Happy Friday everyone! So Subaru has finally announced the EPA rated range for the Solterra. The Premium trim with the 18” wheels gets 228 miles on a full charge, while the Limited/Touring on the 20” wheels gets 222 miles. We saw 235 miles on the on-board range computer on a full charge. Expect us to do a follow up video with some more extensive range testing once we get one back home for a full week to test.
IONIQ 5 AWD does 256 miles EV6 AWD does 274 miles ID4 Pro AWD does 251 miles Unless this is priced a good amount below those options, it’ll be a very mediocre EV.

I would check your sources and make a correction if needed. Only 100 kW max rate would be a deal breaker for many.
25:18 I disagree. If you have sensitive control of your right foot, one-pedal regenerative braking can be super smooth. I've never had my passengers complain about car sickness and my wife is prone to it. It's the people who are used to two pedal braking that don't take their foot off of the pedal slow enough that causes the issue. It takes practice to be smooth.

Very disappointing it having the charge rate of my 2017 Bolt. I suppose it might help them achieve Toyota's goal of a 10 year battery warranty but we use our ICE Forester for road trips so the Solterra is off the list until it has a modern charge curve that is competitive.

Thanks for the review. The black cladding is fine with me and actually gives the Cosmic Pearl White color a contemporary and cool black and white two tone effect. Subaru excels with AWD, X-Mode, Eyesight, and although I considered other EVs--I live at the top of a mountain in NC and we have been getting more snow in recent years, so the X-Mode and AWD has been a lifesaver. Since they only made 6,500 and I made it into the queue, I did not want to wait another year. The range and charging speed suffice fine for us. We will probably drive our 2019 Forrester for longer trips for awhile. I also feel the Subaru brand is reliable, their corporate brand beats out some of the other EV makers, and I am feeling grateful I was able to be an early adopter.
High horsepower is a Tesla thing so that they could boast 0-62 in less than 4s. Most people drive like your mom(get it? YOUR MOM lol), it would also be safer since you dont have idiots that would always boast "it accelerates 0-60 in 3s"

I'm glad Subaru is finally getting an EV, and I'm buying a Solterra in a few weeks. The interior is all Toyota and is shared with the Bz4x (from which it is based) as well as the new Prius, including the seats. I'm not thrilled about the dashboard, I wish they would have taken the cues from the Venza instead. It has a more traditional instrument cluster with a small holographic that displays your speed and other data on the windshield. I realize the battery pack is expensive, but for +$50k for the Touring I would have hoped the interior was a little nicer and not just ported from the Prius.
The big question is “how much” and is this the big battery version or the small battery version with a larger capacity pack to follow? Probably the latter given the disappointing range figures. On paper this thing blows, but when you take a closer look that range figure is about what you get from a Mach-E SR AWD which makes sense if there’s gonna be a bigger battery option down the road. Compared to an Ioniq 5 or EV6 this thing does not stack up, so if this is the biggest pack you’ll be able to get I have no idea why you buy this car over the competition. Again price comes into play. If economy is your focus, ditch the AWD and get a Leaf, Bolt or a KoNiro twin. If you want premium, why this over anything else out there?
In terms of range, you have to factor in this is an AWD first attempt from both Subaru & Toyota. Don’t think the Mach-E or ID.4 at this price point would match this one’s off-road capability. And ‘does it have a frunk?’ is not the million dollar question. Sofyan is so focused on this minimal space that’s only in a few EV’s like Tesla or his Mach-E…it really shouldn’t matter since there’s so much more interior space. And the straight line 0-60 times are not what these types of EV are intended for…they’re comfort cruisers or people movers. Not every models needs a performance edition with 4 sec 0-60 times. If so, maybe he should only be reviewing sports cars, GTs & hot hatches. Just be more be balanced my man…
I get better economy with My AWD Forester.......Low purchase price...low depreciation.....And in Iowa, lower annual liscence fees.........Iowa already has very high licensing fees and are planning even higher fees for electrics......Maybe as much as $1000 dollars annualy,,,,Maybe more........1% annually of purchase price plus $400 more for electric........Paul

