i mean, there's a reason why act II town looks the most.. intact
Solid point
the harem girls would not agree with that statement, i'd assume
@@hazardeur the mercs were protecting the Town, didn't have access to the palace, those were the palace guards.
@@hazardeur 'looks' intact; point still stands 😃
Yeah...indeed..
I love how happy the act 2 merc always looks. Literally standing in a inferno with meteors dropping on his head and he still has that blissful expression.
"Thanks" ;)
It's not hurting him, and he gets to see the carnage close up. Why worry?
It's because "He put that to good use" :D

I usually let them keep the bow as a parting gift.
Before you shove them into a sewer? Kind of you.
Gentlemanly even.
i mean tbf; it was usually a rare-but-still-crappy bow around level 10ish... so it's not like you'd want it anyway... ER I MEAN VERY GENEROUS~!
ngmi my 5sox 5 20 poison damage facet bow won't go down the sewer...
I always sell the bow. That gold helps pay for the new merc!

I remember that for a very long time, the freeze merc from act 3 actually was my favorite.
ditto! I used the freeze merc always (20 years ago that I didn't understand the game)
Me to, I love lightning boy when I was 2 years old until now :)
Me too!
Same, but that was also when I was playing in Normal.
Lighning mage for the win
Hahaha this one was even funnier than usual xD .
The tripping over a dead minion and dying, the bra, and the kicking down the sewers entrance were great. Love your Asheara model.
Asheara’s snake was happy to see customer too!
Before LoD Mercs were left in the previous Act, which made all the Mercs viable in their own setting. That was cool!
This was good. In Act4 no more Mercs and in general the mercs were so weak. You only needed them in Duriel to take his first charge and then maybe Normal Act3 to freeze the Flayers.
It's funny how different dynamic the game has when you played at 640x480 and monsters basically agro you outside of screen and then there is no one to tank them but you.
Polearm guy was just so happy to be in the fire.
"Everything is fine. This is fine"
Sorceress: *gives A2 merc a bra*
Merc: *I'll put that to good use!*
I'll put that to gay use.

You sensitive comment summon a lewd bot lol
*sniff-sniff* 🤣
Now hes ranged.
Getting repeatedly clobbered by Duriel - "Thanks! Thanks! Thanks!"
That's the smile of a man who has seen things that no mortal should ever see.
Its just insane how accurate your animations are !
Quest covered; None. Thank you for your patience.
Mercenaries are NPCs players can hire to fight alongside them. While Mercenaries were largely a novelty in early versions of Diablo II, they are substantially upgraded in Diablo II: Lord of Destruction, and can be quite effective when properly equipped and supported.
00:01-00:10: Rogue Scouts are ranged attackers who use bows to attack from a distance. They are fairly fragile and must be kept from harm, but can dispense solid artillery support from behind the front lines. Their AI largely keeps them from harm, but they can become confused as to how far they should stand from the action, and will sometimes wander back and forth uselessly.
00:05; Inner Sight, which Illuminates monsters and decreases their ability to defend themselves.
00:08 the book of mercenaries, also known as the Toys“R”Us for hirelings. Desert mercenaries in act 2 (Emilio amongst them) are popular due to their auras, but also due to the runeword that you can equip them, such as “Insight”.
00:16-00:18 side note, this one is only because I am a “Friends” fan. This is where the transition music is from.
00:23-00:28 Mercs are offered to the player in different sizes, colors, and levels.
00:28-00:34 These mercs have a variety of auras. There are three types available on each difficulty level, though the auras found on Normal and Hell difficulty levels are the same. Combat (Normal): Prayer, (Nightmare): Thorns, (Hell): Prayer; Defense (Normal): Defiance, (Nightmare): Holy Freeze, (Hell): Defiance; Offense (Normal): Blessed Aim, (Nightmare): Might, (Hell): Blessed Aim.
00:29 Nike logo = Prayer aura.
00:34 - 00:36 if you hire a new merc, this will replace the one you own.
00:36 - 00:42 you have to unequip your current merc otherwise the items will be lost. I mean in this situation is a win-win for everyone, I guess.
00:47- 00:49 The mercenary states the same quote, regardless of the items you equip.
00:49 - 00:53 Skeletons, Swarms and Greater mummies in action.
00:49 - 00:53 Mercenary in the front, while the sorceress is casting a meteor from the backline.
00:55 - 00:55 Everything is fine. Friendly fire is harmless. Mercs are always happy.
00:55 - 01:10 The Iron Wolves of Act III are available from Asheara (and her lovely snake) in the Kurast Docks. These are the only magical mercs, and each one specializes in Lightning, Cold, or Fire. Their AI is similar to that of the Rogue mercs and they tend to stay behind the lines and attack from a distance, even though they carry shields and can achieve fairly high defense and resistances. Unfortunately, they are not as popular as the mercenaries in act 2, and player will only go to Asheara to resurrect them.
Thank you for bringing D2 back to life.
PS; I will too be playing D2R. You can find me under the name of the channel (for games) or DousKius#5779 in Discord. If you want to rush through normal or nightmare and I am online, give me a shout and I can help you out.

