      +Connor Turton I think he was supposing the idea that armour takes months to make. Clearly he's never actually seen how much most armour is just flat surfaces bolted together and occasionally beaten into a curve. Arming hundreds of men takes months yes, but a half dozen will only take a couple weeks.

      +Laurence Martin Well it depends on what kind of armour we're talking about.
      An ordinary soldier in the later part of the history of metal armour would be wearing munition armour: Mass-produced and of reasonable quality.
      Making a full, custom plate harness for a knight is something else entirely, and could take a good smith quite a while, but with marked improvements in comfort and mobility, if not necessarily in protection (it'll probably all be made from similar steel).
      I can imagine a master smith being paid well to make custom harnesses for wealthy customers, with a large group of apprentices under him making munition armour for the common soldier.

    The empire and high elves have good heavy calvary, the wood and dark elves have good light cavalry, but the Bretonnians have good SHOCK cavalry. Their job is to melt enemy morale in one or two hits, not grind them out, so against things like beastman and skaven, bretonnia just annihilates armies.

      There has been a few balance changes. And I think the pegasus knights are really strong if you use them correctly, but if you can't spend a lot of micro on them, they often get swamped behind enemy lines without support.

  • @Bubba_Dub

    I feel like Bretonnia's peasant bowmen should be the only faction with skirmishers who should be able to utilizes stakes because of their weak infantry. The empire's infantry is more than capable of handling themselves, holding a line, and protecting their skirmishers. A Bretonnian player on the other hand, is going to be more heavily occupied with the micro of all of their cavalry units running everywhere at once. The stakes would at least give the Bretonnian player a little peace-of-mind over the security of their bowmen from frontal assaults of enemies cavalry charges, while still having to worry about how long their men-at-arms will hold off superior infantry. Since the peasant bowmen are "fair/capable" skirmishers and nothing extraordinary; I feel that the stakes will grant the little edge that the peasant bowmen need that is both fair and balanced.

    I am not sure that the Total War guys will focus too much on keeping races balanced. Not beyond the tabletop system at least.
    They focused more on how powerful units were realistically in Rome Total War rather than obsessing overly on keeping it balanced.
    I mean, a Gaul army would always be at an disadvantage against the roman army. Requiring players to think steps ahead.
    That was the great thing about that game. It wasn't fair. Meaning that you had to be smart to win with the less developed factions.

      Arch Warhammer Yeah, but Bretonnia hasn't been updated in forever. They're only crap because of the codex creep. I wouldn't be surprised if they decided to update it, that they'd make life a little less bleak for the peasants too.
      Being cavalry centric, the big thing the Brettonians would have is a cavalry unit for every situation. Knight's Errant and Knights of the Realm for the numbers game, Questing Knights for... I guess Questing... maybe a unit that tires slowly and being good at running down and chasing enemy units about, and/or perhaps some sort of zone capturing bonus. Grail Knights for anti-elite and punching holes. Mounted Yeomen for scouting, quick strikes, anti-skirmisher, and lighting fast cycle attacks. The Bretonnians want to gain cavalry superiority by quickly slaughtering /all/ the enemy cav /away/ from the enemy infantry support and then launching concentrated attacks on vulnerable enemy units. They'd also have prefer the Alexandrian school of strategy, where the infantry merely holds off the bulk of the enemy forces while their general runs straight for the enemy commander. Most horde style armies get pretty panicky when their big boss dies.

    Instead of an upgrade to Men at Arms, couldn't the Grail* Reliquary work similarly to the Great Cross in Medieval 2? Basically it becomes a single, comparatively vulnerable unit that offers big morale buffs around allied units and can, if necessary, drop its item to defend it, albeit not particularly well.

    • @Koplod
      @Koplod 8 років тому

      +TemplarX2 In the snuff yes, in the table top no - Bretonnia are underpowered in Warhammer itself. If we based it on lore, Bretonnian knights would most certainly hold their own against Imperial knights and even defeat them, but in a straight up fight with the Empire (who would be using all their advanced weaponry and artillery) the Bretonnians would get completely fucking decimated. I say this with a heavy heart as the Bretonnians are my favourite race in the Warhammer universe.

