  • In this video I finish assembling the center wing section, mount it to the fuselage and mount the boom for the Fresh F3-RES 2M Competition Glider. The Fresh is a 2 meter sailplane designed for the RES or Rudder, Elevator, Spoiler spec. I bought it to compete in 2 meter TD (Thermal Duration) events. It is a highly regarded F3-RES model that flies excellently and builds comparatively quickly. The big benefits of this model are its carbon tubular spars and carbon tailboom for lighter weight, and lower fuselage drag. The Fresh combines a very good glide angle with excellent thermal performance and good-natured handling. It costs $175.56 and is sold through HyperFlight (link below).
The RES competition spec is designed to keep the gliders in this class inexpensive and attractive to both beginners and experienced pilots. The kits must be mostly wood construction and controls are limited to rudder, elevator, and spoilers. This means that the planes can be flown without the need for an advanced programmable radio. The RES class is very popular in Europe and hopefully, it will catch on in the US as well.

I'm trying to get back into building these. This is several notches above what I did years ago, including the RC part. Fascinating and very helpful videos, thank you much for the detailed descriptions.

I realise you shot this build a while ago but I’m just finishing my Fresh. A couple of points on the wing bolts: There is nothing positively locating the wing on the fuselage and all the load from the nylon screws is on the plywood plates on top of the wing, clamping the bottom sheeting down onto the fuselage. (The top sheeting should go over the top of the plates btw, not be cut round them as you did.). So you can drill slightly oversize through the balsa in the centre rib and give yourself some adjustability. I think I might bond in a couple of short lengths of aluminium tube in the centre rib for the bolts to pass through. I’m guessing that in a cartwheel landing the wingbolts will shear and the wing come off before anything else breaks.

Hi CJ - any idea when you'll do a build tutorial on the outer wing and tip construction ?

Sorry for the delay. I've got several projects going at the same time. I will have a video for the outer wings in the next 5-10 days. I'm hoping to race RC cars this weekend and am trying to finish a kit. I was disabled in a motorcycle accident caused by a drunk driver. As a result, there are days when I am in so much pain that I can't work on my projects.

My RC Channel thanks CJ. Great tips and helpful coaching on this build. I just took delivery today and appreciate the time yo take to explain the process. Hope the pain stays at bay for the weekend.

@@scottishslopesoaring I am going to set the car kit aside for now. I've got one ready to go so I can let the other slide till the following weekend. I'll start back into finishing off the fuselage and get going on the outer wing sections tomorrow... hopefully it will be a good day. I understand that you and others want to get in the air as soon as possible. I'll try to have another video done by Sunday. I did the first maiden flights of the Chrysalis-Lite RES 2m day before yesterday. Even though it was only a few hand launches in a flat field, it felt great to get some stick time. Thanks for watching and for being a subscriber.
      Regards,
      CJ
