Tbh rand was the only one with mat and he knew how tough it was for him. Being cursed and all. Rand is a true homie. So u can't blame rand for being defensive of mat. And also he has known for a while that he is the dragon and it would have scared him a lot. His mental state is not stable. This man should get a break.
@@user-fy7ri8gu8l Yeah, after seeing show watchers commenting about the DR through the episodes, the show really didn't make it clear what it means to actually being it and most just take him as the "hero". Even "just" being a male channeler is bad enough, if i was him i would be way worse than whiny.
They also should have used the dreams more, they only showed like 3 of them and they were mostly jumpscares. I would have liked to see a certain someone talk to the kids at least a little.
As a book reader, I can’t wait to see your reaction to how these characters and relationships evolve over 14 books. It’s going to be a roller coaster, assuming the show holds up that long.

It's interesting to go back and watch this episode, and actually all the episodes, knowing that Rand is coming to terms with finding out that he's adopted, slowly realizing that he's actually the Dragon, and also starting to be affected by the madness that infects all men who touch the One Power. You'll pick up a lot more and understand his behavior better.
I love the rewatchability.
Yeah, it explains a lot of his personality, because has been dealing with it for the entire series. As a book reader, I love how they played "who is the dragon" with the audience. It keeps things interesting.

I bout fell out the chair when she did.
So Rand found out in episode 1... that the man he's always thought was his father literally *found him*. Tam doesn't even know his birth mother's name. So Rand's entire life is a lie, his fiancee told him after their first time (allegedly) that she was becoming a Wisdom which meant no marriage, and THEN she's going to be an Aes Sedai which ALSO rarely have families. Perrin was recently married, and Mat... Mat's been doing stuff that Rand is trying to avoid thinking about. His other friends are splitting off into their own lives and he can't follow.
Rand is basically losing everything he's ever wanted or believed in... and then he starts channeling. He went from having a happy future to having an uncertain one to one of guaranteed madness and a horrible wasting death at the end. And to top it all off, one of his best friends might be in love with Egwene. He's had a VERY rough month.
Thank you. The Rand hate I'm seeing from non-readers has me more than a little miffed at the show, as well as they are handling some other things.
(Tigraine cold open is probably my favorite sequence thus far.)
Even seeing some viewers say they hoped the Dragon would be one of the women just demonstrates that the show has not made sufficiently clear either the mirrored gender politics of this world, or the true horror of being the Dragon. Hopefully they do better with this in the future.
I agree so hard with both of you. It is just so irritating and annoying this complete lack of empathy and, about the show, the complete lack of what exactly means being a DR

Nynaeve isn't tightening her braid, she is tugging on it. It's one of those little running themes throughout the series. She gets angry or frustrated and she tugs on her braid. It happens a lot, as you can imagine.
The visual implication was there that she was in the process of tightening her braid from it being loosened when she had sex with Lan. She had put her clothes back on and redone her hair. She is shown tugging on her braid, specifically, after she accidentally blurted out that Perrin has a thing for Egwene. She did the braid tug when everyone scattered after the confrontation.
The Nyneave Lan romantic scene is the only romantic scene that ever brought tears of joy to my eyes. BTW long time WOT reader. Thanks for your videos, I'm a big fan!

The story behind Rands mom will probably not be given all at once. It will be a slow burn.
The Heron (not a crane) is the mark of a Blademaster. If you thought Rand's mom was a badass, wait til you see a Blademaster fight.
(Being a Blademaster is extremely rare.)
I really really *really* loved the Blademaster fights in the books, once you heard two people with Heron-marked blades were about to tussle, you knew you were in for a treat and a half. XD

