Ex-Labour MP Thangam Debbonaire: Party’s ‘lack of a strong narrative’ on Gaza ‘had consequences’

  • As the Green Party quadrupled its quota of MPs in last week's general election, Shadow Culture Secretary Thangam Debbonaire was one of the casualties.
She was turfed out from the Bristol constituency she'd held for nearly decade.
In her first interview since her defeat, she has spoken exclusively to Cathy Newman about how she thinks Keir Starmer's position on the Gaza conflict led to her losing.
And she comes clean on whether the new Prime Minister has reached out to her since last Thursday's vote.

On the contrary. Her interview was one of self-reflection. She admitted that she knew that she was going to loose her seat back in November down mainly to the Labour Party's ill judged shift on the £28bn renewable energy pledge. She abstained from the first vote on Gaza because it did not contain the return of Israeli hostages. She then voted for 2 motions that called for immediate ceasefire, return of hostages and recognition of the Palestinian State. The position adopted by the Labour Party long before the election was called. But yet the Green party ran a vile false campaign accusing her of genocide and of being complicit with the murder of innocent children. And falsely stating that she did not support an ceasefire -knowing full well that she did. So she failed the Gaza purity test waged by the Owen Jones and Stephen Flynn Taliban. She lost her seat. Independent candidates won 4 seats. The Labour Party won 412. The SNP with Stephen Flynn's Gaza virtue signalling lost the SNP 38 out of their 49 seats. The dishonest Greens got 4 seats in affluent parts of England. None in Scotland and None in Wales. Lets see what they actually do to advocate for the people of Gaza or people suffering elsewhere in the world like the black Africans in Sudan.

I dunno, I think the way Starmer supported the collective punishment of Gaza, has continued to support "Israel's" massacres against Palestinians, how he celebrated the mass killing of 300 Palestinians to save 4 "Israeli" hostages and then how he voted against a ceasefire made his narrative on Gaza very clear.

Its accurate to group the Greens, Reform the Tories and Owen Jones for good measure. They all used variants of the same message - Labour will win by a wide margin so you might as well vote for us.
      - The Greens put out leaflets that said Vote Green and get Labour. They told deliberate lies about the Labour Party policy and conducted a vile disgusting personal campaign against her.
      - The Tories said do not give the Labour Party a super majority. They told lies about Labour tax and spend plans
      - The Reform Party said that its a forgone conclusion that Labour would win. They accused Labour Party advocated for open borders
      - Owen Jones mirrored the Green Party message that it was safe to vote for Green, Independent Parties and pro Gaza Labour candidates because Labour were going to win by a large margin. A strategy that saw one of the the vilest Tory MPs Ian Duncan Smith returned to Chingford - thanks to Faiza Shaheen. Now Mr Jones is doing a victory lap and pretending that the strategy only needs tweeking and his band of independents numbering 4 could grow by the next Parliament to force the Labour Party into coalition government.
So he was correct to lump them all together (I added Mr Jones). They all used the same tactic. Suppress the Labour vote on the back of an expected landslide win, told lies about the Labour Party policy and then pretended that voting for their respective candidates would allow them to be the voice of opposition that held the Labour government to account.
One might agree with your view that she was not a particularly good MP, she got it spot on with her assessment of where it went wrong for her in Bristol central. Flood the zone with half truths or deliberate lies about your opponents policies. But that is politics. The end result is that she lost her seat. Farage and his crew got 5 seats, Greens 4 and Independents 4. Congratulations to them. They played the system. Now compare that with the Labour Party's 412 seats and 170 seat majority. The Greens are not in power , they were not going to win the election, so they can say what they want! The people who got rid of the Tories were all the people who voted tactically to unseat a Tory m.p. not unseat a labour m.p.! The hard left helped some Tories to keep their seats by splitting the left vote, they also defeated some labour m.p.s on single issues like Gaza and will probably do nothing for their local communities. The Tories have gone, no thanks to the hard left who didn't help to get rid of the worst Tory government ever! The people who got rid of the Tories were all the people who went out and voted Labour and lib dems to get rid of Tories! Now Owen is saying how he feels optimistic and happier.....yes, now that the Tories have gone, no thanks to him!!

Are you having a laugh? Owen Jones might very well be trained as a journalist but he is also an anti Labour activist declared supporter of the Green party with a single mission to exact revenge on the Labour Party leadership for forcing he and the likes of Corbyn from the Labour Party. So do not pretend that she avoided a journalists. Be honest!
Furthermore if you watched the video, she clearly stated that she actually told voters (on the doorstep) that she did vote for a ceasefire twice (albeit not the first time around) but that the voters did not believe it. That's partly due to Labour Party poor messaging and partly Green Party false propaganda (their leaflets lied and put out gross images to shock voters) which they repeated nationally to gain 4 seats in affluent areas such as Bristol Central. Where people are more receptive the climate change agenda. They have no seats in Wales. No seats in Scotland and no seats in any deprive area of England. So its simply for the birds to suggest that they represent anyone living in poverty.

@LondGWils I agree with you! Also Owen Jones was not forced out of the Labour party, he choose to leave because of his disagreements with Labour. He then started a one man war against Labour telling people not to vote labour to vote Green and independent. Owen Jones wanted to unseat T.D. so why should she talk to him? The Tories have gone thanks to all the people who voted Labour and lib dems in order to unseat a Tory! No Thanks to Owen or the hard left who helped to split the left vote helping some Tories keep their seats and unseating some Labour m.p.s! That's all they achieved! The independent candidates who stood on Gaza, I wonder what they will do for their local communities? What will they do to help reduce poverty in their area? Support for Gaza won't help those people! Plus, the IDF and Israel and Hamas or the USA, they couldn't care less what some m.p. in the UK says about Gaza! Even the UK has virtually no power to stop the war in Gaza. If you think the UK government has the power to stop the war in Gaza you're delusional! All we can do is voice concerns and send Aid to help in Palestine, which we're already doing!

You do remember the hullabaloo over Dianne Abbott (which they backed away from once they reaped the backlash)? Have you conveniently forgotten those episodes? It was Labour’s self inflicted actions and petty factionalism that split the vote in the Chingford seat. They removed a perfectly good and well liked local candidate to parachute one of their own into the seat. Look at how that turned out. You might not like Owen Jones and what he’s done since leaving the Labour Party but his position at least has been consistent on every point he raised as to why he left. Starmer lied his way to the leadership and will govern I imagine in that vein. The voter turnout was depressingly low and his huge majority will soon evaporate if things don’t improve for the people of this country, particularly if he continues to serve the interests of the establishment elites. Time will vindicate who is right or wrong on these things but my hopes - judging by what I’ve seen these last few years - are not high.

The death and destruction in Gaza and in Israel over the last month have been devastating. I absolutely share your desire for the fighting to stop.
The only way to achieve the conditions for a full ceasefire - and ultimately, a lasting peace - will be through painstaking diplomacy, based on a deep understanding of history. While I respect the widespread calls for a ceasefire, I believe that as a prospective party of Government Labour has a responsibility to take a position of diplomacy-pushing hard to deliver concrete steps towards ending the violence, while doing all we can to alleviate the suffering now and remaining crystal clear in our commitment to upholding international law.
That is why I voted for Labour’s amendment to the Kings Speech on 15 November. You can see the full text of the amendment and more of my own thoughts on this heart-breaking situation here.