  • @mandulis3410
    @mandulis3410 8 років тому +5

    What I don't understand: How are the bretonians able to use hit and run: as you mentioned in the beginning The blessing takes of if the unit flees. So the unit would fluffwise avoid to flee or even disengage ( cause this can be seen as a form of fleeing).

    • @ArcturusV
      @ArcturusV 8 років тому +7

      Ideally in the fluff, what would happen in a Bretonnian Army Skirmish/Battle:
      The enemy would mass up as they do. Consider Bretonnia's major enemies are Orcs, Vampires, Beastmen, and Skavens, all "Big Blobby" armies. They don't really fight the Empire all that often to deal with formal ranked formations. Nor do they fight Kislev's hit and run horseback skirmishers, or all that often fight Chaos and Lizardmen and it's heavy Grindfest and attrition. When considering Fluff Tactics and how an army is "Supposed" to fight, you always have to consider who their real enemies are.
      In the case of Orcs, Beastmen, and Skavens you typically have very low Leadership enemies for the most part. Orc Boyz/Goblins are terrible at Combat Resolution, meaning once they take a charge, it's very likely that Orcs will break and flee, leaving the bretonnians in the area to consolidate again. Granted in tabletop this tends not to happen due to clunk with the Rules, and you just charge again, picking your mark. But in Fluff they'd wheel about to consolidate with the Men at Arms and Longbowmen, to set up another crushing charge... unless they were like Knights Errant and thus so full of Glory Seeking that they'd just charge the fleeing orcs can run them down. The same applies for Skaven, the danger with Skaven is that they WANT you to bog down on their rank and file slaves and such. But as long as you can inflict terrible enough casualties the enemy breaks, then you won't get bogged down, swarmed, and taken down.
      In the case of Undead this usually means the knights will be picking off the more mobile units on their list. The various beasties that can run around. The rank and file Zombie and Skeleton blocks are just going to get hammered with a ton of arrows from the Peasants. Since the Knights are more likely to be engaging mobile elements they are similarly unlikely to get bogged down in a protracted combat, giving them the ability to punch, scatter/slay an enemy, and regroup again. You wouldn't be going after the undead as the undead are immune to psychology, and thus won't break. Well, unless the undead unit is weak enough that you feel confident in sweeping them completely with that initial charge and maybe a short clash afterwards.
      Now the enemies that they don't normally face... that's where Lore wise the Bretonnian tactics tend to fail. Then again... it's enemies they don't normally face. Chaos Warriors are unlikely to break, and able to take the charge unless weakened significantly at first they'll grind it out, because that's what they do. And Bretonnians aren't exactly the best at grinding it out. Not against super heavy elite infantry blocks like Chaos Warriors, or Saurus, etc.
      But against the enemies that they do face normally? They can hit and run quite well. Just keep in mind lore wise they're not running themselves. What they are doing is the Fantasy equivalent of "Tank Shock", hitting something so hard, so fast, that it scatters. And that scattering gives them time to regroup after the initial clash, pick their target, and do it again. Considering the enemies that they normally fight (Orks, Beastmen, Undead, Skaven), they can't "Grind it out" like Chaos, Lizardmen, The Empire, etc. It's feeding into the sort of fighting that those forces want and excel at, pinning you down to where the raw numbers game matters, either in terms of fighting against things like genetically bred super soldier Incan Dinosaurs with more years of military service than your Kingdom has even existed and hides so tough that they can turn aside sword strikes, or just facing the Skaven nightmare of "For every 1 I kill, 3 more take its place!", or Undead Hordes that are just replenishing bodies faster than you can grind through... or heck just the simple fact that Orc Boyz (Feral and Not), are just really, really good at Melee and that's where they want to keep you so they can crump you.
      The Empire doesn't hit and run with its forces because while yes, they do face some of the same enemies (Orcs and Vampires), they also don't face others (Skaven) and some are more of a "nuisance" than a proper army they face regularly (Beastmen). But more inparticular it's Norscan Raiders and Chaos Warriors that define their tactics. Enemies that don't break right away, and you do have to grind it out against them. Thus why they have a far more static army, with knights trained less to be Linebreakers as it were, and more to be meat grinders. Carroburg Greatswords that never turn their back to the enemy, under any circumstance, and of course the massive gunlines and Halbred/Spear formations.
      It's just interesting to think about. The Empire is defensive, no question about it. Their entire army and tactica is based on being under siege effectively. That's just how they roll, and they gear their units accordingly and drill them as such.
      Bretonnia however is not a defensive army. When they fight wars they don't fight from Walls and Towers, fortified positions and wooden palisades and earthworks. They fight crusades and errantry wars. Their culture and faith gives them a sense of superiority (Then again if I can bounce cannonballs off my chest because I pray to a Lady who gives out magic kool-aid to the worthy... I might feel a bit smug too, particularly over those lesser Knights to the Northeast who CAN'T bounce cannonballs when they pray to a Guy with a Hammer...), and they subscribe to that adage "The best defense is a good offense", always keeping enemies off kilter and trying to respond to them.

