      Norwegians living in established smaller commuities, at least the middel aged ones, always take care of their lawns, we like to keep our garden fine and trimmed, not over growing, at least compared to our neighbours.. This is the reason behind that.. i believe. Like the tv show, Side om Side ( side by side ) with Jon Almaas..

    The Norwegian phrases are actually in everyday use. It is considered a little rude by some Norwegians, but the average person is not bothered at all. Here is a brief explanation:
    * Hæ? - The Æ is pronounced like the A in mad. If spoken calmly, or in a neutral tone it basically means "what did you say?", indicating that you didn't hear what they said. If it is spoken in a louder voice, and then often pronounced with a slightly shorter sound, it would be more akin to exclaiming "WHAT?". In other words a more aggressive response like "I dare you to say that again", or "what are you going to do about it?". It's all a matter of tone, and context.
    * Oi! - It is usually pronounced with a surprised, or apologetic tone, and it basically means "Oops!". In the latter case it would express something like "Oh! Sorry, I didn't mean to do that!". If the I sound is dragged out it would used in the same way as "Oh shit!", like if you just watched someone fall on their face.
    * Nei, men! - The E in "nei" is also pronounced as the A in mad, while "men" is pronounced just like "men" in English. The literal translation is "No, but!", although it expresses surprise, and joy that you have bumped into someone that you care about. The two words can also be pulled together, and pronounced like "næmmen" ("Æ" like "A" in mad). If spoken in a softer voice, it can express concern, as if you came across a child who got separated from their parents. It can also mean something like "awww", like if you speak to a baby, or a cute animal (it this case is can also be pronounced like "nommin"). If spoken in a stern voice it can express annoyance, frustration, or anger. In the latter case it can often have an extra long pause between the words, and it means something like "what the hell". Tone, and context is important.
    * Ellers? - Translates to both "what else", "and otherwise?", and "or else". The former would mean "what else is happening in your life?", while the latter (without the question mark) would be like a threat. Punctuation, and context is important.
    * Du? - The "U" is pronounced like the "O" in "Who", and the word translates to "You?". It's akin to "Hey, you?", and it is used to request someones attention. If the U is dragged out, and the sound is dropping off at the end, it can express concern. If the dragged out U goes up at the end, it is a good indication that they are going to ask for something that they know is a bit much.
    With short words like this the tone, and context is generally important as it can convey a lot of feeling, and intent.

      The "du?" is like the word "dew", but without the "w" sound, unless you`re Danish lol, it`s not doo, as in doodoo, which is how "who" sounds (:
      Who do doodoo and voodoo does not a U sound make ;)

      @Luredreier 9 місяців тому +1

      I agree with most of this excerpt your pronunciation guide for "Du".
      And it makes me wonder how the heck you choose to pronounce "Who"...

    • @mjrdainbramage
      @mjrdainbramage 9 місяців тому +1

      @@Luredreier I posted a response the other day, but it looks like UA-cam either deleted it, or sorted it in some weird way.
      Regardless; the point I made was that according to phonetic spelling for American English the U sound in WHO, and the suggested DEW, is exactly the same. Phonetic spelling for the word DU indicates that it has the same, or very close to the same U sound. Keep in mind that I'm not saying its perfect; it's an approximation using sounds that Tyler knows. I'm open to better suggestions, but as i pointed out in my possibly deleted response; it is difficult to find the exact same sound in languages that doesn't even pronounce individual letters the same (yes F, M, N, and S are fairly similar in both languages). I also mentioned that the British English pronunciation of DEW is practically identical to the Norwegian pronunciation of DU, but Tyler doesn't use British English so the point is lost.
      With regard to our individual pronunciations of DU, and WHO it is very hard to say why we hear a difference here, or not. It could be because of our dialects, which letters we stress/don't stress, or a bunch of other possible explanations. In the end it doesn't really matter as it is just an "on the spot" approximation of a sound, thought up by an amateur. If you, or anyone else, comes up with a better example I'm willing to edit my initial comment, mark it as edited, and credit that person for the edit.

    • @mjrdainbramage
      @mjrdainbramage 9 місяців тому +2

      @@afrog2666 I'm honestly just curious; how do you take away the W sound in dew? In that comparison the combination of E, and W is the thing that makes the U sound that is also found in DU (at least I hope we agree that there is a U sound in DU). You have the same thing with the word EWE (female sheep) which is pronounced JU. I'm not trying to be rude, I just want to make sure that we have a somewhat similar understanding of how that word is pronounced, and why.
      I also looked up the words "dew", and "who" in several different dictionaries, and according to them the last sound in both words are exactly the same. The online version of Oxford Dictionary even have audio examples, but I won't link them here as that was possibly why my previous response has gone missing. Regardless of whether there is, or isn't a U sound at the end, it means that they are both equally good, or equally bad examples.

