+steven clark Jody's videos are the best. It is because of him I caught the welding bug and bought my everlast welder. I can't wait to start tig welding.
Same here. I never welded ever before and ended up buying one of the Everlast welders that he reviewed. I hope to "teach" my kids how to weld at some point. I just hope my teaching skills are even a fraction as good as Jody's.
i got my tig fingers in the mail thanks jody, i watch you vids everynight, they are helping out immensely i will be goin on a pipe job in 3 weeks, and i will be trying in out, im working a powerhouse outage right now welding structure
Thank you for all the information I gotta say that your channel has been probable one of the main factors with my progression in school for welding! Thank you for the great info and keep it coming 😁
Thanks for the video, Jody. I do art welding, and it is almost the norm for me to be in an out-of-position situation. Instructions like this are very valuable to me. Great stuff!
I have a Lincoln precision 275. Good machine. love it. 27 years in the business.Doing overhead or vertical up , all you have to do is adjust your angle to account for gravity (liquid metal) and then train your brain to look at it as if its flat.
i just passed my exam today for flat tig weld on 1/8 mild steel ( 5 joints ) and believe me ... on monday im going to surprise my teacher with this for sure
hiya i don't know if he replied to you or not, but a root, is the first weld run you do, the "root run", it is the most important as you need to penetrate as much as you can into the material. when he says the first pass must penetrate into the root he means the second run you do (capping run), like you did with getting the root run penetrated into the material, you want the second pass to penetrate into the root run to ensure your fusing the weld metal together rather than just welding on top.
Very the way you explain tig welding, does it requires grounding the metal when it is up high? I cannot really decided what would be a good welding machine to buy. Thanks.
sir. i see u are a very experienced welder. i have watched a lots of your clips. u have similary welding technique as myself, and ofc i have learned some of yours. ty and good luck
you could run it a little hotter but i wouldnt go nothing but maybe 5-7 amps for the hotpass, when it comes to the cap though, i wouldnt change any amperage. Because after running the last two passes the metal being welded is already hot as hell so its best to keep the cap the same amperage just to stay away from undercut.
your vids are great, just wish you could drop back a few gears and do some on basic things you take for granted, iam just starting on tig and want to know how to get my settings right, sharpening tungsten, how much heat should be in a weld especially stainless, iam trying to weld lights guage say 1.6 mm tube splice, setting gas, choice of filler rod , welding differnt guage, technec for handling and feeding filler rod, do i need an expensive helmet...that would be a great start.....
thats great thecnique. i was just wondering why dont you use a bit more amp on the second pass? i always heard that makes a better fusion. does it ruin the properties of the metal? what do you think?
I just got my everlast welder delivered from ups. If I want to get into tig welding should I start with a air cooled torch or upgrade to a smaller water cooled torch?
are you pushing or pulling? to me arc and mig overhead are easy as horizontal. it is the same principal just upside down. I cant figure out tig overhead! but i been arc and mig (spray arc) structural for 10 yrs. when I overhead 7018 I drag it. (also cause alot of time its inside a small opening and dragging is only option) if your welder is set right you should just about be able to strike your arc and hold the rod on the steel with a consistant pressure at 45 degrees and it will burn nicely.
now i have a question im still new to welding tig. so all i have is a simple scratch start i hook up to my stick welder. well is there a type of tourch i can use to make a pilse are a foot peddle i can hook up for it. im asking cuz the boat i bought well lets say i got it was cheap cuz it was in a accident ran into a bodge but need to fix it i have a spool gun r i tride the crappy aluminum welding rods. but i rather use a tig. so do you know something i can use
man that opposite hand looks pretty good, see im a great tig welder with my dominant hand but when it comes to my left.............i dont know where to start, any tipss?
Oh, yeah, one more question. Do you use a bright light to illuminate the field of view to try and reduce the high contrast that happens when you strike an arc? Thanks.
do you lay the wire or dab? idk i think laying the wire is better when walking the cup or on t-joints.......but everything else like pad beads just dab the filler.
jody!! thanks for all you do, but have a request, do a video on cooking ss and the in and outs of color on the welds. been on previous jobs where qc wants no color.
Contaminated argon coverage? Haven't experienced it myself when using my PowerTIG but a friend of mine was using too much argon flow which started to suck air into the weld. Maybe a leak, too little argon, not clean metal, etc, too.
not sure if you have a video on it but I'd like to see different methods of feeding the tig rod with your left hand as your welding. having trouble with it.
Hi, Jody. I'm interested in how you get such a good video of the welding puddle. Are you setting the video camera in manual exposure mode, or do you use auto exposure? Do you use autofocus? Do you protect your camera lens from splatter and light with a welding lens on the camera? Does your welding lens over the camera have an autodarkening feature?
I recommend buying Jodys tig fingers I own 2 of them and they are very very helpful great product and they last forever and let's you weld a lot longer.
that looks easy! my problem is the filler wants to just fall instead of go in the puddle. the puddle dont fall, I can run the puddle just fine but the filler rod just falls all over me. any ideas?
I've been trying left handed TIG (I'm a righty)...what's your address so I can send you a bill for all the tungsten I've been burying? ;) Great videos, Jody!
It is like rubbing your belly and patting your head at the same time. I've tried to learn to left hand weld since buying by powertig welder and although I'm better today than I was back then I'm far from being very good.
so for us newbies, what exactly is the root you are referring to when you say the first pass must penetrate to the root? Also, other posts here suggest 1 amp to each 0.001" of metal but you are way under that. How do you choose the amperage?
I think he's talking about the base of the weld, the part where the original 2 plates of metal touch each other. You want to make sure those are bonding/fusing together. Similar to solder where you need to get both pieces of metal hot enough so that they fuse and you're not just melting the filler to the top of the surface.
well everybody has there own style and what I do might not work for you but. I weld really hot compared to most people. I weld overhead the same amps/volts as I do horizontal. and vert down. (no you cannot vert down 7018!!!) I only change my heat for vert up in which case i turn my heat down. with 7018 your gonna get a small belly in the weld but shouldnt be much more then hori/vert. I suggest playing with your angles. I like to stay at a 45* to the fillet or 90* to butt. draggin at a 45*
Im welding wrought iron security gate for my basement using TIG. I get sparks like light sprinkles that fly off 1 to 2 feet high what am i doing wrong ? They singed my to be bald spot on the head too.
hey jody, can you do a video of 3f and 4f fillet welds with tig welding, with different tecniques of laying in a root pass? like dipping the rod, laying the rod, wiggling the cup and dipping the rod and laying the rod and wiggling the cup with an etch of each one at the end? just trying to see what has the best penetration for a root pass for pipe. i can do the laywire and walking the cup and dipping, i feel more comfortable with laywire though, just wanna see what can penetrate best. Thanks!
weldingtipsandtricks Do you recommend to learn to weld with both hands? Im in a scenario where im doing a tube weld with its flat end on a vertical plate's surface along with 3 strings (piling them from the middle and out). 6-3 o'clock and 9-12 o'clock is a real pain in the a** due to a blind path for me when im holding the pistol in my right hand. I want my welds to end up as perfect as yours! :D Regards Eric
Anyone else having the problem of the cup geting sticky on the metal? It gets stuck for me quite often, and i can bairly have any preasure from the cup to the metal because it gets stuck...
I do alot I think it might be because of a dity cup and surface of the metal. It often happens to me aswell, and it cuases some bounces which makes it all chaotic, often ends up dipping the electrode in the fusion :P I suppose thh only solution is experience tho :S
Jan-Eric. blixten! Its not usually the cup! now you don't wanna use a huge cup in a tight spot! however, I think you're applying too much pressure. one of the hardest things about tig welding for me, was figuring out how to hold my tourch. many different ways\methods! find out what works for you and perfect it! cheers!
Please, Sir, how I can get on the welding machine like this I'm from Iraq, do I need in my work it is because we have a demand for them and how and how much the price can reaching me and how I pay you money
Thank you so much for the informative video..it will help me when welding overhead... Note* the usaf doesnt teach walking the cup. I guess we dont have a need for it in the aviation repair.
its probably a 309 stainless rod which is used for mild steel or when ur unsure of what kind of steel u have. the stainless wets out really nice and when ur amps are set right it follows the arc. it really makes for a great arc shot and helps show what the fundamentals of wtc are
Im not even a welder, these videos just soothe my perfectionist side. Good stuff man.
+steven clark Jody's videos are the best. It is because of him I caught the welding bug and bought my everlast welder. I can't wait to start tig welding.