That was a snake??? For the life of me, I always thought Asheera was standing almost naked with a giant plank of wood on her shoulders. :D See this is why we needed Resurrected. :D
Thanks was wondering why that music was familiar
Mercs are offered to the player in different sizes, colors, and levels hahaha this
Reading your explanations is like watching a movie with same language subtitles: for the most part I'm reading what I already know but occasionally there'll be something I missed.
Thank you for that :)
I was expecting a scene with the sorc teleporting through the levels and dragging the merc along like an inanimate object. But this was also great =D
I was waiting for this the entire week, thank you.
Act 5 mercs are so good, that aren't even being mentioned 🤣
That water splash was actually very well-made.
Listen, as someone who doesn't typically like changes in their remastered late 90s/early 2000s games. The one D2R change I would like is a big buff to non-act2 mercenaries
The main thing that would need to happen is make Insight and infinity available on bows and swords.
And they can follow the lore and be resonable when doing that. Sure, let the act 2 mercs keep their airas while the others get other fixes to catch up. First, the inner sight skill that act 1 merc uses make flat defence penalty on the enemy meaning it doesn't do much. Fix that skill to remove a percentage of their defence that increase with level, even the amazon characters may level that skill then. The act three merc, the lightening ones should have static field, the fire one enchant (automatically enchants allies) for the cold ones I suggest Blizzard. It be a low level one but useful for crowd control. Such things.
easy way to fix it (more likely to happen) is to add auras to every merc.
best way to fix it (unlikely to happen) is to rework mercenary abilities altogether. This needs reworking several non-mercenary abilities, which would also be very nice, but alas, unlikely.
Act 1 mercs are fine...as long as you give them a faith bow...
@@touyang9897 Maybe they should have some useful gear before endgame, something not hideously expensive. Faith are very hard to come by.
Never has a video been more spot on.....and that's saying something for this channel's impeccable record.
That smug face when you are browsing for which merc got what aura and their level. Accurate.
Pretty accurate. Only forgot about act 5 barbarians merc (being also ignored by most players, which prefer keeping act 2 mercs for the rest of game)
There is a reason for that.
A5 merc is pretty much only good for bow sorc.
I used Merc from act 5 due 2 aetherwrath
Why isn't the Act 3 merc uesd? I had him and he was awesome. Saved my life so many times with his freezes.
@@samuelhartley1979 simply too weak. Deals no damage, only cold one has any utility with freezing enemies (but holy freeze mec does that too, and better), and also there are lots of powerful polearm runewords (insight, pride, infinity) most people want.
@@samuelhartley1979 Act2 Merc is just too good of a meatbag to pass up.
Act 5 mercs didn't even got a meantion, i feel that.
Great video as always carbot!
Throwing all of the clothes on Act2 is too accurate. It sucks when you accidentally forget to strip your rogue before sending her to the abyss. All your hand-me-down armor gone.
you gave the act 1 merc armor?
@@krynking9973 Cheaper than res-ing her all the time when she's got the durability of a wet flannel.
@@krynking9973 i have an eth breastplate and a mask, both with 3 chipped rubies, plus a short battle bow with 5 chipped topaz, all for my a1 merc. she can equip all those even if she's only level 2. every time i kiss her goodbye i strip all those from her and share to my next new character.
I want an act 2 merc pin. MVP of this entire series.