I've read the entire series, so it's wonderful seeing the reactions from a newcomer. There were a few interesting foreshadowing and reveals going on beyond the obvious ones, but you'd really have to sit down and think through how some of the stuff in this world works. I love how you had to pour a little more drink for that Nynaeve and Lan scene. There are quite a few ride or die badass power couples in Wheel of Time, but those two are the _most_ ride or die. Mat made his choice, it is what it is. One of the cool aspects of this series is how the heroes have their own paths, and (as this episode demonstrates) they don't always agree. Perrin gets a rough start, but... Well, you'll see. As for Rand... Think back to how using the power made Logain crazy; it's tainted for men. Rand's lowkey had access to it this entire time, and he's figured out that he's this chosen one destined to save or destroy the world, that he's being hunted by the ultimate evil, and that he'll probably go insane from the power. A month before all this, he was just some farm kid. No wonder he's unstable. It's just a matter of what he chooses to do... Now, just sit back and take a breath. You've made it to the quiet moment before the finale, when things _start_ getting crazy.
The cold open was a perfect introduction for the Far Dareis Mai. One Far Dareis Mai in labor can take on several trained soldiers at once
Yup, the Spearmaidens, or Maidens of the Spear, are bad ass, don't get me wrong, the male Aiel fighters are real dangerous too, but the Spearmaidens are something else.

Ok! I have to say this. I totally get why non of the non readers like Rand. But here is my thought.
The poor naive kid got the shock of his life on Bel Tine when his dad in a fevert state blurted out that he was adopted. Before he could get answers he had to leave. As the journey continued he never got answers at any point. Probably flet ditched, scared, hounded by all dreams, had to deal with crazy Mat and take care of him. Probr freaked out when Thom said the whole Owyn story and saw how Logain was treated. Didn't know whom to talk to about this, and so tried some research at a library which probably made him more confused.
The whole darkness in him dialogue from Moiraine and God knows what all Machin Shin told him scared him.even more. And the. Moiraine says the others will die if they are not the dragon. Freaking the hell out he lashed at everyone. Especially must have hit a mark when a part of him worried how Egwene would see him once his ability to channel becomes common knowledge.
Have to remember he said, or rather insisted that 'No matter what happens Egwene has to go to the white tower'. Sure that he was just saying something to pacify her when he said he would become her warder. He knows he can't go to the white tower. Finally to save his friends he took a gamble on Moiraine who he is probably more scared off than anything else.
You're so funny & your assumptions are so right that you sometimes dont know how right you are seasons away but won't say anything 🤫🤣 , and dont worry because all will be explained even if you have to wait for other seasons.
YES he is the dragon......when you read the books you kinda know from early on they just dis it like this to keep non book readers guessing ...the crane on the sword = a sword master his father left the two rivers to fight in the war and become the captain of an elite group of soldiers...hence why he was there

first of all, I love your reactions so much! you're hilarious :) One thing: The dragon is not necessarily a person who helps the world, outside of fighting the dark one. The show hasn't gone into that very much, I assume they will in the next season! But the Dragon is one of the most feared people ever to exist, and it is basically a death sentence to be the dragon. I wish they had explained this a little in the show, so it would have been more apparent. Anyways, keep it up you're awesome

They are not in Malkier. They’re in a country that bordered Malkier, but the Blight overtook the country when Lan was a baby.
Except Rand WAS supportive. Even when she chose to leave him for a job, he was still supportive. Despite the fact that they were supposed to get married one day and have a family, she chose to leave him. And then, the second Nyneave "died" and she "lost" that job opportunity, she came back as if nothing changed. She expected him to welcome her back with open arms. That's why he's pissed. I'm sorry but I'm with Rand here. You can't just leave me for a job and then come back to me cause you can't get that job anymore.
No offense, but I don't get why you hate him so much.
Because he takes his anger out on Morriane and the group. He can be mad at Egwene all he wants, but when he starts to get in the way of decisions JUST to do the opposite of what Morriane says because he now blames her for Egwene's decisions....it becomes a problem for me.
@@ManicMeeks when he acts out its the side effects of the madness. Remember that all men that channel eventually lose themselves to the madness. One way of know is the fits of anger that he displays when things aren't going his way.