Sebastian Adams I you stole the words out my mouth. Jody got me sold on tig and on the Everlast machine. I got the power 185 dv
If you only knew how hard this is. It's like driving a car on two wheels, playing violin upside down simultaneously.
i got my tig fingers in the mail thanks jody, i watch you vids everynight, they are helping out immensely i will be goin on a pipe job in 3 weeks, and i will be trying in out, im working a powerhouse outage right now welding structure
ive been interning with a welder who has been welding for 30+ years and u say the same he does with more explanation. thanks for the great vids man!
#1 welder on UA-cam !
Idk what id do without your videos. Ty
10 years ago and still A1 video. Legend 💯 💪
Great stuff!
you got some of the best welding videos
Thank you for this video. I will be welding like this for the first time to fix the frame of my truck.
I love watching you weld Jody. I sure wish I was a proficient in using my powertig as you are.
I have a Lincoln precision 275. Good machine. love it. 27 years in the business.Doing overhead or vertical up , all you have to do is adjust your angle to account for gravity (liquid metal) and then train your brain to look at it as if its flat.
Thankyou Jody, that was a great video ... I love the closeups of the welding action ...
i just passed my exam today for flat tig weld on 1/8 mild steel ( 5 joints ) and believe me ... on monday im going to surprise my teacher with this for sure
tig welding is so much fun. just got my powertig welder so i'm not quite up to doing overhead yet but maybe soon!