@@Stavroization Durga > Waheed!
It tickled me that he was standing in the flames getting beat on and he was SO FREAKING HAPPY about it. Like he’d found his life’s purpose.
Joking aside….they need some reworking. There’s obviously a problem when 99.9% of all builds (unofficial stat pulled out of my ass) use one thing. As a OG D2 player, I’m fully on board for a D2 LOD mode which preserves the original balance and a D2R mode which tweaks to the nines.
He is just really happy to be outside doing something and not standing in a tent doing nothing.
Mods are probably a better alternative than hoping the current dev team are connected to what the fanbase (rather than groups like the CCP) want tbh.
There are a few that tweak mercenaries, Basemod for Diablo 2 is one I've been using lately. Lets rogues equip crossbows and amazon bows and adds an A4 mercenary (albeit mostly just a barbarian with a different weapon type). A3s are still worthless though. It also lets them equip the full player set up, so sets can definitely help merc builds even from the start.
I've used a3 merc with sanctuary aura from gear, i've used a5 merc for my goldfinder barbarian and you can equip that bow with vigor aura for some fun with the a1 merc. Admitted they weren't the cookie cutter game beating builds, but they defenitely worked as intended. I wouldn't mind them getting a bit balanced so the a2 one isn't by default always the easy choice.
Just check some mods or try to do it one for yourself and play with friends. I was waiting 20 years for some changesand it never happend.
Yes. D2 purists keep saying that the thing that makes it superior to D3 is the variety of builds you have to work up to. They are right that it is better, but the "freedom" to put all your ability points into vitality with the occasional dip in strength just to equip stuff... is not it. Maybe they mean the freedom to do wrong builds?
As for class builds, there is only two maybe three viable builds for each class that dumps all the points into the same 4 skills and disregard everything else. It is like 90% of the skill tree don't even exist and that's... just frankly, bad game design. Some skills evolve almost quadratically, some linear, some inverse square. Plenty of skills (usually passive ones) that are only useful to put one point in and never again because of how poorly they scale, but you're still "free" to waste skill points in them.
The derpy act II mercenary face gets me everytime
0:52 "you want some of this?!"
The most I ever used an act 1 Merc was in HC. I equipped her and my enchantress with really good bows and we just teleported around shooting things.
This was one of my highest level characters in HC and I used her enchant my friends and second account. Was kinda just for fun, but she ended up never dying. (She has probably disappeared by now, since I dropped classic for Resurrected)
Her firing constantly without needing to walk towards the enemy was what made it work, we were like a teleporting turret.
Edit: She is still around, I just refreshed her! Neat.
you'll forget some day and she'll be gone. rebuild her in d2r!
I always played a fury druid so a cold rogue seemed like a natural fit
@@legion999 but just imagine... a HOLY FREEZE aura on your merc. doesn't just chill the one guy she shoots... chills everyone on the screen! (pretty much.)
That drag of the merc at the end. Hilarious.
I love how the act 1 merc gets kicked into the sewers.
i mean... it's totally accurate. how many players who knew what they were doing DIDN'T make a mad dash across Kurast to speak to Greiz? xD
"I'll bet you wonder--" "yea yea shut up and help me trade this merc in for something decent..."
Kurast is Asheara, A for effort though, i still like my act 1 merc since reminds me of diablo 1
@@SSJ3CyLink oops lol... yea, i haven't been sleeping well. Lut Gholein is the town i meant... at least i got the merc trader's name right xD

I hope this series never ends!
Tha paly coming to town is still my favourite vid of yours.

