Taste Hawaii’s Famous Mochi
Вставка
- Опубліковано 7 бер 2018
- Japan’s favorite, mochi, has become a Hawaii treat-at least in Nora Uchida's kitchen. Uchida, a third-generation Japanese-American living in Hilo, Hawaii, inherited her grandmother's mochi recipe and evolved it to include the colors and eclectic tastes of her beloved state. For the past 25 years, she and her family have owned and operated Hilo's last mochi storefront, Two Ladies Kitchen. If you can beat the line running out the door on weekends, you're in for a delicious, only-in-Hawaii treat.

An Uber driver recommended I check out this place whilst I was in Hilo a couple of weeks ago. He said it was just a “hole in the wall” sort of place but it had the best mochi you could find. I bought six pieces, they gave me two extra strawberry daifuku as a “visitor bonus.” The next day I went back and they actually recognized me and were just glad that I liked it. Really sweet people working there.
Ren Hikaru - aw, they all seem like very nice people! I hope to visit this place if I go to Hawaii! 💕💕
Ren Hikaru what’s the place called?
2 Ladies Kitchen I believe
@Jenette M it means a small owned business and not owned or franchised by a big corporate company.
Honestly it goes for customers here if your a regular customer they will say hi and stuff
"it STICKS everyone together" I just wanted to cry that was so sweet
Also, someone hire her to do storybook read-aloud videos for children, her voice is so friendly and calming.
Ikr when I got to that part, I felt a sudden urge to cry
Never been more true :D
I thought in the beginning when she spoke that she was one of the usual narrators
FOR FUCKSAKE I WAS IN HAWAII THREE DAYS AGO AND NOW THIS IS IN MY RECOMMENDED??

Welp looks like you have to go back to Hawaii, oh no 😂🤷🏻♀️

OMG I ONLY HAD THIS MOCHI ONCE! They’re always sold out when I visit because their mochi is first come first serve and EVERYONE wants it
tubenshaft ahhh I so would lol but I’m not from the island that has this Mochi shop sadly
tubenshaft maybe kinda late for you, but you can go to their website and order them. Call FedEx to pick it up and ship it to u. I live in O’ahu-2 islands away from Hawai’i. I always order them and have FedEx ship them to me
carmie329 you can make it at home!
Just add a half a cup of glutinous rice flour, water and sugar and microwave for 4 mins if ur microwave is 900 Watts (adjust to suit ur microwave)
Then add ur ice cream lol
Feels bad, i live on oahu
@tubenshaft go to your local Japanese store my favorite flavor is strawberry. Btw i live in Cali and they aren't too hard to find
Love her voice...pleasant and soothing. 👍 Oh and love me some mochi.
this lady is my husbands cousin. his uncle works there and hes in his 90s.
Tosh T it is
I wish I lived in Hawaii ;-;
Axel Goes To UA-cam No you don’t. Be kinda glad where you live. I live in Hawaii, there’s always something bad about Hawaii that people don’t know much about.
Cool
she sounds like the aunt who will feed you and will love you regardless of where you're from 🥰
All Aunties from Hawaii are like that 🥰
@@j69confessional Tru dat
All aunties are like that in Hawaii 💕
My aunt laughs at me whenever I do something stupid then adds "bet you'll think before you act huh?" 😂
It's a very unique Japanese culture in Hawaii. Like special mochi and poke rice

Khanh Kha Minh

It was not my joke. I just quoted a line she said in the vid XD. I love that line the most.
Lol. No offense but majority of Japanese stuffs are originated from China. Thing like Chinese characters you see in shopa and restaurants, those chinese old building, Chinese Qin/Han inspired clothing that know as kimono, the famous Chinese chopsticks and mochi aka Chinese new year mochi cake.
P. S
I remember reading somewhere that the ninja was also came from Shaolin China. When a ninja does it hand signal, it's representing Buddha.
U laughed at ur on joke
Very cool
I live in Hawaii! It is awesome!
-gives mochi to everyone who likes-
Ric C I live in Hawaii too, but in Kona not Hilo and I went there months ago before I knew this :(
Wolfurie Sorry! I wish you could try it! -gives homemade mochi-