      Omnibuses
      The Brunner omnibus (although you'll probably read it) (All around the world)
      The Witch Hunter omnibus, (Empire)
      The Sundering Omnibus (Elves),
      The Calard the Knight (of Knight Errant, Knight of the Realm, Questing Knight and Grail Knight) they are also combined in a single book (Bretonnia),
      The Tyrion & Teclis omnibus (Elves).
      The Ambassador Chronicles (Kislev/Empire)
      Novels
      Iron Company (The Empire),
      The Enemy Within (Empire/Chaos)
      Necromancer (Empire/Undead)
      The Red Duke (Bretonnia/Undead)
      There are other good fantasy books but I haven't finished reading them (like all the chronicles)
      However if you are watching the Slayer series (Gotrek and Felix), I would suggest stop reading the series after Vampire Slayer
      I hope that helps

      Especially considering how expensive it was for a knight to be fully equipped for war. The Destrier which most think of the warhorse of the knight were too expensive to for the average knight who would had to settle for lesser horses such as a Courser or Rouncey. If the Knight was particularly poor he would of had to go on foot

      They couldn't utilise the same type of warfare as the Romans as they did not have the industry or the population to make all the stuff or supply the troops. Also medieval armies were not professional. The peasantry were mostly levied militia men and the only real profesional soldiers were of a born caste (knights). The medieval society was entirely different to the Romans and so their armies could not be the same.

    +Arch Warhammer @ 8:51 onward - The Brettonians are nothing like the Byzantines aka The Eastern Roman Empire.. in Warhammer The Empire IS literally the Holy Roman Empire in look and architecture especially and the very religious sects. Byzantines were very very similar in troop composition as well to The Empire.. The backbone of the east romans armies was a Heavy Cavalry utilized by the byzantine army... The Cataphracts (a heavily armored soldier with an armored warhorse) which essentially is the knights of the reiksguard or just an Empire Knight even can pass as a Cataphract but none of the bretts.... , the Knights of The Realm in bretts are more like your typical French cavalier and the knights of british and French origin.. working for lords for housing food and to have a position in society, enforce their own military.. its totally british/frenc inspied and they have the same kind of system of land ownership and tax the shit out their peasants like the Brits and the French., also the Byzantines had access to gunpowder, which the Bretts have no use of.