    I come from a town called Kirkenes and we live approximately 15 minutes away from the Russian border. We also have a soft spot for the Russian because they took the Germans out of Kirkenes year before the rest of Norway in WW2. So we are very thankful for the Russian people. we noticed the war between Russia and Ukraine very much. We used to drive over to Russia to get cheap alcohol and cheap petrol And also we are a town that have a lot of connections with Russia we are very sad that this has happened. and also a lot of the people who live in Kirkenes is Russian or half Russian.

      I had a brain bleed last December. Had to stay in hospital for weeks. What I went through in total:
      Two ambulance rides (road vehicle)
      One emergency “air ambulance” as in helicopter ride with onboard doctor, to major university hospital 40 min helicopter ride away.
      In total five CT-scans. Two with contrast, three without
      Three hours stay in ICU in local hospital
      48 hrs stay in neuro-ICU in university hospital
      All medication: Emergency one to stop the bleeding, and all the painkillers incl NSAIDS, Paracetamols, Opioids and so on for three weeks
      All-inclusive (like food and shelter) for those three weeks.
      Our total expense? $10 in parking my family parked……That’s it

It cost her nothing. She got transported in an ambumance to the hospital and in taxi to the rehabilitation and then home.
      The only cost was what me and my partner and other family members had to pay in parcking when visiting her.

    1million NOK is roughly equivalent to 100k USD. So since a lot of houses and upscale apartments tend to be 2-4million NOK, you could be a millionaire and still not afford a nice home. Case in point, the old farmhouse I live in now went for about 1.5million NOK when we got it. And its by no means a luxury house. Apart from its prime location on the other side of the road on the outskirts of the neighborhood, affording it a lovely bit of privacy.

    Oh my! Laughing so hard right now….my grandmom was from the Faroe Islands, so when we were visiting over there, we kept our wool-sweathers on at 14 degrees Celsius, but got invited to go swimming 😅. Also Norway, Stavanger, where I live, we don’t get as much snow as the rest of the country, that’s because the Gulf Stream is passing right outside our coastline. This means that we get snow for a few days if below -0 Celsius , weather changes often fast, so it melts, then freezes and we’re left with ice covered in a thin layer of snow. It’s very windy here,a lot of rainy days, so even if it’s + 4 - 7 Celsiu, it can feel like we’re below -0.
    Didn’t get the vacuuming the lawn joke either, must have been a Swedish joke 😂
    Normally when ppl bump into each other, polite ppl would say “unskyld” =sorry, but mostly oí or uff da, like if stumping a toe or something 😂😂 so annoying. Most guys don’t hold the doors for woman, woman often have to do the same home-maintenance as the guys, it’s ok, as long as we’re not pregnant…did you know that we often get to hear; “you’re just pregnant, not sick or injured” yeah! Love my country, but I try to raise my boys to be gentlemen and my girls to be considerate woman. It’s nice if the girls can build their houses together with they’re husbands, but I would love for the boys to be boys and the girls to be girls, let a guy carry and have his body building a human while building a house 😂 he would never again say “ oh, you’re just pregnant, stop wining” 😂😂😂

    While many use the word socialism even here in Norway, it is not socialism at all, but social democracy. Which is a nice form of capitalism. capitalism, though, is still the opposite of socialism. Which means Americans should not call it democratic socialism. It creates confucion. As for the prisson I do understand the need for "revenge" but prissoners serving time in Norway (whis is max 21 years with the possibility to promong if concidered still dangerous) seldome comit new crime. And I feel if the final result is less crime, isn't that better than feelings of revenge fulfilled? :)

    06:23 "Ellers" is usually second after something else, a typical conversation would go:
    You: So, what's up?
    Them: Nothing much, how about you?
    You: Same same, otherwise? (Ellers being Otherwise)
    It serves as a welcome for them to start talking about whatever, pretty much, just to keep the conversation going.
    They can talk about whatever else has happened in their life since last talking with you, talk about the weather, some random weird person they met the other day, or anything else, really.
    It's also a little difficult to properly guess, at times, what they mean by "Ellers?" as it can mean to talk about anything and everything, or it might be referring to something specific, and it's up to Them to figure out what you meant by "Ellers?"

    When we say "oi", it`s like saying "oops"
    Also, -14C is 6,8F, not 39, 39F is almost 4F which is like, yeah, I`ll probably be wearing long sleeves, maybe even a jacket!
    (it was 3C (37,4F) today and windy, so I had a hoodie on when I went for groceries)
    And as someone else mentioned below, I have NO idea what the lawnmower is about, like, that one confused me lol 😂

    15:45 Ireland, I think, uses Euros, a one Millionaire Irish person would be an 11 and Three Quarter Millionaire in Norway. I think that might be what this is pointing at, that you are significantly poorer as a Millionaire in Norway than as a Millionaire in a country that uses Euro as the currency.

    • @kalle5548

      I'd say it's more that you don't notice because if you don't recognize rich or famous people in Scandinavia, you'd never know. It's true that technically, a millionaire is much poorer, but the word isn't used to describe someone with a network of 1 million, you'd probably have to be above 50 million to be considered a millionaire, it's used as a synonym to rich
