Cloud leopard is like the cat version of a parrot. They are very chatty and also playful. I can also relate about not many people knowing Narwhal. When I was in grade school the teacher asked us our favorite animals that lives in the water and mine was Narwhal because they are like unicorns of the sea. My classmates didn't believe they existed and the teacher has to pull up a picture of a Narwhal for the class.
I had the opposite experience. When I was in 4th grade (8-9 years old) somehow narwhals were brought up in class. Everyone in the class knew they were real but my teacher was fully convinced they weren’t, even after looking them up. He was our science teacher, that was literally during the unit on niches in nature
I…. How do people not know what a narwhal is? Maybe it’s just because I live in Canada (though near the us border) and watched a ton of discovery kids growing up.
The segment on the cookie cutter shark hit a lot deeper than I expected. As a kid growing up, I watched this show called "Animal Planet's The Most Extreme," and the CC shark made the number one spot on the episode about "Most Extreme Bites [sic]." At the time, however, there was no footage or even any pictures of the shark due to how elusive it was. Now, 20 years later, we have a pretty good idea of what it looks like and in the past decade there have actually been encounters with them. This is crazy. This man is carrying the Most Extreme torch very professionally. Animals I would add to part 2: 1) The hummindbird moth. These are actual moths that mimic hummingbirds for some reason. They use their proboscis like the hummingbird's beak to drink nectar from flowers, and they even "hover" like hummingbirds too. They can actually do it for longer since they don't get tired like hummingbirds, so it's kinda like when someone copies the answers on your homework and gets the higher grade. I saw one in Texas six years ago. 2) The vampire moth. This one can be interchangeable with the previous entry. Most people think moths are harmless and don't bite, but this one does, and it's definitely cooler-looking than a mosquito. 3) The basking shark. It's one of three major kinds of filter-feeding sharks known for its gaping mouth and harmlessness to humans. It's not harmless to your mental health, though. They have a very peculiar look, like they've been designed by Vincent Van Goh. 4) The mega mouth shark. Like the basking shark, it's a filter feeder, but instead of keeping its mouth open, it looks like it's permanently not impressed. Rarely seen by people, probably because we aren't impressive enough. 5) The grasshopper mouse. This mouse, despite its name and size, also hunts, murders, and eats tarantulas, giant centipedes, and scorpions. It also howls at night like a wolf. Don't take my word for it. Look up the National Geographic video. I couldn't believe it either. Also, in captivity, they've been known to kill and eat other mice.
@rsmania01 I know! I wish I could share photos because I got a few of them before people started wondering what we were staring at, and little guy was like "nope" and went inside. If you are ever in Baton Rouge lousiana, go check out their zoo! They just built all the animals BEAUTIFUL enclosures, and the pygmy is now their star attraction, lol.
Oh man I love maned wolves. They're so goofy looking. Narwhals are so cute too! Pom Poko was my introduction to the tanuki and yeah they're like that one AC/DC Big Balls song.
8:35 reminds me of a Latin American mythological creature called the Ahuizotl, specifically since it was known to hang around rivers and imitates the sounds of a baby or a person in distress. The Ahuizotl was described as a sort of big cat or canine with a hand at the end of its tail to drag people into the water and drown them. This little guy is a lot cuter and still sounds kinda like a baby
My friend is a fire fighter and he had to capture and release a Maned wolf that got lost in the city hall's parking lot, they are deceptively big and strong, took them a while to put it in a cage for transport.
At the zoo Maned wolf: Hi Sweetie! (He does a tappy-paw dance) Clouded leopard: Hi Beautiful! (She decides to liquid herself out of her box) Hippo: Hey Mahali! (He looks up, realizes I’m not Dave, goes back to sleep)