    I have some suspect, that the Bretonnian Army will be strong in filed battles, but will lacking in siege, both defence and attack.
    That could be soften, if they add a foot knight units like in Medieval 2. But still I see Bretonnian at a disadvantages in sieges, compared to the Empire or Dwarves or Elves.
    If the knight simply dismount, than they would not the man power infantry units usually has and bretonnian knights have not really good armour on foot (calv get additional amour for being mounted).
    Bretonnian infantry is not particularly good and a unit of state troops of the empire probably would hack most of them to pieces (bihanded swords are even worst). Bretonnian range is nothing special either and the arty has no cannons and the cities of the empire for example have cannons on the walls/tower.
    Overall I think the Bretonnian army could use some addition, both in units and chars, since the armybook is pretty old.
    Maybe something like a grail monk? As a char? A hunting master (bowchar)? A additional paladin like char?
    Perhaps the foot knight units? Additional infantry? Maybe a unit of heavy crossbows/longbows, as a kind of guard unit for cities/castles?
    I share you thought on, hippo-griffon.
    Grail knights? i would think different: for Generals, i would assume that make quest is the way to get them the chance to drink form the grail, making them extreme powerful. The unit however I would make simply make them a limed unit of which either 1-2 exist (maybe correspond with the size of the empire?).

    • @Stoic_Zoomer
      @Stoic_Zoomer 9 років тому

      Si Wi for the Grail knights why don't you have a quest line with the general and his body guard in witch your general starts with questing knights as bodyguards and after he kills a lot powerful dudes or wins a bunch of battles he and his bodyguard become Grail knights? But that shouldn't be the only way to get them either so maybe some sort of quest line or maybe a upgrade system, like if after a unit get X amount of x.p. they become then next tier unit starting from knight errant and ending with Grail knight or maybe like what you said you can only have 2 or 3 of them witch is probably the most likely thing that's going to happen

    • @Nonsense010688

      Sir Dude Well in my vision of Wh TW (read here more if you want to: forums.totalwar.com/showthread.php/140687-My-Personal-vision-for-a-Warhammer-Total-War) there are no bodyguard units, but you do it like in the Tabletop and chose which unit a chars joins.
      Overall I do like your idea (upgrading units for exp, should be a thing anyway...) as well as the quest reward, but still I would say that this unit is so important for the Bretonian army (since what else does really hurt from them? Compare to let's say big daemons), I think excess should be reliable.

    The way knight ranks are is as follows: Knights Errant -> Knight of the Realm -> Questing Knight -> Grail Knight.
    Also of interest may be that in the old army book there were a ton of special characters (almost all knights, of course). They could have up to 75% of their army worth of points of those, even. Knights also had special magic items and a type of benefit called knightly virtues (the Questing knights' and Grail knights' specific benefits being two of those).
    Also of note is that commoners couldn't be more than 50% of the army whereas knights had to be at least 25% (up to 100%) of the army. That, and they had the most awesome warhorses, reputed to be of sturdy human breed bred with speedy elven steeds. Of course knights being knights there were rules to allow certain high-ranked knights to ride various beasties, from Wyverns to Dragons.
    Anyway, Bretonnia should have the most knights in an army (potentially), the best knights (their whole culture is based around 'em), and a lot of heroes.

    GW certainly snobbs at the Men-at-Arms. I mean, historically they were more or less professional soldiers (albeit in the lower levels of the hierarchy). Even in the model representation of them, do they display reasonable equipment (Kettle helmets, pole arms, shields looking to be of decent quality etc.)
    Anyways, I suspect that CA will take some creative liberties and diversify units, to the point where you have like 3 or 4 types of men-at-arms (or faction substitute) in different roles. Simply because tabletop only allow so many models (because costs, practicality and what not).
    Total war is different, I geniunly hope that it has the depth enough to have each and all factions have spearmen, various melee troops, polearm equiped troops and so on to properly represent different types of roles. Whereas it is rationalized away in table top, it pose a lesser problem for a video game.

    • @Oddtom121
      @Oddtom121 9 років тому

      I agree, Men at Arms can actually be a pretty solid unit, they're as well equipped as Imperial soldiers when it comes to armour and weaponry, the voulges they carry are pretty nasty and like you said, their shields are also very effective, on the tabletop all shields are the same but in a total war game I can easily imagine them offering more protection than the ones used by orcs or Imperial swordsmen. The lore talks about them forming huge, Roman style shield walls to hold the enemy down whilst the knights countercharge them, since despite what a lot of sources say, the main bulk of a Bretonnian army will be made up of peasant soldiers. They're very easy to underestimate too, and you can catch a lot of foes off guard by supporting them with magic.
