Whoa, flashback to the 90's & thinking what a great time that was, unlike today -2022. This show is about 30 years old now & still as good now as it was then! Thanks for uploading this .✌
Fifteen. Omg that might be the show I've been trying to think of ...I've been trying to remember the name of it for many years!! Thanks 👍 OMG IT IS!! THANK YOU FOR REMINDING ME!!!
Just thought about this show again. Totally feeling the 90s nostalgia vibe. Wish these shows were all on dvd so we could enjoy classic nick whenever we wanted.
The first television pilot of the show was filmed in May 1990, featuring a group of local actors in the main roles, among them was future Backstreet Boys member Howie Dorough. After the success of the pilot, the show was picked up, but the roles were recast, according to series creator Bob Mittenthal "Those kids did a good job, the proof is that the show was picked up as a series, but research told Nickelodeon it needed better-defined characters". The central characters, all students at the fictional Hawthorne High, gather for the show in a shopping-mall setting and talk about their freshman lives. This banter often segues into comedy sketches such as the commercial parody on the prank-proof suit. Welcome Freshman's characters are: - Kevin (played by Chris), the cool kid and perhaps the most normal character, with the exception that he tends to develop crushes on every girl he meets. - Walter (Rick), the "surfer dude" of the ensemble. He's ultra-laid-back and affable but not too bright. He's a regular in detention hall. - Merv (David), the genius nerd and proud of it. His claim to fame: "Merv-u-mentaries," in which he attempts to expose school scandals like cheating. Often these backfire. - Alex (Jocelyn), the beautiful and bossy one. She's boy-crazy and materialistic. - Tara (Jill), the conscience of the group. She's into recycling and animal rights.
Oh, wow!! I had totally forgotten about this entertaining show until some episodes popped up as recommendations! It's coming back!! I loved this back in the day. It's nice to be able to revisit episodes now. Binge watching! 😍❤🤗
Evie Frye, good call on all of those except 'Fifteen.' I remember that as basically just a boring, forgettable teen drama and living proof that not everything Nick made in the 90's was gold.
Agreed. There must be some legal reasons that this series and round house are not on DVD. And I want to add that I thought Merv was Geeky-Cute when this series first aired
As a kid it took me a while to get the concept of the show and it always threw me off. It was a sketch show disguised as a sitcom, which was actually genius.
I used to love this show. my favorite time of day was Saturday Night. I loved Snick. I know this show wasn't on Snick but it was a Nick show. And I loved the big orange couch. "snick-or-treat". Kids today have no idea what they missed with Nick in the 90's. I wish those shows would bring a comeback. shows like; You Can't Do That On Television, Roadhouse, Pete and Pete, Are You Afraid of the Dark, Clarissa Exlains It All, All That, Welcome Freshman, Fifteen, the Amanda Show, Kenan and Kel, and shows like that.