i also live in Hawaii, my lifestyle sucks. It’s freaking ghetto, broke, and sad. I live in oahu :/
We moved to Hawaii Island in Hilo in 2016, and we've been eating Two Ladies Kitchen mochi ever since! It really is extremely delicious, and it makes you happy.
Living in Hawaii on the island of Oahu and having eaten this delicious mochi from Two Ladies Kitchen, it's amazing finally being able to see the people so dedicated to making it :) it always felt like it was filled with Aloha which means love in Hawaiian
Jason Cheers don’t forget about that useless rail
What about bubbies mochi 🍡
Jason Cheers exactly, who in their right mind thinks, “oh look sacred land that’s special to the indigenous people of this island, John let’s build some condos, they’d like that.”
Her grandparents were STUNNING!!!! Such gorgeous people!!!!
YES!! I literally stopped the video and said out loud, "Those two are BEAUTIFUL!" It's a great picture.
The grandfather was divine!
I know! Talk about having good genes! Good lord lol
I’m a simple person
I READ mochi, I click.
I see you 😎 ARMYS
Same and I still didn’t try it yet 😭
Armyy

It’s sad that mega corporations are making it harder for her to continue her passion
Bob Evens Their ingredients, passion and talents still gets her customers tho
There are mass produced mochi? I've never seen mochi in my life. If i had i would have tried it!
no freaking way dude, if you've ever had their mochi you would know there's no way they're going out of business any time soon.
The Doc can you link the shop?
Not really. As soon as they open there's a line out the door and down the street. They sell out everyday.
Bro I'm going to Hawaii, there's no turning back now
The universe is trying to hold us back cuz it threw Covid at us!
Me:Did you know that Hawaii was really hot
Her:they have snow
Naruto Nine tails the snow is high up the Mauna das why.
And look around in the Philippines
*there's literally no snow.. only hail storm*
Naruto Nine tails
There’s snow on the highest mountain peaks on Hawaii Island, aka “Big Island”
I’ve been told that there’s even snow on the island of Maui on occasion.
It’s not that it’s “really hot.” It’s just that the temperature is regulated by the water that surrounds the islands, so the sun or the lack of sun doesn’t have an effect on the temperature that much. That’s why Hawai’i doesnt really have distinct seasons.
Naruto Nine tails stop the memes, this video is just too wholesome for this.
The red bean and strawberry mochi is called Ichigo Daifuku. It’s popular in Japan.
This was so cute! The Mochi, the lady, her accent, the scenery... i love this!!
Sara Tanjala she doesn't have an accent?
Sara Tanjala she doesn't have an accent
Do u mean when she says Hawai’i?? Cuz I have white friends who think I have an accent just because of the way I correctly pronounce the Hawaiian islands.
Akamai Pineapple as an person for an outside perspective I believe I hear an accent.
Hawaiian natives sound like this.
Gimme some of dat _MOCHI_
Kookoo's Fake Love yaasss arrmmyyyy😆😆😆 Jimin Mochi😂