Yep! I knew of all of them, as well. I credit the wonderful zoos in the San Francisco Bay Area, David Attenborough, and Mutual of Omaha’s Wild Kingdom.
@@dix0n778 It's on the smaller side for a zoo in a major city, but it's a nice zoo none the less. They also have giant pandas, which I believe only five zoos in the states have!
If raccoon dogs are most closely related to foxes, it honestly makes a lot more sense now why both these animals shared a lot of similar abilities in Japanese folklore despite them commonly being depicted as rivals to one another 😂
You have no idea how happy I was as a malagasy to hear talk about the Fossa. The clouded leopard has me mesmerized 🧐🧐 The Rock Hyrax is common in Jerusalem, wherever there is bare mountain, y'know, rocky terrain. They scatter and disappear at the slightest noise, so difficult to photograph. They have a pretty cute and cool way of maneuvering and running. I like watching them.
For some reason the rock hyrax looks to me like a vampire version of the pika, a small mammal that's common in the mountains in Western Canada and U.S.A. They almost look like big mice but are more closely related to rabbits. I think they remind me of the rock hyrax because of how round they are, and the way they bounce over and between rocks. Pikas have bigger ears and no tusks though.
We have them over in South Africa too. You usually smell a colony before you see them. They were especially prevalent around the town where I'm from. Oh and we call them dassie. Da/see.
I believe you about the Jerusalem location. A couple of years ago I studied religion in the Middle East and was surprised hyraces were mentioned in Leviticus (the Bible) as not being kosher because while they did chew their cud, they lacked a split hoof, which made me really confused because their feet are literally the most split hoof you'll get: they look exactly like elephant feet.
Maned wolves have been my favorite animal ever since like fifth grade, I'm so glad to see you talk about them! I adore clouded leopards too. I knew most of these animals' existed but never knew as much about them as you said.
By some hilarious coincidence, just about a month or so ago I made someone's Sonic OC into an action figure, and it was a maned wolf. The first time I ever made an anthropomorphic cartoon maned wolf OC and then you bring up the fact that it's one of nature's most obscure animals
Thank you for not only making the Narwhal Song reference, but having that smirk as you did so, that has made my day xD (Also, I saw what you did there with the Tanuki and guidelines comment, well played, Sir!)
I'll take the respect for knowing all these cool animals existed, I personally thank Zoo Tycoon 2 for introducing me to pygmy hippos as a kid, who knew that the murderous water horse has a smaller but cuter relative! Also, I can't with that clip of the baby pygmy hippo trying to nom that person's boot, it's too adorable.

When I was like 5 or 6-ish my family went to a wildlife museum chock full of taxidermized animals and this one huge room had all kinds of goats and things and one of the various heads on the wall that my poor eyes almost immediately locked onto was THAT THING. It messed me up SO MUCH because in my young mind I hated to think that that thing was real. But knowing its name has brought the child in me some peace I never knew I needed lmao.

Also thanks for clarifying big cats vs small cats, roar vs purr, it's something I've been curious about since, well forever really but haven't been able to focus on it enough to find out before I forget again
Maned wolves are really cool. They're solitary, and not that good at hunting, so they eat mostly fruit. They're chill and not too aggressive, so it's a lot safer to approach them than most other wild canids. The name we locals gave them is Aguará Guazú, which means "big fox" in guarani.
Ive always considered my knowledge on animals much higher than most, but i love that i can still learn more. You are a great teacher and i enjoy still learning of new things. I at least knew over half of these, but for those you still brought unique knowledge about them forward. Love it!
I also want to add that Tony Tony Chopper from One Piece is a character who often gets mistaken for a raccoon dog, even though he is a reindeer. It's even a running gag in the show. I very much expected Chopper to be one of your points to what references we'd have for raccoon dogs.