Best friend finally posted another one
Ahahhah, perfect as always!!))) We love you Carbot!)
No wonder Asheara moved to Caldeum in D3. Also, remeber how you couldn't resurrect or even equip (least I think you couldn't) back in vanilla D2, so you were alone in act IV? Man, the LoD expansion really added so much, and that's even before all the Enigmas.
I confirm you couldnt equip
Not only could you not equip, they couldn't travel with you at one point. You would have to buy a new merc per act from whatever act you're in.
Not to mention that they were less durable than a soggy paper napkin.
runewords arguebly broke the game however which LoD added soooo
And you could not heal mercs with potions (via portrait) in classic D2.
the bra falling on the face of that act 2 mercenaries .. its really all those very little things that u find in all those episode that makes it awesome . thank u thank u thank u again for that minute .
At this point, I hope they make a canon version of the Act 2 Merc and give him some post Diablo 2 lore.
Ohh man this entire diablo series cracks me up. You/yall are so talented
Act 3 Had me laughing
Spot on! :D
I see the sorc was checking out the entire “package” before deciding.
well... level, aura... what else is there to check out? everything else is just carbon-copy of the next/previous one xD
Why would someone not?
I like the little Seinfeld sting at the transition
On point every. DAMN. time. Love it so much 😂
I get more laughs-per-second (LPS) out of these animations than just about anything on UA-cam.
I always used the Act 1 merc, because I liked that they could hang back and hit from range, instead of rushing to their death. Plus, you got one for free. And they could have Frost arrow.
In modern D2R, tecnically some classes can actually benefit from Act 1 merc more than Act 2, however that would require being able to make a Faith bow (provides Fanaticism) which... is WAAAAY more expensive than the typical Spirit you'd put on a Act 2 merc :\
@@worldiefeard8396 u mean insight
There’s some useful Bow Runewords for act 1 merc, but none that are on par with the pole arm runewords, as wel as the normal aura the act 2 merc has, plus the jab…etc etc it’s just the best choice in the game.
@@worldiefeard8396 spirit on act 2 merc?
@@LaddRusso91 I'm clearly dumb and I meant Insight :| Sorry, i took too many 3 socketed Monarchs to the knee lately...
Hahahhaah everything on point!! Looking forward to see more
I remember seeing a lot of act 3 mercs back in HC and Ladder days. Usually the ice caster. I think they had a gearset that gave them an aura or something, been too long though.
There used to be a bug where you equip a3 Merc's with runewords that give holy fire/holy shock. You just equip-unequip over and over to get like level 100 holy fire and 1 shot everything. Blizz patched that quick but man was it fun while it lasted. People would die halfway across the map from where your character was.
in vanilla D2 the act3 merc was the best, but in LoD they did extreme nerfs to all mercs except act 2 which they buffed outrageously and added the ability to give mercs gear which completely upended the merc meta to what it is today where act 2 (nightmare) merc is literally the ONLY viable option for literally all classes and builds.
@@phoenixlich Slight disagreement. For Summon Necros any Act 2 merc is useful, not just the Nightmare ones.
@@phoenixlich "act 2 (nightmare)" -> Blessed Aim merc in some cases works better, so I'd say holy freeze, might and blessed aim are the only ones in use.
@@phoenixlich you can make act 1/3/5 mercs work , they just req a lot of expensive runewords .
This is soooooooo good and on point 🤣 Thx for the hole D2 Series so far Carbot 😁
Showing which merc has which aura is highly overstated :D You always had to look up Arreat Summit for Defensive, Offensive and Combat and which difficulty gives which aura.
and then years later you find a guide and find out that the stats for the mercenaries are different based on which difficulty you got them on - a stupid feature which should have never existed - and that you have to hire your merc in normal in order for them to wear end game gear.
the animation in each episode is such. GENIUS
When I played this game, I have always replaced my mercenary with the currently available ones. I never noticed how the desert ones are that much stronger.
It's just the auras. It makes them far too good. You can equip them with some of the most useful runewords in the game as well to supplement your own heroes power far better then any other mercenary.
Honestly I hate it. cause I would love act 3 mercs or even act 5 mercs to be good. But alas, 20 years later and no changes.
Thanks diablo 2 puritans :/
these keep getting better lmao
I used Act 3 Mercs, they were quite useful, well... I made mine be useful xD
Thank you hero, you defeated diablo and did what no one else could.

Dude, this was AWESOME!
On nightmare difficulty the mercs have different auras. My favorite the holy freeze...
The act2 Merc humour never gets old
They need to let us get 1 of each and swap them out.
The happy merc's face being dragged out of trash can has made my day. :)
Good thing youtube got rid of dislikes so everyone can recognize this video as perfection.
i dislike your comment
Sad... but true!
The neglect of Act 3 mercs was painfully accurate!
This highlights even more the sound arguments of your video of balancing mercs. It's way too uneven.
Yea It got little better with with D2:R 2.4 patch. But still problem with Iron Wolfs mercs is that they are too stupid, they cast AOE on a single mobs then single target spells on crowds. For melee classes Rogues are actually quite good mercs, you can give them Faith and get Fanatism aura
The good ol Emilio!! Nothing can beat him with Trachery + Andy Visage + Insight eth in thresher
He didnt remind us that he is our best friend... :-(
Act 3 mercs skit was so on point lol
Well. Actually, barb with lawbringer or delirium is quite good.

Your characters are so fricking adorable. I wish there was a mod that would turn everything into your cartoons like what was done for Starcraft III. I'd buy it in a New York Minute.
One of my favorite things was the concept of Merc-bombs. Get a cheap merc, throw a bunch of gear that has the cast--on-death property, send them out to get stomped, and watch the fireworks go off
That cast spell gear, was that expansion content? Because I don't remember it being in the vanilla/base game.
@@yonokhanman654 I might actually be getting vanilla D2 mixed up with the median xl mod, I've played so much of both I get things confused
yeah for the longest time the merc from act 3 freeze was also my go to. helped me so much get past certain areas
D2R has the opportunity to buff those underused hireling but of course the D2 purists rejected that.
lol the devs are shitting all over the game and changing whatever they want - and if they fail at changing things they blame the community and get you guys to fight each other like dogs. dear lord...
So accurate! I even love the Friends transition music! lol

