Melons have been not just my favorite fruit, but my favorite food, since I was a toddler. ❤ If I had to live on just one type of food it would be melons, cantaloupes, watermelons, and honeydews in that order.
It's actually the same genus as tomato. It's a nightshade.
Yes! I found that out after I reviewed this. There's a subtitle saying so in the video somewhere.
Yes, I saw this after I made the comment. Thanks for reviewing this fruit again. I'm growing them but haven't tried one the fruits from my plant yet. Tried 3 different store bought ones -- very bland and boring.
You'll like them so much more!
that's "pepino de fruta" or fruit pepino . it's not related to cucumbers, it's a nightshade. it's very common here in Chile, it grows in fall-winter season and it's very cheap. its eaten when its ripe and tender, it should be very sweet and juicy. delicious!!
Thanks for making these videos. You show me fruits that i've never know existed and now want to try. There is a need for this on the internet and you are the only person doing it. I'm sorry that you don't get many views. On another note: Are you interested in changing your intro theme music wise at any time in the near future? if so reply and i will expand on the idea.
Great that you did this! Looks like I'm going to have to grow myself one. They started growing them in Turkey, and they were always sold unripe.
It makes such a difference!
You know a video is gonna be good when it starts with bags full of coca leaves.
Thank you for the Review..
My partner has one of these..
Your Insight Helped 8-).
I've tried mini ones grown in my garden and I found they tasted alot like Papaya.
genius topic! I had never thought about fruits from other countries, there are so many I have never seen! thanks!
I just planted one that has started to flower already. I have been conned a lot of money by China seeds sellers trying to get Pepino melon seeds. Finally able to buy a plant so rare.
You sir, needs more subscribers. I love your videos! I learn a lot from you ☺️☺️☺️☺️
Thank you! The subscribers are slowly growing day by day :) I'm waiting for the 25k mark
The skin and flesh go a deep yellow color when fully ripe and they taste a lot more like a sweet cantaloupe. They can be astringent when under ripe.
despite that you found some fruits before why not try them again in that new location since they might taste different kind of like how their are so many varieties of apples. Also it would be good to know the exact location on a map where you got them if others want to try it if they visit the place.
Thats why I reviewed this again. There are also a couple other fruits coming up that I reviewed before but I thought needed a quality update.
Hey have you tried stinkingtoe fruit? I'm from Puerto Rico and basically everyone hates it here (we call it Algarroba) but there are people (older people) who love it! The texture is powdery and it sticks to the roof of your mouth and it has a somewhat cheesy smell. People used to use its seeds to play but that tradition is almost dead. I've heard the tree is endangered because it's good for wood and nobody wants to eat its fruit. I haven't seen a tree in a while.
I have! I tried it in Colombia, video will be up in a couple months. I didn't hate it, but wouldn't eat it for pleasure
Weird Explorer haha I'm glad! can't wait to see it then.
Awesome video! I'm actually growing Tzimbalo melon pears, which are similar to pepinos, but they have a more concentrated flavor.
Interesting, I'll have to try those :)
I had one of these today it was soft but it still tasted like cucumber. I think if they are picked too early they soften but don't ripen
I have been growing these in my yard in San Francisco area for a few years. They're closely related to tree tomatoe. Mine taste like a juicy cantaloupe mixed with tomatoe when ripe. They look like a mini watermelon, green and black striations, yellow flesh.
Interesting!
Growing this also in SF. Waiting for my first harvest but there's some nice ones ripening! That's why I searched for this video.
Think one could be ripened in a paperbag, w/an apple for a couple of days? Yestetday was 1st time l've ever seen one, so l got one. It's more yellow than green. A tad bit soft, but not as much as one in vid.
Have a habit of buying exotic fruits & veggies, to attempt to grow my own. Am excited to see if l can locate & grow some of the lcecream Bean (?), mentioned in vid.
Not mid review. Top tier/10 thanks for the great review
The salty kind of feeling you get is umami, probably because there is some MSG in it. I don't know for sure, but there is in tomato and that's what makes them savory, so if they are related it's very likely that it it the cause :)
I grew one in Idaho this year. Only one on the plant unfortunately. I may bring it indoors since we are getting frost tommorow night.
I found one at my local grocery store today and am excited to try it. It looks like it’ll have to ripen more but I was curious. Thanks for the information
Did you figure out how to ripen it at home? Also, how long did it take?
I picked up one of these at my local Kroger in Ohio today. While I was in the produce section I checked your channel to see if you had reviewed this cute little melon and of course you had, lol. Now that I'm home and watching this vid I'm disappointed, my pepino is pretty hard. I'll give it a few days and see if it softens up a bit....I just discovered your channel a few weeks ago and I'm really enjoying your content.
