From 2008 to 2014 graffiti was more or less legal in Detroit. The city was going bankrupt and the police were so underfunded they would not respond to anything other than violent crimes. Mike Duggan, Before he was elected Mayor of Detroit in 2013, was the Wayne County Prosecuter. In the early 2000s, he set out on a very public campaign to arrest the graffiti writer Turdl, who was the undisputed King of Detroit graffiti from 2001-2004. He never caught Turdl, but arrested Coupe who was visiting from out of town to paint. When Mike Duggan became mayor, he made it his mission to eradicate graffiti and started giving out malicious destruction of property felonies for all graffiti arrests. He also started giving property owners large fines for having graffiti on their property. If you failed to buff the graffiti on your building withtin 2 weeks, the city would do it and charge the owner. Detroit saw a resurgence during the 2020 lockdown where you saw writers like GASM (RIP), the biggest bomber in Detroit Graffiti history, come out of retirement and crush the city one last time before he tragically passed away. The graffiti scene in Detroit now is dead. Any visible streetside graffiti on main roads is buffed within a week. Occaisonly you will see a new writer pop up and hit a few spots then either get demotivated by the buff or charged with a couple of felonies and quit. Many locals (Mainly oldheads and southwest Detroit writers) have blamed out of town west coast writers such as Revok (who wrote "Chaos" in Detroit), Hael, Begr Trav for bringing so much heat to the city. The west coast writers were labeled Hipsters by many locals mainly because they had photographers with them, had Montana can sponsers, and did legal art. While they did crush the city, they often painted with writers such as Elmer, Gasm, Stori, and Tead (RIP). Elmer and Gasm also brought in many out of towners and such as 2BUCK (RIP) Aires, Neitz who all crushed the city and contributed to the heat.
Fuck I love your professional approach to interviewing and documenting. Helps the scene immensely. I can watch this in hospital and not be misjudged as a tattooed drug seeking vandal.
