    I saw Norm at Bradley bowl in Windsor Locks Ct during qualify matches back in the early 90's, he left a ball on the rack when you was leaving. I reminded him, he went back and got it and gave it to me. Blue Columbia Gold Dot. Thank you Norm !

    Jesus I started watching bowling back in like 1974. Not sure why I don't remember this, but I have watched this entire thing 4 times in a couple days. I cannot believe the poise from an 18 year old kid, to roll thru that field like that. Can u imagine starting out as a kid, on TV, against Earl Anthony? That was really a remarkable performance.

    I was personally traumatized during that 4 minute stretch where I didn't get updated as to what Norm Duke's height and weight are and whether or not he'd ever won a title.

      And the part that makes even less sense is that bowling even at this time was always bragging about how it was for young and old, men, women, kids and any size & shape. So why continually throw the physical stats up? Must have been a template for boxing or football and they just recycled it lol.

    This was the first PBA event I remember watching. My mother had taped it for me even though I was barely old enough to understand what was happening (I was 4 1/2 when this aired). The USFL ad scared the daylights out of me and still does. But it was also my first exposure to the late, great Chris Schenkel. He and Nelson Burton, Jr. made the PBA Tour a Saturday afternoon ritual for me in the '80s.
    Suffice it to say I want those days back.

      Sometimes they did it just to take a little breather before a critical shot. I think I might like to do it, if it was dead quiet at a needed shot, to have the pin setter make some noise, so I don’t hear my own heart pounding out of my chest!

  • @planetx1595
    @planetx1595 10 років тому +1

    Something I'm not getting, the scoreboard at 45:48 shows that the one on the top lost by 2 pins, but on the ninth frame the bottom one shows it only managed to get 9 pins, shouldn't the score read 176 to 175? As the previous frames and the tenth are identical?

    • @22neohenry
      @22neohenry 10 років тому

      the difference in pins is counted twice, a strike followed by 8- gets 18 for the 8th frame and then 8 for the 9th. 18+8=26. A strike followed by 8,1 gets 19 for the the 8th frame and 9 for the 9th. 19+9=28

    That is not easy going through 4 professionals, especially one being Earl Anthony to win your 1st tournament. And do it at only 18 years old. Norm Duke is an all-time great in the sport. Steve Cook lost but he is still a winner. Candi Cook is gorgeous and two of their beautiful children were with her. It was just not a lefty day. Thanks for the video.

    Earl the king of finesse, with synthetic lanes and oil patterns changing along comes the power bowlers with ultra high revolutions reducing any chance for the finesse bowler to stay on top. The reason being specific torch with certain oil patterns allow a very large forgiveness area to throw the bowl for the power bowler and not the finesse bowler. Synthetic lanes were introduced in the late 70's but it took a while to figure out bowling styles, oil patterns and ball materials to use. Wood lanes accuracy was king and high average, synthetic lanes with in a very short time went to the high torch bowlers.

    Steve Cook's wife (red shirt, black hair, sitting 10 feet directly behind the bowlers), somehow thought it was a good idea to bring their 2 small children to the match when a nursery is provided for the player's wives. It had to be a distraction, especially during the Duke/Anthony match.

    Classic show, Norm's first show, the perfect style of Earl. It must be said that Schenk is the worst commentator of all time! So it goes! Thanks for posting.

      I hated Stones hambone. First, he seemed more concern about getting it out and 9 times out of 10 if he mentioned it the bowler wouldn't get it. Second, he thought that he invented it and he didn't. The USBC used to award junior bowlers a hambone award when they bowled two strikes in a row. I'm glad he went back to soccer.

      katanakeith wish he had stuck with soccer. He was like Chris Schenkel ... zero knowledge of our sport. Schenkel was the WORST ... In his 18 years of draining 100,000's of thousands of dollars from the bowling economy, I never heard him mutter an intelligent comment about bowling. My favorite ... after 12 years of commentating ... "another booming strike" ... Brooklyn!!

      @@ringing7 SMH...that's why Nelson Burton Jr. was there. Tell you what, why don't you go dig Mr. Schenkel up and tell him to his face? I'm sure he'll enjoy your insight after so many years.