@@Difdauf people been saying that forever, yet we just received patch 2.3 for D2R 😂
Come play Project Diablo 2. Season 4 just started yesterday.
It's as if Blizzard had continued working on D2. Balances to skills, items, new endgame content, fixes to broken game mechanics, updates to crafting, tons of quality of life changes, improved graphics, and more.
@@sepg5084 wow incredible patch 2.3 !!!! I can't believe it !!!!
@@ChronicledHero Path of diablo for me, to me if feels like a continuation of diablo 2 with new patches. A new patch is coming any day now with supposedly a good amount of content
Of course I still think median xl is the best diablo ever, just not online. Not the current version but the older version when it was being made by Brother Laz, spent so many hours on that mod
The "Friends" transition music was 😆.
While I was a child playing D2, I never knew the A2 mercs were good. I always preferred the mages... because magic.
I know better now.
Me too, but also in pre-expansion D2 things were quite different. You could not heal or gear up merc, I am not sure if you could even resurrect him or you had to buy a new one. Problem with Iron Wolfs is their AI is bad, they cast single target spell onto crowds and AOE spells on single mobs.
@@jeffsaffron5647 Mercs were also limited to the act in which you found them. You couldn't carry an A2 merc to Act 3 or 4 in the beginning.
Act I mercs are so bad that I don't even bother getting one, and Act II mercs are so good that I never really consider getting Act III mercs XD.
Problem is act 2 mercs are best, act 3 mercs should have high level skills: Meteor, Hydra, Enchantment, Fireball and similar setups to cold and lighting ones. In melee they should have blessed shield and zeal. Barbarian maercs should have Berserk, Concentration, Stun, Bash, all shouts at max level = (Merc level -shout level)/2 with masteries in all 2 hand no spear/pole weapon and being able to wield barbarian only helms so you could give e.g. IK armor, helm and maul. Act 1 should also have dodge, critical, and additionally spamming physical skills like piercing arrow.
The barbarian merch is able to wear barb only helms like immortal king
honestly dont think people get why Act 2 mercs are the best its not much with the skills ... kinda ...
@@THAC0MANIC to be fair, it's a combination of the fact they can equip Polearms (which happen to have the strongest runeword auras, notably Spirit and Infinity) AND the passive aura itself. Holy Freeze, Devotion, Prayer and True Aim all have much better use than literally anything the other mercs can provide.
@@Dinklboy he will use some andariel or gulliame anyway.
@@worldiefeard8396 spirit on a polearm? I think u meant insight
LOL that is so good man, the most hilarious one in a long time!
What Blizzard could have done to make all the other mercs usable:
Rogues - Upgrade to cold/exploding arrow once they hit the skill lvl requirement and also be capable of using crossbows.
Iron Wolves - Lightning + energy shield or Thunder storm/ Fireball + cast enchant on your character/ Cold is already good but maybe add Cold Mastery at lvl 30?
Barbarians: Add the use of Battle orders and wield any weapon a Barbarian character can.
Considering that cool stuff on ranged weapons tend to be on crossbows or very hard to come by I get the inpression that the develooers wanted the rogues, well any non act 2 merc, to suck.
as a blizzard sorc, I feel this DEEP in my bones...
It would help the rogues' case if they didn't have to find the perfect position before they started shooting. No sense of urgency!
Right in the middle of the pack! 😂
This was the best D2 episode yet I think. I was dying at this one.
So much truth...to be honest I was kinda hoping that D2:R they might tweak the other mercs to make them actually useful ( I mean you could take everyone but the Act 2 mercs out of the game and nobody would notice )
Loled very hard haha. Keep up the great content best buddy!
Me, playing a Paladin who sticks with the Act I rogue: "Oh."
The only reason to keep act 1 merc is if you give her Faith for Fanaticism, but if you're Paladin, then you have your own higher level Fana, and there is just no point at all.
i keep the act 1 merc until she starts becoming a chore to keep alive
There's no shame in it.
I love the merc always smiling while on fire

Him sitting in the fire really got me lol.
New players like me look at meta guides and be like: ok stick with NM act 2 mercs and you are good for life. To this day I don’t even know what act 3 or 5 mercs look like because there is no incentive for me to touch them.
Funily enough, in original D2 act 2 mercs were the most useless ones and act 3 Iron Wolves with ice were the only ones of any use.
(at least from what I remember)
Awww that's not fair. The companions of act 3 are pretty useful too xD
0:58 Finally I've been waiting for. Act III NPC with Act III merc.
