Alex, one other thing that prospects should know that you didn’t mention is the very limited allocation for the US in the first year of production. It’s going to be hard for buyers to get their hands on a Solterra for a while. Love the EV content on this channel!

I have a deposit for one but working with a dealer has been impossible with them not responding. It was easier dealing with Tesla which is not all that great either. Your right with Alex getting special treatment. With gas at $6 buying EV became more normal. The RAV4 prime would have been a good natural path before full EV.

Subaru being the smallest big brand out there, this isn't a huge surprise.

Coming from a RAV4 and looking to get an EV one would think this would be the EV for me, but it's not. Initially the specs were disappointing and now after this longer look at the vehicle it's still underwhelming. I think the black panels are ugly, the steering column and dash are weird, lack of glove box storage, no rear wiper, slower charging, lowish range. For me thats just way too many negatives that outweigh the ride height and low price. Not a tradeoff that's worth it imo.

I’ve had a RAV4 for the last 15 years and just bought the Solterra yesterday. The only negative for me is the planning around the slow charging. We’ll see how it goes, but so far the other negatives you’ve pointed out just don’t stand out to me at all. I got a darker color as well because I didn’t like the black panels either. All of the EV cars are rolling out with that look, so there isn’t much style choice right now.

I believe if you investigate a bit on the battery supplier you will appreciate the fact this car and Toyota BZ4X will have the most reliable batteries in the market. Also I would bet that real world range will be higher than advertise..this is a car you will drive for over 10 years no issues...I just put a deposit on this 2 days ago after withdrawing my deposit from KIA EV6...EV6 has SK innovation batteries using pouch battery technology ( possibly stolen from LG chem..read up on their current law suit), not the greatest and highly susceptible to thermal runaway..there is already video on the KIA EV6 of fire after collision, this issue was common 10-12 years ago not in 2022...

Seems like Subaru and Toyota are willing to take some polarizing risks that they wouldn't dare do with their volume offerings like the Forrester or RAV4. The lack of a glovebox seemed shocking at first, but then I realized that I only use mine to store the manuals, registration, and insurance card. Still not sure what the benefit is from removing it, though. The 2-tone front fenders, the lack of a power passenger seat, the lack of turn signal repeaters on the BZ4X (at least from what I could see), the weird gauge cluster...all bother me, yet somehow I'm still thinking I might want one.

    • @afcgeo882

Most Toyotas and Subarus don’t offer a power passenger seat and it’s likely there are components where the glove box would be. The “engine” compartment is quite small. Maybe a hydraulic box or a pump? Turn signal repeaters are for European/Japanese market cars.

You know I would really be surprised if car manufacturers aren't ready for both solar upgrade options as well as wireless charging. These 2 things alone start making range and charge time a smaller condition of purchase.
As we all know wireless charging has different limits than a cord can- it can enable faster charging in the case of a phone if it is enabled to do so.
I am on the list for this, because honestly anyone that drives enough in their daily could use a capable vehicle. And anyone that drives enough is tired of the noise, smells and maintenance of the ICE versions.

About how manufactors can choose the 0-60 time in BEVs... it's true of any vehicle from planes to tanks to super carriers and space ships... It's called engneering... For an Gas car you can 100% change it's 0-60 time with out touching the motor... You can change the cars weight, tires, suppesion and most importantly the ECU tune and transmission like gear ratios just like a BEV... Really I would rather have a digital transmisiion with a shifter/padels so I can control the 0-60 or as most do in Gas and Battery cars.... drives modes.... Besides it's only a matter of time before someone tunes a Solterra to get all the speed it's capible of.

I don't think this will be the boon to the Northern states you think it will. 228 miles EPA likely means a highway range under 200 miles in GOOD conditions. The heat pump will definitely minimize the cold weather range loss, but it won't eliminate it. I can't speak for its heat pump efficiency, but I would think it naive to think the heat pump will limit the loss to under 20-30 miles.
When InsideEVs and OutOfSpec did the highway range test on the AWD Ioniq 5 during the cold, they got like 226 and 197 (well, 190-something) miles against an EPA range of 254. And it too has a heat pump. If the Ioniq 5 with a heat pump and a NET battery capacity of 77 kwh could fall under 200 miles, this car with a net battery capacity closer to a Bolt is going to go much lower.
And yeah, it has a battery heater, but so too does the AWD Ioniq 5. In good conditions, it maxes around 230+ kw. When OutofSpec/InsideEVs tested it in the cold (don't remember which, they work together, so it doesn't really matter), it couldn't break 100 kw. I highly doubt this car, that maxes at 100 kw in optimal conditions, is going to get a practical DC fast charging rate in the cold, battery heater be damned.
If these guys really wanted to make a car suited for the Northern states, I don't think they would have stopped at the ground clearance, heat pump, and battery heater.

The gross and usable battery back is closer to a Bolt or Kona EV, the fast charging is closer to Leaf Plus, the level 2 charging is actually less than a 2017 Bolt (even the '22 Bolt hits 11 kw!), etc. I get adding a motor for AWD raises the price, but rest of this car is specced to match an entry level EV from 5+ years ago. If AWD wasn't standard, I would argue this should start just a little north of a Bolt EUV because of its size. Since AWD is standard I would say the upper half of the $30s is reasonable for the base, with a loaded model coming out in the low $40Ks. But the base starting in the $40Ks? Hell no.

To add to what @John Apel said, the fact that there's an auxiliary PTC heater to supplement the heat pump when needed doesn't remove the benefit of having the heat pump. @appleiphone69, you seem to be saying that because the heat pump can't meet full heating needs all of the time it shouldn't be considered useful, and isn't a worthwhile addition. But think of it this way: You're going to have a compressor anyway because you need it for the air conditioning. You'd need the resistive heater anyway if you didn't have a heat pump. So adding the additional valves and controls to enable reversing the heat flow and adding cold weather range isn't even a big weight or component increase for the benefit it gives.
And to expand on the building side, like John, I also have a heat pump system. It maintains its rated output down to 5°F, 80% to -13°F, and 70% to -22°F. I do have auxiliary resistance heat fitted, but even at -13°F, I haven't needed to use it. I might not even at -22°F if it didn't last too long since building thermal mass will keep things warm for awhile. Now, below -22°F, I would, because to protect itself, the equipment I got has a thermal shut-off at that temperature, but it has been over a decade since we've had temperatures that cold here, ad they don't last long. If we only need to use the resistance heat at that frequency, we still come out ahead for using the heat pump the rest of the time instead of not having a heat pump and using resistance the whole time. Are there parts of the world that this type of system wouldn't work? Yes, but the overwhelming majority of the world's population lives in compatible temperature climate ranges. It's just a matter of properly choosing the equipment for the application. Obviously, district climate control using ground source and solar thermal with seasonal thermal storage is cheaper, quieter, and more energy efficient in some areas, and doesn't contribute to heat islanding the way air source does, but that is the sort of thing that's much easier to do with new developments and, of course, doesn't apply to cars.

I really don’t understand why people are willing to give up so much at a higher price, other than we have all been brained washed that the air will be unbreathable in 20 to 30 years if we don’t cut CO2 emission. I don’t buy into that hype. The models being used can’t predict historical climate temperatures. Why would I trust something to predict the future? ICE is still more convenient and if the money being invested into battery technology and reducing aerodynamic friction were put into ICE cars there might be a big improvement in fuel efficiency.