200 miles of range is terrible, manufactures need to focus on range of at least 300. Factor in use of AC or Heater range will dramatically be reduced by 40%. My Hyundai IONIQ 5 only fully charges at 80% and with the use of the heater the mileage is affected by 50%, ridiculous. Manufacturers and reviewers need to step up and give us the real world road tests.
@@MrChadder007 all I know is that when I use the heater in my Ionic, range is severely affected. I haven't had the need to use the AC yet, but I imagine it would be the same scenario.
Guessing the prices is going to be in the low 40's before tax credits. Sad that Toyota and Subaru could NOT come up with a 300+ mile range for their first EV. Based on my experience with an EV with a 240 mile range on a full charge, anything below that number become problematic when you want to take a long trip because of the unreliability of the fast charging network in the US. Only last year Toyota was bad mouthing EV's and so making one that fails to meet or exceed the competition makes me wonder if they're trying to discourage EV buyers so that they can later say, see, we told you the EV proposition was a not a good idea. After all, this is the company that refuses to give up hydrogen EV's.
40K for a new car is cheap nowadays.....I mean, hasn't your pay at your job tripled here along with prices? Mine did, NOT! Yes, 40K is obsurd!! And good luck paying cash for that.

I think it looks quite nice, not everyone needs an EV that has 400hp and does 0-60 in 3 seconds. Someone needs to attend to the affordable market, cos everyone seems to be doing only the premium thing. I also wish Subaru did a little more with the interior, I mean this interior is quite nice, but I wish it was more Subaru, the infotainment is an upgrade tho, because Toyota’s infotainment is way better than Subaru’s
The problem is at $40k there’s way better options in this price range. Yes, you may not need the power but if its the same price who cares plus they have better range. I for one don’t like that they’re trying to pass these off as crossovers. That’s a generous term for this and the EV6. The cut off back just cuts off valuable capacity back there.
There is no way i would pay over $50k for the limited trim and for a range of 225 miles or so. The HP is not the issue, the range is low and what will be the range loss in cold weather? The car seems ok otherwise but pricey with low range. No thanks
I think it looks pretty handsome. Maybe too much cladding but overall I think it works in gray, and the interior is basically all Toyota. I just wish it had more range though.
This an exciting car, because Subaru and EV is a perfect pairing. And, that interior with the cockpit like layout is amazing. I really hope this kicks off well
This is a joke is a of an offering. The interior is odd, no glovebox makes absolutely no sense and the gauge cluster is blocked by the wheel. The excuse for no frunk is hilarious, these will almost never go off road especially with that range. Range and charging speed are near the bottom, if not at the bottom of the class. Even if it undercuts the competition in price I don't see a reason to choose this over the other offerings.
It's best to have enough range to get you a couple of hours down the road on road trips, but not too much more, since 90% of the time you'll just be hauling around a large percentage of dead weight batteries when driving locally and charging at home.
@@jml9550 Really doubt they would do that. All EVs are artificially priced high. For anything premium, Tesla blow the competition out of the water for 300 to 400 miles. It’s Toyota they will price it same as Kia and Hyundai and charge a more expensive interest rate because they are Toyota. Japanese still just riding on their nameplate only, but for how long?
Thank you, gentlemen! My Solterra has been ordered and expected in April. Looking forward to getting an EV, hopefully with free charging, as gas prices are going to be upwards to $7.00 per gallon soon. 😁
220 miles EPA range is more like 170 miles in the winter, maybe less, if you live somewhere it gets cold. That ~50 mile range reduction could significantly lower the car's utility for some use cases. In my case living in the PHL metro area, it would take day trips to say NYC or Baltimore without having to public charge off the table.

4500 lbs. and only 218 HP. Yeah, that's way underpowered, just like many other Subaru's. I had a 2013 CrossTrek and it was the most underpowered car I ever owned.
@@baronvonjo1929 Yh there are lot of cars the size of a rav4 or a Highlander in Europe with 100hp and even 90hp but a least most most them come with manual transmissions to make most of the little power
I’m confused on these electric cars, a full tank of gas will get you probably somewhere between 300-350 miles…but this electric car will only get you maybe 220?? Wtf is the point?? Where does the power come from?? How can you really “off road” with a plug in? What am I missing??
Put it like this, your suppose to charge ur vehicle at home, my sister spend like 10 to 12 dollars on 300 miles for her Tesla. This is zero maintenance aside from brakes and tires.
@@dragodavidCE geez, that’s good. Do you know how long it usually takes to charge? Wish I could get an EV right now but I wouldn’t have a dedicated charging place other than maybe at work, lack of infrastructure worries me, and the battery time taking a hit during to cold winters. Hopefully the tech and infra get much better during my lifetime
I am glad they came out with an electric vehicle...however, I would love a hybrid model. We had lots of power outages in my area last summer...so, I have trust issues with all electric.
Really wish I knew the answer to this. I hate this trend. It should either open or just be a solid piece of sheet metal. Even worse: most don't offer a shade
Question... as hybrids/electric/plug-ins etc. Become more available, do you think there will be a continued rise in gasoline prices in order to push evs? Also do you think this is the way to go with the mile range being so low compared to gasoline fueled cars, or should we wait until the batteries and range get better?

