This Amazon VPC tutorial will give an overview of AWS VPC along with demo on how to create a custom VPC. Amazon Virtual Private Cloud (VPC) is a commercial cloud computing service that provides users a virtual private cloud, by provisioning a logically isolated section of Amazon Web Services (AWS) Cloud. Enterprise customers are able to access the Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (EC2) over an IPsec based virtual private network. Unlike traditional EC2 instances which are allocated internal and external IP numbers by Amazon, the customer can assign IP numbers of their choosing from one or more subnets. By giving the user the option of selecting which AWS resources are public facing and which are not, VPC provides much more granular control over security.

Thank you. Again, excellent discussion. Need to follow your directions explicitly. I am not a web admin. I do not need the course. This is a attempt at using AWS as an alternative to traditional hosting. An immense challenge. The AWS documentation is unreadable and hugely bloated with too many hyperlinks. Worse than reading Microsoft documentation.
The next lesson should be more attention to subnet design. Then load balancing. Finally, how to connect to private subnet databases which is nearly impossible and highly arcane. Almost not worth the effort.
But as you say, you need to sign up for the course.

Why 32 as netmask?
This is the best video tutorial I have seen on AWS. Excellent work. I have a question regarding subnets: In this video course, you demonstrate a scenario where you have a public subnet for your web server, and a private subnet for your database. After watching this video I created a VPC just like that. Next, I went to RDS and attempted to add an MS SQL Database to the VPC, but I got a warning telling me that I need to assign a group of subnets that span at least 2 Availability Zones. So does this mean I actually need TWO private subnets in my VPC to be able to add an MS SQL Server RDS instance?

Great tutorial. One question. at 28:49 Do we put NAT in private or public subnet? I thought we put it in private subnet not public.
NAT needs to be placed in public subnet so it can access internet using internet gateway of public subnet and then private subnet needs to have NAT in its routing table so it can access internet through NAT.

if I create an instance in a region (e.g. Singapore) which has 3 AZs (1a,1b,1c) . Does that mean that if 1a down, the instance will automatically go to either 1b or 1c without creating load balancer?

Awesome tutorial. I have a simple question -- when spanning the subnets across different availability zones, don't we want multiple copies of the public-private subnet combo in different availability zones? For instance, in the video, it shows the public subnet on one availability zone, while the private in another. But if the availability zone with the public subnet fails, availability will still be affected because there isn't a public subnet in another availability zone. So should we create the same public subnet (along with corresponding private) in each availability zone instead of public in one availability zone and private in another?
No. The only difference between the private and public subnet is that the instances in public subnet gets public IP address. Whereas, the instance in private subnet don't get public address. A subnet is just a subject. AWS is using different terminology here because they have different purpose. U can easily make private subject a public subnet by allowing instance to receive public address and by routing 0.0.0.0/0 to igw instead of Nat gateway. U can also associate both private and public subnet to route table which contains 0.0.0.0/0 to igw. This can make your private subnet same as public subnet. 🙂
The best practice is to called them something else besides private and public.
In 24:00 you say it’s a good practice to leave main/default route table in its original state and create custom one for network traffic routes associated with VPC. Next in 32:40 you alter main/default route table adding route pointing to NAT gateway. Why not another custom route table?
