I suspect that she actually loved Credence more than just a friend and when he most likely dies in the next fantastic beasts she blames his death on the Dumbledores. Her loss mixed with blaming them and then her madness stuck as a snake I bet she thought that by trying to help Voldemort it might give her revenge on the Dumbledores combined with loosing her humanity stuck in the snakes mind

When under Imperio, one's "Moral Compass" gets totally dodged & bypassed... getting permanently stuck in a Animal Body with a Animal Brain could conceivably have a comparable effect. The higher I.Q. & Cognitive parts of Human Nagini wouldn't be able to fit or operate in a Snake Brain so thus could be permanently lost. It's hard to tell if Human Nagini & Perma-Snake Nagini can even be regarded as the same entity...

I think it was a little bit of both. First it reminds me of Remus Lupin, in his werewolf form he’s pure beast “willing to kill his best friend…” unable to control his actions but, if I remember right, he still knew/remember what he done in that form.
Nagini unfortunately remained in beast mode, forever thinking like a snake which made it easier for Voldemort, a parsaltongue, to befriend her which led to her going dark

I'm going to throw my hat in the ring. I don't think she was ever evil. If she turned into a snake and not changing back to human my theory is her brain probably switched to only reptile brain which is very hunter instinct. It's more of a snake brain mixed with Tommy's tongue that made her what she was at the end

I don't think Nagini is evil, instead I think she doesn't have a choice.
Here's why I say this. Remember in the second book/movie right before Harry found out he was a parseltongue? When Malfoy summoned the Cobra he told the snake not to attack Justin Finch-Fletchley. The snake obeyed, despite its clear indication that it was ready to strike Justin.
So, I think having parseltounge gives the person the ability to not only speak to snakes, but to control them to a degree.

The other horcruxes have an evil aura about them that effects the mood and thoughts of anyone who handles it for any extended amountof time. Harry is the only one who does not and the only one that did not spend a significant amount of time in voldemort's possession immediately before and after the horcrux charm. When a maledictus is stuck as their animal form they loose their ability to think as a human, which most likely means they also loose all memory they had as a human as they are now stuck as a beast. Nagini becoming evil is most likely due to that fact that her snake mind is following the orders of someone who can talk to her. Also due to the fact that her lifespan isn't shortened, much like an animagus, Voldemort probably saw it as an advantage as he could keep her around without worrying about her dying of old age

A maledictus gradually loses the ability to think like a human - that's why they become trapped as a beast. It is the human mind which controls the transformation, from person to beast and back to person. There comes a point where the human mind has slipped away so much that all there is left is a beast; lacking the capacity or even memory of how to change back. When this happened to Nagini, the whisper of the woman was trapped for short while before she disappeared altogether.
Nagini the woman was effectively dead by the time Voldemort came along. The beast retained vestiges of the woman such as intelligence higher than other snakes, and a name, but that's all the dark wizard interacted with. A serpent. Nagini, and the beast with the same name, were two different beings.

I disagree with you. Having a friendly relationship with an evil person, doesn't have to turn you into evil yourself. Just like Buffy and Spike, wrong franchise I know but still an example. No I think it had two stages: 1.Losing the love of her life Aurelius. The only one she could have called a friend until his condition killed him. 2.Once the curse took over. She was forced to live possibly 5 or 6 decades without someone to talk with and lost any shade of humanity within her until she met Voldemort. That is horrible and probably drove her mad to the point when she said to herself- "Why should I be good? What good gave to me? Screw everything and everyone." And once she met him she regained purpose in life, even if it's a life as a Snake. He must have promised her that he will revert her back to human once they win. So if he did I think she felt obligated which donated to her being evil.

I've been in iso for a few months since my mum became immunocomprimised, i can still see people, and iso is still driving me crazy, you want to be company with anyone. And I've just been like that for a few months. Imagine what it's like for DECADES. You're sort of assuming his argument is incorrect based on a premise he never states. I don't think the argument here is that Nagini became evil because she had a relationship with Voldemort, but instead because of the content of that relationship. I think your point is actually part of his argument. Nagini's isolation coupled with the terrible acts and the terrible thoughts and opinions Voldemort likely shared with her, would have made Nagini evil over the years. A person or an animal becoming a Horcrux will end up living forever if not killed. Voldemort persuaded Nagini to become Horcrux and in the meantime gain some time to find a way to revert the curse. Nagini agreed. He followed Voldemort for various reasons: she had years to communicate with someone, she was flattered by the possibility to live forever as a Horcrux and she was persuaded by a super powerful dark Lord that her curse would revert. In addition to all this, Voldemort shared with her the secret that he at least made one Horcrux, her. This enhanced her persuasion as it includes some sort of emotion by him.

Even the snake in the zoo (SS/PS) could “talk” to Harry, but we didn’t even think to call it “good” or “evil”. Like any pet, Nagini was happy to do the bidding of her master in order to please him and gain acceptance and approval. Voldemort was indeed a psychopath and sociopath-evil. In my own opinion, doesn’t have to be the fact, I think she just became a cold-hearted woman and gave up the idea of ever finding a cure for the maldictious (sorry I spelled it wrong). Being heartbroken and pretty much living in a cruel environment, Nagini just turned away from humanity and shot-down the idea of love ever again.
Voldemort- I’m going to call him V for this comment- to her she would feel envious for not being able to feel love. Nagini couldn’t stand it nor ever wants to find one. I guess V gives her respect and loyalty in the Wizarding World. Whatever that can make her useful as a snake, V gave her the opportunity of not being anything but worthless or weak. She has been looking out for herself, but V became someone she can live for: protecting his soul and never be looked as anything worthless or a show of entertaining as a pet.