Keep the outback XT. Wait for next generation. That's what I'll do. I have the 2018 Honda crv awd touring for my wife and the 2022 ascent for the family. If I want to trade the crv, I would get the Kia ev 6 gt line awd or the Volvo ev instead.
As the owner of a 2021 Outback XT Onyx that would be a big step down.
Don't do it... EV is not the near future, flash came to warn me. Lol
Is that Alex behind the camera? :) Love you guys.
I'm honestly glad this car doesn't have too much power - we don't need everyone driving around in cars that go from 0-60 in 3 seconds lmao
Yeah, it's already seconds quicker than a Forester.
Definitely best looking Subaru in there lineup
I too describe cars as handsome ever since starting to watch this channel lol.
Says the Buick owner $120 ( 500 miles) a tank of gas vs $10 home charge in 9 hours. To get to 500 miles x2 or 20 bucks.… What a brainiac U R
We’ll said 🎉couldn’t agree more!
13:47 Why did the rear seats sound so hollow?
Love the joined force review, like Marvel and DC in one movie. Great job.
235 range is underwhelming.
Depends on price. If they can sell it at lower than Ioniq 5 or EV6, then it is ok.
It's best to have enough range to get you a couple of hours down the road on road trips, but not too much more, since 90% of the time you'll just be hauling around a large percentage of dead weight batteries when driving locally and charging at home.
It’s adequate for vast majority.
Are you driving 150+ miles
inside of 3 days?
@@jml9550 Really doubt they would do that. All EVs are artificially priced high. For anything premium, Tesla blow the competition out of the water for 300 to 400 miles. It’s Toyota they will price it same as Kia and Hyundai and charge a more expensive interest rate because they are Toyota. Japanese still just riding on their nameplate only, but for how long?
@@StevenHoagland Yes but in winter time, your range will be cut in half.
yay Alex is the other channel I would watch for a review like this so you might as well do a cross over episode.
Would love a best of the year collab with Alex!
Thank you, gentlemen! My Solterra has been ordered and expected in April. Looking forward to getting an EV, hopefully with free charging, as gas prices are going to be upwards to $7.00 per gallon soon.
😁
Enjoy your Toyota. I cancelled my reservation.
That rear centre console spot looks like in the future a screen might be present
so nice to see the japanese dabble in GM grade badge engineering!
And if you have a heavy foot or you like to drive fast, 140 miles.
It’s got a heat pump which minimizes cold temperature range reductions.
The range is fine for Soccer Moms (and Dads) but not for someone who wants to go anywhere in the boonies.
hmm.. a bit torn on this...The Range and time to charge gets me considering 2 pretty well known companies. but will change maybe,,So No Rear wiper? i saw dirty on the back window if you go offroad in the dirt gonna be hard to see again when you get on the road.
Very informative, great job as usual. Don't stop what you do.
Why does it look like the rav4 prime???
Subaru first ev. I wait out until further improvement to range and torque
I totally agree with Alex on the one pedal drive!
Interior looks busy, cheap and dated already. It’s a bit of a shame. Just looks like there’s been a lot of cost cutting on interior. Gloss piano black? So last decade…
Subaru interior is the reason I never consider one.
they need to reduce the cladding by about 50% and it'll be fine, it's a bit too much. Not sure why they went with so much on this and the new wrx.
The best thing we can say about this Subaru is that it does NOT have a despicable CVT.
This is a cool SUV but the omission of a glove box and a panoramic roof that doesn't open is kind of strange
My Subaru Forester 2020 can go close to 500 miles on one tank of gas. I will only buy an electric car if it came with the same charge miles.
How well are the batteries going to perform in temperatures around Zero to 2 degrees?
the black accent on the fender makes it look rugged.....im 50 and i prefer more elegant looking cars...i think i like body color for that part
Has the wheels falling off issue been resolved yet?
I always have to say one thing: You are just such an marvelous car reviewer of all time. Also I totally in love with this EV. I rather have to get this vehicle over it's competition. But excellent review sofyan.
Nobody and I mean nobody does cladding like Subaru😄
LMAOOOO I was waiting for this comment 🤣🤣
@@user-xf5dj1up8g Wait no longer😁
How it is compared to Rav4 prime? Does it gets overheated in hot summer off road 🤔?
How does the one pedal drive work in a traffic jam situation where we need to suddenly brake sometimes and there is no brake pedal?