My dad was in this show & Rick Galloway is a close family friend of ours. He & his wife had a baby, Brody a few months ago. He's the cutest baby EVER to exist. It's awesome watching these clips knowing I know some of these people.
I have been trying to find welcome freshmen for over a year now! Thanks dude! I love how you included the commercial bumpers too! You rock. Now if only this was on DVD... XD
When I was a little kid in the early 90's, 14 year old Freshmen seemed like the height of mature sophistication. They were in high school! They were basically adults in my mind.
This show totally prepared me for high school. :P I used to watch it all the time until they changed the cast and tried to turn it into a drama instead of a comedy. I had the biggest crush on Alex...
man I loved welcome freshman. It made me think highschool would kick ass (it didnt ;( ) i loved tara her hair ,her attitude everything :D I still hear the name "merv" and think "Merv the perv" :D
Dave Rhoden works for 5-11 tactical and lives in the Washington state/Portland area. Jill setter-rusk is a dental hygienist married to a firefighter living in weechie each
Geez, haven't seen this since probably like 1994. Theme song is pretty rockin' and I like it more than I did back then - also holds up better than the show. I also remember when the show got inexplicably retooled with a more conventional, dramatic tone a couple seasons later - wondered what that was about and I guess I still do.
Merv (Dave Rhoden) is alive and well living in Washington State working for 5-11 tactical products. Tara (Jill Setter) still lives in Florida and works for a dentist. She's married to a firefighter. Alex (Jocelyn Steiner) I believe lives in Washington DC and Walter (Rick Galloway) live in California and works or owns a lighting business uses for entertainment.
This was taken from a Nickelodeon rerun 1996. The show aired originally Saturday Evenings and Sunday Afternoons from February 1991-February 1994 with repeats until Oct. 1996 for 30-minute episodes.
This was from a 1993-1994 rerun of the show; hence the Legends of the Hidden Temple plug during the credits (and the older style of "we'll be right back"/"now back to.." bumpers are used; they would be retired late in 1994 or early in 1995).
I much prefer the episodes with Merv & Tara over the episodes with Grant & Erin, I thought Merv & Tara were funnier and far more likable characters than Grant & Erin.
+SneauxMan08 There were a few differences I can remember. 1. 'Welcome Freshmen' was much funnier, and took itself much less seriously. 2. "SBTB" portrayed high school as fun, safe, and clean. 'Welcome Freshmen' portrayed it as the seventh circle of Hell, especially for underclassmen. 3. The "Administrator" characters on the shows were pretty much polar opposites. Mr. Belding on 'SBTB' was an out- of- touch prude, but also shown to be a good, decent man just doing his job who really cared about the kids and almost always acted in what he believed to be everyone's best interests. Mr. Lipman on 'Welcome Freshmen,' in contrast, was a selfish, sadistic prick (Albeit an extremely funny selfish, sadistic prick) who hated the kids, especially freshmen, and took advantage of any opportunity he could get to make their lives miserable.
The show's original format was a sketch comedy show with a certain theme integrated in each episode in the first 2 seasons. Some of the comedy routines involved a tortoise named Mortise teaching children about safety, a historian named Mr. History who talks about past generations of freshmen, the bumbling, freshman-hating, vice principal Mr. Lippman imagining himself as a stand-up comedian telling really bad old jokes that insult freshmen, and a student named Billy Cushman who, though his appearance was occasional, provided not only a good example of how not to behave, but also a good example of flatulence. Each episode had two or three short skits about the gang's misadventures in high school. Recurring skits Home-Room Announcements-Mr. Lippman, the vice principal, doing the morning announcements (at the same time, imagining how he'd really like to say them as a stand-up format). Coach Roach The Merv-U-Mentary-Merv's amateurish attempt at uncovering news and scandals at the high school. Mr. History-featuring the gang as high school students of a past time period. Mike Who-featuring close-ups of a sidelined high school basketball player driving the crowd wild with a single wave. Eventually cut after vice Principal Lippman said it was too distracting, resulting in a tense showdown between Lippman and Who. Mortise the Safety Tortoise In the 3rd and 4th seasons, the sketch format was abandoned and Welcome Freshmen became a regular retootled sitcom and character driven. The gang became sophomores, except Walter who flunked and was held behind. Merv and Tara left, with Merv skipping the rest of high school and going straight to college, and Tara and her family moving to a Biosphere. New characters came in: Manny and Erin (incoming freshmen) and Grant, a junior who was Erin's brother and soon became Alex's boyfriend. Eventually Walter moves up to sophomore as the teachers all threatened to quit if they had him another year.
Howie Dorough (of Backstreet Boys fame) was originally cast to play the role of Kevin St. James in Nickelodeon's "Welcome Freshman." After the pilot was successful, the producers replaced Howie with Christopher Lobban.
According to Jocelyn Steiner, several actresses had auditioned for the role of Alex before she got cast, including Brittany Daniel who was a final contender for the role.
Sorry, weechie wachie fl, Jocelyn is a lawyer in wash dc, I lost track of Chris lobban and Rick lives in LA doing lighting for productions and events. Mike speller lives in Chicago and does classes on acting/improv stuff
24:07 - "What will Clarissa do today? A country China? An astronaut? A swami? We'll find out when Clarissa Explains It All. Tonight at 6/5c only on Nick. Hi, this is Kirk Fogg. Stay tuned for Legends of the Hidden Temple. Next on Nick.
yeah rick is married now! he's a close family friend of mine. he looks basically the same, just a little older. he is the CUTEST son in the world, named Brody. He's a little over a year. And his wife, Ali, is the sweetest. They're actually going to my dad's wedding this August. Rick is kind of like my non-biological uncle. I'm not sure the name of my dad's character but I know he was a consistent character through a season. rick is doing a lot of tech work now instead of acting, same as my dad.
I thought this is what high school would be like, & now I understand some of how I gravitated towards Broadcast Arts Club. Hmmm. I never cared much for Saved By the Bell.
This still underrated high school sitcom spoof really deserved much praise as salute your shorts did. it lasted a season longer than shorts, but it was the worst season of the series.
Wax my big round chrome dome?! You've got some explaining to do, smart boy. Do you know the penalty for impersonating an administrator of this school. You are about to find out.
lol this is starting to be the most ridiculous conversation. Ok, here's the extent of mine and Rick's relationship/friendship/whatever. My dad met him on the show, which then they became friends. Later in the 90's, my dad had me and then later on down the road, Rick moved to California. Then a few years later, we moved to California. Then, I was able to see Rick (when I was in elementary school) a little more frequently. Then later, my family and I moved to Vegas and I didn't see him again
This show never got the respect it deserved.

In the 3rd and 4th seasons, the sketch format was abandoned and Welcome Freshmen became a regular retootled sitcom and character driven.
I wish at the very least they would put this Netflix or Hulu.

Memories 😊
yeah rick is married now! he's a close family friend of mine. he looks basically the same, just a little older. he is the CUTEST son in the world, named Brody.
Tara and Alex were my favorite on this show.
am i the only one who could see Jason Hervey playing Walter?
I thought this is what high school would be like, & now I understand some of how I gravitated towards Broadcast Arts Club. Hmmm. I never cared much for Saved By the Bell.
love this thanks for posting
This still underrated high school sitcom spoof really deserved much praise as salute your shorts did. it lasted a season longer than shorts, but it was the worst season of the series.
I remember this but it wasnt my favorite. I remember changing the channel everytime it came on.
Welcome Freshmen originally aired from 1991 to 1993 and lasted 4 seasons. This is probably a rerun from 1996.
Kids in the hall for Nickelodeon
It's strange. I haven fragments of the show running around in my head but I just don't really remember much about it.
Just so you know, knowing this is from VHS, the quality is better than I expected. Ignore others.
Wax my big round chrome dome?! You've got some explaining to do, smart boy. Do you know the penalty for impersonating an administrator of this school. You are about to find out.
Lippman ruled!
Welcome freshmen classic explanin it All
lol this is starting to be the most ridiculous conversation.
Welcome Freshmen Schedule Archive (Feb. 16, 1991 to Oct. 27, 1996) please