Ihave been a welder for 25 years. I have a welding shop in Florida and I just got the tig finger I love it I don't know how I welded with out it.
Very the way you explain tig welding, does it requires grounding the metal when it is up high? I cannot really decided what would be a good welding machine to buy. Thanks.

you have the best welding videos!!!! thank you so much for your hard work!

Er70s2? Your such a bad ass jody. Switch up and go left. Good idea on welding to an edge instead of from. Never thought of that
great video, have you done any over head with stick welding cant seem to find one and i strugle with welding overhead at work.
do you dab the filler rod into the puddle like you would on a pad bead? or do you just leave the filler in place and just walk over the filler?
man that opposite hand looks pretty good, see im a great tig welder with my dominant hand but when it comes to my left.............i dont know where to start, any tipss?
cool i learn alot every time i watch you videos can you do some vertical stick welds tips and overhead welding
Oh, yeah, one more question. Do you use a bright light to illuminate the field of view to try and reduce the high contrast that happens when you strike an arc?
Thanks.
What????
1st pass- root pass
2nd- hot pass
3rd & up- fill pass
Last beads showing- cap
do you lay the wire or dab? idk i think laying the wire is better when walking the cup or on t-joints.......but everything else like pad beads just dab the filler.

Dear, you can weld aluminum in position. Over head ??????
not sure if you have a video on it but I'd like to see different methods of feeding the tig rod with your left hand as your welding. having trouble with it.
Gamblerscop same
I figured it out. I switched to straight argon and it was like day and night. I was using 25% CO2 and suffering and thinking my welder is broke.
Excellent video dear sir. Keep up good work. Regards,
my mig welding clamp works great upside down no burns no protective gear
I recommend buying Jodys tig fingers I own 2 of them and they are very very helpful great product and they last forever and let's you weld a lot longer.
+LILTDOTMP3G I bought one for my everlast stick welder and another one for my everlast tig welder. I might get an XL tig finger too!
Yeah I bought a couple for my everlast welders too. Now only if Jody sold them in the color green! LOL
I'm taking TIG welding this year.😎
buen video! Saludos desde Argentina.
that looks easy! my problem is the filler wants to just fall instead of go in the puddle. the puddle dont fall, I can run the puddle just fine but the filler rod just falls all over me. any ideas?
another very good video! well done, man!

I try left myself sometimes, doesn't work well usually. Sometimes in My work i'm forced to because the part can only be reached that way. Any insight?
Any tips om how to weld in this position on a cylinder?

pulling, its angles and amps i think would it need to be done at lower or high amps then horizontal.
Is that size cup necessary to weld over head? And is two passes needed for overhead
Try a 10 cup should have a easy time overhead
Would you walk the cup if you had a foot pedal ?...It seems your walking it because your using the all the amps you have dialed on the machine ?
well everybody has there own style and what I do might not work for you but. I weld really hot compared to most people. I weld overhead the same amps/volts as I do horizontal. and vert down. where can i get the tig torch switch and how much do it cost?
thankyou sir for this video i learned a lot...
I wonder if a glass cup will scratch the base metal when walking the cup?
Awesome color
What kind of electrode i need for welding iron, inox and alumi.
haha nice vid man, good for me I'm actually left handed! I have to do this soon.
What kind of welding helmet and welding helmet bib is that?

4:10 Geesh I just freaked out when that arc started. Then laughed at myself realizing my instinct was mistaken and me eyes aren’t flashed….
NOW I UNDERSTAND TIG THECNIQUE!
THANKS!
How many amps do you have the Everlast welder set for?
What's your settings ???
Yeah I figured it had to be something like that. Whenever I PowerTIG and I see fireworks the first thing I think is contaminated argon shield.

dude your awesome!!
kel beau travail. vraiment des professionnel
Excelent welder.
love the tig finger
DAMN, left hand welding for the win! :)
Looks like he used a stainless steel rod for his second pass? But the plate metal looks like low carbon steel?

Red tip tungsten for steel white tip tungsten for aluminium grey tip for both.
Or GREEN band tungsten for aluminum
That's what I use.
It looks like it would be too much angle. Not perpendicular enough.
sorry for the crappy typing, im half asleep, been a long 10 hours at work fitting skin casing around the nox burners
bien esos videos da chanba mister
Good Welding
left handed, right handed with or without a mirror if ya don't like how I do it I'll let you try it.10-4
Why would you ask this question ? Do you know anything about TIG ?
hi, I am a TIG welder, i live in brazil, i want to work in another country, can anybory help me
Renon Dias jaja
nice
i have no clue how he doesnt get drips from the wire...
Joseph O'Hara dont get underneath the weld and it wont drip on you i been welding for a long time
yes ofc there is gas... look it up
I was thinking of 3/32 electrodes, not 1/8