It's Subaru's new color: Dusty Blue
Does it work -40’C whether?
4500 lbs. and only 218 HP. Yeah, that's way underpowered, just like many other Subaru's. I had a 2013 CrossTrek and it was the most underpowered car I ever owned.
Instant torque makes it lively... Highway passing will be slow tho
@@JogBird 218HP electric is more like 260HP gas due to less powertrain losses, which is plenty for most people.
Slow. But at least we don't live in Europe with engines making 100 hp if not less.
@@baronvonjo1929 Yh there are lot of cars the size of a rav4 or a Highlander in Europe with 100hp and even 90hp but a least most most them come with manual transmissions to make most of the little power
We wouldn’t call 0-60 in 6.2 seconds to be underpowered 🤷🏻♂️
This sounds like a fairly good option for what the majority of folks would want in an EV. I wonder what the launch pricing is going to be like.
How would this do on soft powdery sand? Run flat tires? Does it have the same wheel falling off issue as the Toyota?
I’m curious, why are all the EVs going with this full glass roof that doesn’t open?
Really wish I knew the answer to this. I hate this trend. It should either open or just be a solid piece of sheet metal. Even worse: most don't offer a shade
@@paulhenryxray right. It’s the dumbest thing ever
@@garren588 so glad to hear I’m not the only weirdo out there that still likes opening sunroofs 😂
@@paulhenryxray I love a nice sunroof. You can get fresh air without having all the windows down. It’s perfect to me lol
Why a glass roof at all? Hate them.
What! No rear window wiper! How did that happen?
That charging time and range is not going to cut it...
Does it coast on d without regen,or do you have allways a bit? In other words does it freewheel?
Anyone else think the front end looks like it's been in an accident? 😂
looks like a ford
Question... as hybrids/electric/plug-ins etc. Become more available, do you think there will be a continued rise in gasoline prices in order to push evs? Also do you think this is the way to go with the mile range being so low compared to gasoline fueled cars, or should we wait until the batteries and range get better?
That is the current’s administration’s plan. Thats why they cut most incentives for oil companies to produce more.
Gas prices have nothing to do with evs being pushed but k
@@Gadgettime potential profit is what determines oil extraction, refinement and gasoline production, not the current administration. It’s a global commodity in a (mostly) capitalist world.
@@tpolerex7282 you are absolutely right potential profit determines it. The current administration policies capped it. There is no incentive for oil gasoline companies to produce more.
God that cladding is stupid, it does not need that, everything looks so cheap esp the interior. Look at what they did to the new WRX. Mazda has the same issues with useless cladding.
Yes, it is like they hired a 12 year old to style the new cars.
What a rav4
This is a real nice interior.
with the ugliest stearing wheel ever
looks pretty basic inside
Subaru's latest wheel cladding design and color looks like absolute 💩, as does the interior.
Hey Sofyan, what kind of camera do you use? Thank you in advance
Range really disappoints me.
Finally, a Subaru that won’t burn oil!
They haven't done that in 20 years, unless you mean the racer boys thrashing the WRX.
@@davidmccarthy6061 the foresters and crosstrek definitely did too. My 2014 forester was burning oil before I got rid of it. The cvt was also replaced by 60k miles
“Triple XXX mode” 😹
Steering column looks like an long alien neck!
I see Alex being reflected on the grill of the car.
Any Eyesight? Cross Traffic Alert, etc.?
This car is a BYD. Toyota and Subaru realised EVs are here to stay. They both panicked asked BYD to make them an EV car quick just to have their foot in the game and not lose market share.
Really?!,, Do you have evidence that this is actually a BYD contract construction or
Toyota/subaru?
Does it have a rear wiper? I don't see it. Hopefully it doesn't need one.
I have the same concern as how it would work without a rear wiper, especially when one drives in off-road and rear glass covered with dust. I was surprised reviewers made no comment about it.
finally they brought us something cool! love this car
Great collaboration! I have a reservation but I'm still waiting to see about pricing
What phone is that in the charging compartment? I hope it’s a pro max, because if it’s a smaller phone it seems to be a tight fit and any larger one won’t be able to charge in there.
I love this car so much its amazing wow wonderful looks good