I want to taste one some day 😢
Oh my gosh... My mouth just watered. Mochi is honestly the best thing ever.
Holy moly and filled with fruit makes my mouth water
I dunno why, but hearing her talk about Mochi and what it means to her, and the importance of continuing to share and develop new ways of making it with others got me choked up. Truly inspiring to see... Especially seeing her 90+ year old parents still at it!
Love this channel! Always showing me new things I would’ve never known otherwise💗 Guess I now know where I must go when I visit Hawaii some day😄
AlittleYorkie ikr? I'm also very eager to visit this place soon now and I love both Polynesian and Japanese culture! I've been to Hawaii multiple times during childhood but only to Honolulu and potentially Maui, very beautiful and comforting place 💕
Two Ladies Kitchen is a must visit if you come to Hilo town! Small but such a big aloha spirit.
AlittleYorkie 😂😂😂 I live there (here)
Alohaxxsavage_girl That’s awesome! You’re so lucky :)
I mochi this channel too. They puts so much mochi in their videos.
That fresh strawberry mochi is the BOMB. The strawberry was tart with the sweet azuki beans surrounded by the mochi. WOW!!!
It's the thing of dreams 😍
Oh wow, this video had me intrigued. She's so passionate and u can hear it in the way she speaks about it. This is a very adorable video. I loved it
I love mochi and would love to try Hawaiian mochi
WSomms29 it's the same except Hawaii have more flavors like macaroons we have lilikoi 😋
I tried it before It hella good
It was wonderful to watch. You make it so beautiful. Thank you.
This story is so sweet! I also love the way shee talks! It's so calming and friendly.
I need Great Big Story to comeback and make more stories like this 😭💔
Even though she grew up in Hawaii, she still has that distinguishing japanese accent while fluently speaking english. I greatly applaud this woman. Hope I can try your mochis in the future.
Lol I thought you typed disgusting instead of distinguishing the first few times I read it and I was about to get mad 😂
I don’t hear a Japanese accent. I hear a Hawaiian accent.
This is my island and I feel really proud seeing this
What about the Polynesians of the Islands? They don’t shine the light on the almost extinct Hawaiians, only the Asians. Many people are from Hawaii, but we’re all not OF Hawaii.
jake from statefarm this video not about them g let their nuts go
Aww her parents are so caring and kind to be supporting and helping her still even tho they’re in their 90s. It’s so soothing listening to her voice. If Two Ladies Kitchen is still around when I am able to travel to Hawaii then Ima get every one I could get my hands on 😫.
This was a beautiful video! My ancestors were also Japanese plantation workers in Hawaii. I could relate to everything here to such a degree that it made me tear up. Different families, but very similar stories. I'm glad there are people out there with such passion for their family traditions.
I’ve been there before, they are some of the kindest, truest, most warm hearted people ever. It’s definitely worth the trip.
Beautiful story there
I have had Two Ladies Mochi in my carry on at Honolulu Airport. The screeners all were drooling when I said it was Two Ladies. I miss there mochi so much!
I love how she answers her calling to make not only mochi, but beautiful and meaningful ones ❤
This is what I love about family own businesses like this, they keeping the tradition alive. When I go to Hawaii someday I will definitely visit this place.
I'm so glad I was able to enjoy this mochi especially from your kitchen...first come first serve and I recommend everyone to go early
This makes me want to fly to Hawaii just to try these. Something to add to my bucket list
The way she talks about it is just heartwarming. 💜
This lady is such a hard worker. I always see her and her parents hand deliver their products themselves. Love them
This place sells THE best mochi. We go there every time we visit my grandma in Hilo.
This was so beautiful to watch, thank you for sharing ♥
It is beautiful to see that everyone of those people who is in your videos has his own kind of the happiness. Thank you very much!
My favorite story on this channel. So nice to see how long their lines are. Wonderful people
I finally got to check this one off my bookmarked list after a year and a half, and it was just as amazing as I expected!
I’ve always wanted to try Mochiii 😍 Also the parents of the lady speaking are so adorable! They are very dedicated just like their daughter!
She is really passionate about her work! And her parents are so inspiring 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
I love this lady and how she shares her love and culture through food. ❤️
as a person who lives in hawaii, it's rare to get videos about Hawaii kn my fyp.
I feel thankful that I live in Hawaii.
I’m so glad to be part of this culture. As a fellow Hawaiian Filipinos warms my heart to see this. I’ve been to Hawaii probably three times and I’ve loved it EVERY time. I hope to go back next year :)
i remember getting a box of this wonderful stuff at the KTA store when we were on holiday on the Big Island 2016 - so excited to see the 2 ladies behind such deliciousness! Will always remember bouncing back into our car to tear into this awesome platter of mochi's... would go back to Hawaii just to have some more 💗💗💗💗💗💗💗💗
everything about this video just radiates positive and wholesome energy and I'm totally here for that🥺💕
I live in Hawaii and there's so much culture and life in the islands.
To just give a little taste of what it's like. We have our own little language, trust me, most of the time it's not pure Hawaiian. Alot of people local to Hawaii speak Pighin (you pronounce it like pigeon.) It's like English accept broken, you can't teach it to someone they need to pick it up over the years. We are VERY family oriented and love each other very much (sometimes😂.) But most importantly THE FOOD! We love food here and bond with family over it. I would really recommend you try Lau Lau (don't eat the leaves on the outside), poké (you say it with a short e, it's not poke or pokey),and kalua pig(it's pork, but cooked underground to make it more savory and don't worry it's totally clean.) And just a quick tip, if you really want to capture the beauty of Hawaii try to stay away from tourist traps and go more to the nature side of things and take a hike or go to plantation tours if you want to see the history and beauty that Hawaii can offer. Thanks if you've read this long and Maunakea forever.
So true, I’ve lived in Hawaii my whole life and it’s really beautiful here.
Nora, my husband, daughter and I visited Hilo last month and our daughter insisted we visit your shop. You greeted us with your warm smile and platter of mochi samples. You were very generous and kind. We brought some and just loved the strawberry mochi. This video is beautifully done. We will visit your beautiful island and shop and buy a whole lot of mochi 💕 Do you mail to California? Thank you for the delicious mochi💕
I really love the way she speaks.. Has anyone else noticed it? Like a real mature lady... Elegant as well as experienced.
New year’s wouldn’t be the same without the neighbors sending my parents platters of delicious Michigan! Yummy!!!
Mochi IS love!!
Spread the word. Mochi is Love!
Mochi IS LIFE
豫凱 never had mochi :/ now I want some really bad