I…. How do people not know what a narwhal is? Maybe it’s just because I live in Canada (though near the us border) and watched a ton of discovery kids growing up.
I thought you were going to say that your teacher didn't believe you. 😂
3:08 "two clowns with marital issues" 🤣
The segment on the cookie cutter shark hit a lot deeper than I expected. As a kid growing up, I watched this show called "Animal Planet's The Most Extreme," and the CC shark made the number one spot on the episode about "Most Extreme Bites [sic]." At the time, however, there was no footage or even any pictures of the shark due to how elusive it was. Now, 20 years later, we have a pretty good idea of what it looks like and in the past decade there have actually been encounters with them. This is crazy. This man is carrying the Most Extreme torch very professionally.
Animals I would add to part 2:
1) The hummindbird moth.
There’s also the death’s head hawkmoth, which utters a loud chirp when irritated. They’re named after a skull shaped marking on their thorax.
If grasshopper mice were much bigger, wolverines would have serious competition!
I'm glad to see someone else remembers #5
Thanks! Am so gonna look these up
OMG the most extreme was the shit back in the day lol
The clouded leopard... literally a real life Tigger from Winnie the Pooh.
I saw a pair of them at a zoo. Guess the title? Yep, it was indeed crocodiles of the world.
And like Tigger it also expert on jumping
But are their tops made of rubber and are their bottoms made up of springs?! I think not! :=). Seriously clouded leopards are so cool :=)
It’s sssooooooo cuteeeee 💕💕💕💕💕

First time I even heard of a pygmy hippo was at the zoo. The zoo was pretty much empty so he was hanging out right next to the gate. Super cute
You lucky Mitsuki!
I only heard of it because of that one time I image searched the word "pygmy" for different animals.
The results? A high dosage of serotonine.
And now everyone loves Pygmy Hippos, thanks to Moo Deng XD
Man, the ancient humans were TERRIBLE at accurate illustrations of the animal kingdom...
Blud has an evil laugh
I looked up the Ahuizotl and DEAR GOD I LOVE IT.
My friend is a fire fighter and he had to capture and release a Maned wolf that got lost in the city hall's parking lot, they are deceptively big and strong, took them a while to put it in a cage for transport.

You should definitely do a video like this again. There are so many weird and underappreciated animals.
I not only recognized all 10, but I've actually seen most of them in person! Zoo Atlanta, which I grew up visiting, has bush dogs, fossas, clouded leopards, and raccoon dogs! I always felt lucky to see so many animals that a lot of people have never even heard of.

If raccoon dogs are most closely related to foxes, it honestly makes a lot more sense now why both these animals shared a lot of similar abilities in Japanese folklore despite them commonly being depicted as rivals to one another 😂
Yeah, no, I really don't think the ancient japanese had any way to know the tanuki are biologically closely related to foxes.

You have no idea how happy I was as a malagasy to hear talk about the Fossa. As much as they are the Lemurs natural predator they are mildly adorable and have the same mentality as your average malagasy which is "please mind your damn business" and "I could turn this into a problem for both of our mental healths I won't"

To those curious, the Bakedanuki from Japanese folklore literally have testicle magic. Like, that's their brand. They can fly with it, shapeshift them into various objects and people, etc.
And they're huge. Like, HUGE huge.

Yeah and given Animal Crossing’s Tom Nook is actually a tanuki it just really changes one’s perception of him 😂 the artwork of folklore tanuki testicles is bonkers
0:36 Fun Fact: Probably the reason why tigers are the most searched animal in Mexico is not necessarily because of the animal itself, but due to a Football (⚽) team from the State of Nuevo Leon, named "Tigres" which has gotten relatively popular in the last few years.
And don’t forget the Kings of the Narco Corrido, Los Tigres del Norte!
I agree, these lists are usually nonsense. Fewer people look up animals like horses becouse everybody knows what a horse is. While other animals get more hits due to some incident, like the berlin lion. Or due to being pests and people looking up ways to get rid of them.

The Rock Hyrax is common in Jerusalem, wherever there is bare mountain, y'know, rocky terrain.
The kingdom of heaven is their home
Rock hyrax / Dassie always look pissed off 🤣

Maned wolves are really cool. They're solitary, and not that good at hunting, so they eat mostly fruit. They're chill and not too aggressive, so it's a lot safer to approach them than most other wild canids.
