    It is really impressive of Bose to make a mono speaker which as both clarity and punchy upper Bass that sounds deep. Even JBL couldn't do something like that with the Charge 4 and flip 5.

      Indeed. I’ve compared to other similar sized BT speakers that are supposed to be stereo and they don’t sound as good as this one. I also have a second Flex and do stereo pairing. When I go back to just the one speaker it still sounds quite nice and spacious.

      @@Sergei__vthat's where Bose excel. Tiny speakers, perfectly tuned to get a sound frequency/volume level closely matched to much larger enclosures.
      Not always the best sound, but for compact speakers in (cheap) plastic bodyshells, which they sadly, then charge a lot of $$$ for.
      I auditioned a surround sound system with 3" cube satellites & the soundspace was unbelievable for tiny boxes, little larger than engagement ring boxes. Almost invisible. But oh boy the $$$
      I passed...

    One of my favorite things to do with these little Bluetooth speakers: set the driver on the table upside down and see how much it jumps around. Unlike a large driver, the lightweight and powerful neodymium magnet on these seems to actually provide some thrust! They’re also extremely overbuilt drivers that are quite hard to damage this way.
    I remember doing this on my original 1st generation JBL charge back in the day and laughing.
    This seems engineered way better than that one was. Same with the modern JBL Charge 5. Both are way better than most speakers were back then. Honestly with the Flex, Bose is finally back to the standards they set with the original Bose Soundlink mini. Flex really is the only Bose product that’s worth the price IMO. Really makes you realize how far ahead of its time the original mini from a decade ago was.

    Those screws are so long because the case is plastic. All the vibrations will eventually wear out the plastic that holds the speaker in place, and the screws help make sure it'll be a long time before things start resonating.

    Thanks for the tear-down, the rest of us would be highly reluctant to do this... 😱 Despite being mono, from everything I've researched, the Flex sounds even better than my Bose Soundlink mini 1, so Bose have done a superb job for also keeping the size, form factor and cost in a comparable range. That full range driver in the Flex must have some real engineering chops in it.

    Awesome video!
    Brought mine to the beach, dropped out of my hand and fell into the sand, got some sand in the holes of the grill, got most of it out, but couldn’t figure why the sand didn’t come out of the holes in the lower part of the front grill. Now I know why, the double sided glue strip holding the grill to the housing continues about 2-3 rows of holes up, and sand will definitely stick to that. Not sure if it’s worth opening it up, it’s a small eye sore, but doesn’t have any effect of the sound itself (that I know of).

    Long screws and soldered connections just ensure that nothing will ever come loose and vibrate. The thing is built like a tank.
    Something about its mono sound sounds off to me though. Sometimes, I'm not convinced I'm hearing the audio information from both combined recorded channels. People say they hear things in their music they never heard before...but if you take half of the music away, of course you'll notice what remains easier. Other than that though, I love my Flex! @@shaktastik Yes, when 2 flexes are paired in stereo mode the result is a very noticeable upgrade. I used to have a pair of Soundcore Motion+ which, on paper, could be linked to perform in stereo. It worked but had a regular tendency to lose the link for about 1 second between speakers, which made them unacceptable for my intended usage. So I sold those and bought the flexes. Only bought them a few weeks ago. Not disappointed so far.

      Double passive radiators work as bass reflex vent but in a small cabinet. They reproduce low frequencies main driver can not deliver with much level. Besides that, main driver is prevented from playing on passive radiators frequency range. Main driver excursion is lowered and thus its behavior is vastly improved. The only downside is delay at low end. But for such small speakers, it is not a concern.

    • @dwdrum11
      @dwdrum11 2 роки тому +13

      When the enclosure screws were tightened along with the driver screws the whole cabinet becomes sealed. The fart noise you heard prior is air escaping (air created by the speaker movement) so once sealed the passive radiators then begin to absorb the sound pressure waves, this causes them to radiate sound (ie etc like a speaker cone).

    I bought this speaker at Costco which is the soundlink flex SE it’s the same thing as the regular flex but only minor drawback is it doesn’t have a built in mic. It’s a Costco exclusive. Anyways I was stun by the sound it has excellent mid range and good extension of the bass plus the clarity of the Highs are excellent. I’m an audiophile I’ve owned all sorts of speakers out there from high end B&W, Sonus Faber, Vienna acoustics and even some klipsch, Polk, JBL, definite technology etc. I’ve had setups from 2 channel to home theater. So my expectations are quite high. This speaker does the job very well but I find out at higher volumes the bass starts to die down. It’s more of a near field type speakers and the bass won’t fill the larger room but the highs will. I’ve owned the home 500 from Bose and that one sounds a whole lot better and it’s amazing how small little drivers can put out such deep bass. I decided to do a tear down and found out there’s tube style tunnels inside that thing which improve the bass. The sound flex is awesome but not for the money.
    Here’s why. People will hate me for this but the Anker Soundcore flex 2 sounds as good, while it doesn’t play as loud it has the same clarity and even better bass. Wanna know how much? 60 bucks at the Verizon store.

    16:16 this is the moment where I start to wonder how these passive radiators work. I mean yes, the generell concept is clear. But in my understanding, front facing passive radiators swing out of phase with the speaker. They extend once the speaker retracts. So they show the opposite movement to the drivers membrane which should eliminate the impulse created by the driver. But instead, they inrease volume and sound... That doesn't add up..
    Anyone who has more understanding of this and could explain what I don't see here?

      Think of the way a port works. The back of the speaker pushes air through the port. The port amplifies the bass when balanced properly. In a closed scenario the speaker is pushing pressure in to a closed space. Add 2 radiators opposing one another and weighted properly it is just moving more air to exaggerate the low end. I don’t know if there is really any phasing per say because there is no polarity just low frequency energy be exaggerated. Just my observation.

      @@bsbarber73 Ah yea adding different masses to the chassis might do the trick. Anyways, very interesting concept

    • @Roelypopper
      @Roelypopper Рік тому +3

      the system of the active driver and the passive radiator is damped by the mass of the air in the speaker and the mass of the passive radiator. This causes some 'lag' in the movement of the passive side, kind of how a mass on a spring doesnt react instantly when u pull on the end of the spring. This behaviour causes most of the important bass frequencies to become constructively added to the sound by the passive radiator, i.e. they move in and out in the SAME direction!

    Hi. I was having a great experience with it but suddenly it keeps turning off whenever I try to play something a little loud. This had never happened before (it’s a little more than a year old). I think it is also not charging properly; once it turns off, it does not turn on unless I put it on charge again. Can somewhere tell me what is happening, and is there a way to repair it? I took it to the local authorised Bose store, and they said they can only replace it (and it’s not in warranty anymore). Please help!