So creative. I like how she said that the colors of Hawaii inspired all of her colorful mochi.
WOW 25 years already!! We love you ❤❤❤
2:16 actually isnt that called an ichigo daifuku in japan? i LOVED it so much. the sourness of the strawberry and the sweetness of the azuki beans... AND THE CHEWY MOCHI. LIFE IS GREAT.
"Two Ladies Kitchen" is must try place to eat in Hilo. I promise you won't disappointed. Make sure always buy extra to take home. 🤙
Mochi I love and those trays at 38 seconds makes me smile and now I know there’s different mochi out there god bless
She sounds so happy and passionate about what she does❤️

Shanlee oh whoops, Kauai here!

I would literally fly over there to get that mochi💕
My Grandmother is also from Japan and seeing this made me tear up and miss her and her mochi. I’ve now passed on this love of Japanese food and culture to my children, her great grandchildren.♥️
I wanna go to Hawaii this year for my birthday. Fingers crossed! I will for sure visit your shop! So much history, cultural, and to top it off so natural to your surroundings.
I love it! Blessings.

Every time my dad goes to Big Island for work he brings back this mochi! i love it so much!♥️
For some reason, this story makes me so tearful. I love my grandma too, more than anyone who has ever lived in this planet. I missed her a lot especially the food she used to make me everytime i go home from school. If I could have even a minute more with my grandma I'll be the happiest girl in the world. Missing her since 2015. :(
Would like to try it maybe a lemon or mint
日本の餅がハワイでも😭😭😭
嬉しい。今度行ったら食べよう(≧∇≦)
This is wonderful, this is one of the Best Great Big Stories so far!
Love this! And that young woman at the back of the group in the last shot, with flowers in her hair: Gorgeous!!
Nice impressive, I want to try some.
It’s always weird when you are from the places these videos are about because to me it just like “oh yeah mochi” but everyone else is like “I NEED PLANE TICKETS NOW!”
Watching this under quarantine. What a treat. I hope this sweet and lovely lady and her parents are well.
Always love seeing people with their passion ♡
I would love to try it.
PopukoLemon * it is so good!! You can try to make it but it will never be the same
Jai Ceraso I'm not a professional, so im prefer something straight from the shop like this one. She make really different kind of mochi.
their mochi is fresh and the softest I've ever had.
Butter mochi is amazing!
I keep watching this video over and over again just because it's so satisfying with the sweet music and the squishy mochi :D
Love her story, grateful that she honour her parents and elders by continuing the tradition 😘
Why am I just finding this video when I just got home from Hawaii 😭😪😂
Her: "I never say no to someone's suggestion."
Random Kid: I want mochi that tastes like magical unicorns dancing on rainbows wearing fedora and gloves.
Her: ...
If someone actually asked that, she would probably make a really sweet mochi
I imagine a very sweet rainbow mochi with strange decorations such as mini fedora,a horn and Gloves..
Imagine she added horse meat in it
This was a really lovely video and story. Love the editing, and the subject. I smiled throughout the whole video. Heartwarming and uplifting. She's so sweet and pleasant - and pretty, too!
Wow. This made me cry. My uncle lived in Hilo and worked at the local high school. He took me here to try the mochi and it was amazing. He has since passed away.

mochi is so so nice. . . i used to hate it at first but then i gave it another try! i especially LOVE mochi w/ fresh fruit