You should go to Costa Rica and try Cas (a kind of guava which is tangy and makes the best juice), carao (a pod full of medium sized seeds covered in a hersheys syrup like pulp), guava (not what it means in english, actually its also a large pod which contains large seeds covered in a juicy cotton candy like pulp), guineo (a kind of banana), tacacos (podlike fruit which is added in soup), jocote (a fruit with almost no flesh but with a unique taste), coffee cherry, wild berries, pejibaye, a good soursop, many different types of guava (güisaro, guayaba, cas, guayaba rosada, etc), rose apple and many many more.
One of these days I'll get out that way, those sound great!
Debating whether to grow these at home in my garden. Based on your review, that is probably the only way to eat them.
god. looks amazing.
I too was disappointed by supermarket pepino melon. I've never seen them ripe... (actually I've never seen them again, ripe or unripe)
Thanks for the review, I had an amazing one at Mar del Plata (a bit far from its native range), just the same as the best melon.
You should look for an Ice Cream Banana. Those are supposed to taste like ice cream.
Just found your channel today and have really enjoyed watching your videos. Have you tried Blackcurrents? I didn't know until recently that the cultivation of them is actually banned in the USA (or in most states at least) - being from the UK it's really common. I guess that's "weird" enough to count right?
Thanks! Yes I reviewed them a while back, the ban has been lifted from what I can tell, but with that gap in history they are very rare here now.
Almost any fruit can go well in a regular savory salad. Most salads have sweet notes
we need to see jared prepare & eat a noni, noni and noni salad
My little brother was crazy for this fruit, specially for summer.
Are you making these videos while in South America or after you have already returned? A South American fruit I would love for you to review is called cocona. I'm growing them in California but mine haven't fruited yet.
I've been back for a while now. Cocona was on my "must find" list but sadly... I didn't find one. Might not have been in season. Hope yours grows well for you. I'm heading to CA in a couple weeks btw, any tips on places to fruit hunt?
What part of California?
Mostly LA but I might take a day trip to San Diego
I am in Northern California, but I do recommend Exotica nursery -- they often will have samples out for trying. It's in Vista, just north of San Diego.
Great suggestions! Thanks
Somebody told me that 'pepino' is actually the Spanish word for cucumber, but I'm pretty sure that they are not actually related.
I love videos you need to explore fresh fig trees also dried figs and all types of dried dates i would like to see that, that would be good
Yeah I would like to do a fig comparison one of these days
i felt like this was related to the tree tomato and it is. Solanum betaceum maybe you should look for that in the future :P
Episode 1 my friend :) I will be reviewing it again soon though to compare the red and orange varieties of it. :)
WHAAAT HOW COULD I MISS IT
I tried one of those at Kroger. Really tasty.
This shit cost me 8 dollars at my grocery store. Stated it tastes like vanilla? Definitely does not.
That savory flavor you're tasting is natural MSG :D
Does this mean that unless ripened on the plant they'll never ripen?
I believe so
I go cucumber/melon in taste but they have a bit of banana in the aroma; Also, that one you have looks a bit overripe.
Feel the same way about this fruit
Thanks Jared.
Where to get this fruit?
Is there a way to ripen them at home?
Bit late on the reply, but ripening fruit just takes time sitting out. Usually fruit is picked before it's ripe for a longer shelf life, but most fruit are better when you wait for it to ripen on the plant.
Those looked like coca leaves in the beginning intro...
they were!
Weird Explorer Oh Bolivia...
People chew them all day long on the side of the road. It was shocking to see at first but then I had some of the coca tea and noticed no effects. They are verrry far removed from cocaine.
Weird Explorer Doesn't it help with the altitude? I know if you chew them, they give a caffeine like boost, and act somewhat of a appetite suppressant...
It is common in my birth place but uncommon in Japan 😂
Ate one today wasn’t ripe I believe 😆😆😆 my dad decided to grow them
Will you PLEASE get a decent pocket knife to cut fruit with?! Lol always with the plastic knife.
I am traveling and its not worth checking a backpack. So the cost of that is ditching my knife whenever I board a plane. If I'm only in a place for a short period of time I don't bother and make due of what I can find. So here you get plastic.
Weird Explorer lol good point, I don't travel so I don't know how all that works
Its related to eggplant and tomato
Pepino melon is tasty to me.
I click on your videos so fast
Putting them in salads.... yoooo stop that
*facepalm* you know that you can find pepino melon in TEXAS
To me they taste like green tomatoes.
can i write new music for your videos?
Mealy.
I eat pepino melons