Rand's dad, Tam, is from Emond's Field in the Two Rivers but, he fought in that war for the country of Illian. Not going into the particulars because of spoilers
There's some interesting things and details coming in ep 8. More backstory. The heron mark Blade is given to sword masters, and Rands dad for it by serving in the army during the Aiel War. You'll love the lore, and hopefully will want to make a start on the books after this.

The heron mark on a sword denotes a blademaster, the highest level of skill. It's a fair warning to any challengers. You can only get one by killing another blademaster, or by having a group of blademasters bestow the title on you.

I want the final episode to open with a certain moment from the prequel, New Spring. They already mentioned it in passing. It would hit so extremely hard after this cold open and episode. BUT! It might be better reserved for later.
Still, it was a very good episode and they did rather well this season so far.

Rand needs to stop treating Mat like he's some broken thing that always needs fixing and looking after.
I knew Perrin was in love with Egwene from episode 1. From the fact that he didn't want to leave before speaking to her after her Wisdom test. Then he went home and was trying to convince his wife that he only loves her; and Laila knew too, that's why she didn't go to the Tavern to celebrate Egwene that night. Not to mention why Nynaeve was impressing on Perrin to go home to his wife...
Nothing can stop this big smile on my face from the Nynaeve and Lan INTERACTIONS this episode 😛❤. Meeks, you and I reacted the SAME WAY😆 Our ship sailed... Such a Fantastic episode. Can't wait for next week's.
Rand is not only worried about Mat but also about himself. He has been internalizing everything Moiraine said about the darkness in Mat, and what he learned about men who can channel from Thom and Logain. He knew something was wrong with him all along but he was in denial all the time, and he is scared his friends are going to leave him once they discover what he is.
wow you clocked it early i was feeling some chemistry after everybody got split up and it was just them two but i had to go back and rewatch that first episode to see all that

Book Rand has all the sass and more of show Rand, without the bitching. He does have a problem wanting to protect others, even if they don't want it, but he doesn't try to hurt them like show Rand intentionally hurt Eqwene. And first impressions of him are hurt because they delayed the scene with his father.

It's a heron on the sword, not a crane. Min refers to it as a "heron marked sword". It is the sign of a true swordmaster.

I know there's going to be book readers who will be p***ed about this happening so early and not like in.. oh I don't remember, I think it's book 7 or 8 after a loooooooooooooooong time of the two manoeuvring around each other for ages.
It's *The Lord of the Seven Towers of Malkier* and *The Wisdom of the Two Rivers* I'm talking about of course.
Perrin, oooooh well...oh, no spoilers, sry, gotta shut up ;).
The only thing I as a book reader hated is the Blight... in my opinion (and Jordan`s) it should be poisonous bleak land... It's almost described like I'd picture something "Post Nuclear".
I honestly think that the first season is going to be the one that catches the most FlaK for a simple reason: it desperately *needs* to change "The Eye of the World" significantly because the book is essentially a take on *The Fellowship of the Ring* because of matters that have to do with The Wheel and how it relates to the notion of circular events on the "in-Universe" level (ever read Marx on Napoleon III? => in *The Eighteenth Brumaire of Louis Napoleon* he states that events in history repeat, first as a tragedy, then as a farce ;) ) and as a statement on how to do the whole "chosen-one-quest" plot realistically.
From here on out it will be different.

I find Rand very annoying and I’m thoroughly enjoying this show so much.
Like because you are a great Halo gamer. But I am a little upset about the lack of empathy about Rand's behaviour. But it's not enterily your fault: being a feared DR it is a curse, not a prize.
... Odd definition of peace. That fight could have lead to them killing eachother xD
Also, I don't understand how people are hyped for any of the romance in this series. They somehow manage to be even worse portraying emotional bonds than the book author, and he was pretty shit at writing romance.
I'm going to be honest, your enjoyment of the series is going to be largely dependent on your ability to empathize with Rand, because he is the hero of the story.
