Yeah the only way you could Do that is if you tricked the game into thinking the controller is a Wii mote on its side because that uses a d-pad. They basically have the same design anyway. I just realized that this is ultimate and not sm4sh and Wii motes don't work

Ultimate which it's proof that those NES Controllers aren't useless outside of NES Online.
If you remember back to when the NES Online came out, the update had the controller icons featured in the bottom left hand corner at 5:33, there was also a Famicom controller for the Japanese NES Online. More importantly there was a SNES controller icon and a Super Famicom icon so in the future, maybe a January direct, we could be shown SNES games on the online service with the controllers to boot.

Nice video, simple yet informative. If I happen to have some spare cash later down the line I might invest in this attachment. Two questions not answered by this video: 1. Where do you go to buy a pair? 2. Do these work with the Famicom app from the Japanese eShop? 3. Is there any way to get the Famicom controllers instead and would they work with the NES app?

I can see them making these work for smash by making the shield button be holding A and B at the same time. And making the d-pad able to move the character. Maybe a setting in Smash itself.

you could edit the controls to make the dpad for movement you would have to use tap jump and also press Shield and A together to grab with that set you technically could use this controller
