, and the young people who are terrified about the future have an accurate grasp on things and those who assume modern civilization will just continue on like this are the ones in for a rude surprise.

Then innovation in fertilizer and food production technology helped fuel the population. Now everything from food production till it reaches us is dependent on Fossil fuel. How can we even untangle ourselves from fossil fuel, without destroying food production and supply? With extreme temperatures, we need more fossil fuels to protect crops. So, i just started ignoring everything .

sustainable policrop agriculture like agroforestry or sintropical agriculture or permaculture can potentially produce more food per m² than monoculture even without any fossil fuels and also help increase biodiversity.
And even if we leave things as they are. Just the widespread usage of terra preta could turn farmland into huge carbon sinks.
Also another very importand factor... 80% of farmland is used to produce meat and dairy products or farmed fish while providing only around 17% of calories and 38% of proteins in our food worldwide.
So if we switched to another diet we could solve quiet a few issues.
And maybe we should stop throwing away allmost 40% of the food that is produced like the US currently does.
There are quite a few solutions out there tbh.

Sorry, this is all complete nonsense. This is not about the psychology of ordinary people. It is very simple. At the 1992 Rio Earth Summit, world leaders promised to address this crisis. 32 years ago, no one was saying they weren't sure about climate change. I know, I was a science student, studying climate science, in 1992. It was absolutely certain.
Absolutely, the only question, is why have our leaders not taken the action they promised to take 32 years ago? We have a hierarchical system, where only one person can take these big decisions. And they have taken big decisions. Started a war on terrorism, invaded Iraq and far more. These leaders, can take pretty big actions if they want. But strangely, whilst agreeing to take major climate action over 30 years ago, they have taken none. This is the only psychology at work here.
People have no idea what action governments are planning, and how they are taking it, because they keep it all secret. I can show you academic studies of public opinion about climate change, which prove that most people were concerned about climate change, and wanted action 35 years ago. Their leaders promised major climate action, and they voted for the politicians that promised it.
Once again, absolutely the only question, is why our leaders never took the action they promised. The treaty that set up the UNFCCC, which set up the COP talks was signed at the 1992 Rio Earth Summit. Has anyone here actually read the UNFCCC?

By 2100, likely GMSL rise with respect to 1995-2014 of 0.51 (0.40-0.69) m, 0.62 (0.50-0.81) m and 0.70 (0.58-0.91) m for, respectively, GWLs of 2.0°C, 3.0°C, and 4.0°C (medium confidence). Deep uncertainty in projections for GWLs >3°C because of ice-sheet behaviour. For example, incorporation of low confidence "

@Richard482 Sea level appears to be rising at a small 3mm per year. Atolls in the Pacific nations of the Marshall Islands and Kiribati, as well as the Maldives archipelago in the Indian Ocean, have risen up to 8 percent in size (Ford and Kench, 2020). 89% of the globe’s islands and 100% of large islands have stable or growing coasts (Duvat, 2019). No island larger than 10ha decreased in size.
As regards NOAA tide gauge data, let's look at some examples from around the world. N.B. All sites show a linear Relative Sea Level Trend: Kanmen, China 2.40mm/yr; Sydney, Australia 0.75mm/yr; Ferandina Beach, Florida 2.20mm/yr; Los Angeles, California 1.04mm/yr; Mera, Japan 3.8mm; Cascais, Portugal 1.32mm/yr; Newlyn, UK 1.94mm/yr.
Jevrejeva, et al (2014) estimated 2 mm/year (± 0.3), and Church and White (2006) estimated 1.7mm/year (± 0.3). So that's a total rise of between 126 and 151mm (less than 6 inches) from 2024 to the end of the century.
Or try PSMSL data: Kwajalein (Marshall Islands) 1.95mm/yr; Maldives (Indian Ocean) 3.21mm/yr; Lautoka (Fiji Islands, Pacific Ocean) 3.50mm/yr; Port Elisabeth (South Africa) 2.34mm/yr.
Remember, all linear over many decades, or more than a century.
Anyway, if you prefer satellite data NOAA's trend was +3.0mm/year Global Mean Sea Level (1993-2022), again linear last time I looked for each set of satellite data (but hey, it may have accelerated in the last month).
NASA satellite data (1993-present) for Global Mean Sea Level shows a rise of 3.3mm per year. That's the same as two stacked penny coins.
There is no relationship to the exponential increase in CO2 in the atmosphere. It's going to be decades before even your big toe is submerged.

@@OldScientist "The global mean sea level (GMSL) rise under RCP2.6 is projected to be 0.39 m (0.26-0.53 m, likely range) for the period 2081-2100, and 0.43 m (0.29-0.59 m, likely range) in 2100 with respect to 1986-2005. For RCP8.5, the corresponding GMSL rise is 0.71 m (0.51-0.92 m, likely range) for 2081-2100 and 0.84 m (0.61-1.10 m, likely range) in 2100. Mean sea level rise projections are higher by 0.1 m compared to AR5 under RCP8.5 in 2100, and the likely range extends beyond 1 m in 2100 due to a larger projected ice loss from the Antarctic Ice Sheet (medium confidence). The uncertainty at the end of the century is mainly determined by the ice sheets, especially in Antarctica. {4.2.3, Figures SPM.1, SPM"

@Richard482 The problem with all these models and projections is that Antarctica is not playing the game.
The whole of East and West Antarctica is cooling, and has been for 40 years. East Antarctica has cooled by an impressive 0.7°C per decade. Resulting in an overall substantial and statistically significant decline of 2.8°C since 1980. So much for "Global" warming. I am referring to a paper by Zhu et al (2021) that looked at the reanalysed ERA5 satellite dataset. Check out table 4. Furthermore, the Antarctic Peninsula ice has since been shown to be on the increase “The eastern Antarctic Peninsula Ice Sheet has grown in area over the last 20 years, due to changing wind and sea ice patterns.” (University of Cambridge, May, 2022.)
In reality, "there have been statistically significant positive trends in total Antarctic sea ice extent since 1979." (Fogt et al, 2022. Published in Nature) "since 1979 is the only time all four seasons demonstrate significant increases in total Antarctic sea ice in the context of the twentieth century".
A study of Antarctic ice shelves from 1980 to 2021 (Banwell et al, 2023) showed meltwater volume dropped with "decreasing trend in both annual melt days and meltwater production volume over the 41 years.”
"Overall, the Antarctic ice shelf area has grown by 5305 km² since 2009, with 18 ice shelves retreating and 16 larger shelves growing in area. Our observations show that Antarctic ice shelves gained 661 Gt of ice mass over the past decade." (Andreasen et al, 2023). It is from a paper entitled "Change in Antarctic Ice Shelf Area from 2009 to 2019". They use MODIS (Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer) satellite data to measure the change in ice shelf calving front position and area on 34 ice shelves in Antarctica from 2009 to 2019. Also, as the mass gain (661Gt) was given, you could calculate the volume of the ice gained using the formula: Volume = Mass ÷ Density (assume Density of glacier ice 0.9167 Gt/km³). This would give you (well not you obviously) an Ice Gain Volume ≈721km³. That's how much extra of the lovely white stuff there is around Antarctica. Imagine standing in the centre of this extra ice. It would stretch beyond the horizon in all directions and would be 45 storeys high.
The Greenland ice sheet is thought to contribute 0.7mm/yr to sea-level rise. That sounds small because it is pitifully small. Antarctica contributes 0.36mm to sea-level rise per year. (That's essentially nothing as well.) The remainder is due to the thermal expansion of the ocean, and is a signal of past warming rather than current.