I don't think she ever really became evil, because it's quite well understood that if animagi stay too long in their animal forms they actually lose some of their human cognitive abilities, and even more so for maledictus who are permanently stuck in that animal form and lose their 'human' self. So if we were to assume she met voldemort when she was already a snake all the time... then that just means a snake being told what to do (in a language they understand) by their owner. More of an unfortunate circumstance to me.

I've imagined lately that there was some reason for her to want to protect Riddle at first, and by the time she realized just how evil he was, it was too late. Perhaps her transformations into a snake specifically came from being a descendent of Salazar Slytherin, and she saw Riddle as family, and thus someone to protect and watch over. Eventually, it becomes an abusive relationship from which she can't bring herself to leave, because she's too tightly tied to Voldemort through the fragment of her soul trapped in her body. Slowly, the connection drives her completely mad, the woman's personality retreating behind the instincts of the snake in order to protect what remains of her consciousness from the horrible things she's forced to do.

Like Helena he tricked everyone. And because he was pretty much only one who could talk to her sealing her fate . Placing a horcrux in her. She felt angry where he pulled at her memories of being a sideshow attraction. And telling her he understands being mistreated.

Imagine if she would have met Harry instead, a young boy, resembling Credence. I wonder if she would have remembered her human thoughts and feelings, that is fascinating to think, what do you guys think? Could she have been saved?

i do agree with your theory. nagini most likely was evil before meeting voldemort because she didn’t get along with regular people, plus she went to isolate herself so she was probably mad at the world, right?

a mixture of revenge (on Mr Arkansas through the cage we saw ) being desperate and opportunist when Voldemort came by . she escaped with credence so stayed with him .
She can't cope with Voldemort being dead so horcrux vessel fits for contribution , question does horcrux get damaged if she got magically ill ?

At first I was agreeing with the comments about Nagini losing her human thoughts and has snake brain and can't really control attacking people. However in that case why wouldn't she have attacked Voldemort in the woods? Snakes attack anything they feel threatened by and anything that is food. And if it's because of his parseltongue controlling her then why wouldn't Harry be able to control the snake trying to attack him in the chamber of secrets? So I definitely feel like there was some kind of convincing that happened and maybe Nagini had more cognitive ability than we think

I was hoping Fantastic Beasts 2-5 would answer the question over time, but unfortunately, they half-assed the second one, quarter-assed the third (without even putting her in it), and we're not likely to get four and five.

Calling Nagini a pet seems wrong to me. People like their pets, Voldemort is not able to feel love so she is not really his pet. She is just a vesseI. I think she is more likely to be his slave to him.

Just a thought, in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, if Hermione and Ron new that Nagini was a maladiscus and used to be a women, would they have been less likely to have tried to kill her. Just like any reptile, they tend to only attack if they feel threatened.

Nagini probably became bitter about things overtime, many due to her sad affliction. Not that that's the only reason, but her bitterness probably made it easier for her worldview and opinions to change. Plus, Voldemort was her first friend in, what, decades?

  • @dnbattley

I don't think she became "evil" so much as she lost all sense of human morality. As initially neither an obvious source of food nor a threat to her, Voldemort will initially have been of no interest except for an ability to help her with her hunting via a direct form of communication she could immediately understand. After a long period of successful hunting made easier with his assistance, she will have naturally formed a trust/bond with him more akin to a wolf pack, and as he became stronger and more dominant in the relationship she will have continued to value Voldemort's ability to find her fresh and even higher quality meals (i.e. a steady supply of his disarmed magical foes) - more so than his ability to idly converse (can anyone really imagine Voldemort actively making small talk with her, even if she craved such dialogue?). The direct communication ultimately helped only in ensuring she was able to precisely understand and follow his orders, which she came to trust, and her lack of any qualms or hesitancy in doing so (unlike so many of his remaining death eaters) were what he will have valued most highly of all.

7:22 That's not a very valid point. "Maledictuses lost the ability to think like a human as time went on"
Which implies she would think like a snake. If that's the reasoning you would have to say all snakes are bad.

Snakes kill to eat and to defend themselves. They do it for survival but still, that's what they do. It may not necessarily make them evil, but someone who is used to kill, is more easily persuaded to kill more.

  • @Aedren

I don't think she was/would become evil by her own. Not trusting humans and attacking them while she felt threatened? Yes, that I think would be more likely.
I rather think she became evil thanks due Voldemort, as she could feel being accepted by him, as Voldemort could try and make her feel being understood.

  • @rustydaboyrobot

I have a different take on Nagini. I don't see her as "evil", but amoral. Animals are neither evil...nor good...they are either wild or domesticated...and are either trained well or poorly....and trained to harm or help.
Nagini may have held on to her humanity for a long time...but eventually, she WAS a snake. Any part that was human, apart from intellect, was completely and forever lost.
So, while i contend she was not evil, neither did she feel remorse or any human connection to her or Voldemort's actions. It simply WAS. And she was trainable.. all snakes understand Parselmouth...so Voldemort's ability to train....and appear kindred in spirit...sets Nagini on this ultimate path of "evil deeds" with a superior intelligence to carry out those orders. But, you have to know good to know you are evil; it's a choice between the two. She was unable to understand this concept.

I've not upto now heard this theory being mentioned though it may have? Finding out that Harry is a horcrux could that have had an impact on the Dursley's with the hate they all shown him being with the horcrux all of Harry's life, like we learnt mostly learnt when Ron wore the horcrux around his neck it turned him darker and a weight was lifted off Harry and hermarnie (I know I spelt her name wrong) just thought?
