I feel like bagging Leclerc for one mistake and putting him P3 then mentioning 2 of George's mistakes and giving him P2 seems unfair and it still remains that Mercedes can't get on the podium if either Ferrari or Red Bull don't have a problem

    • @TheVurtigo
      @TheVurtigo 2 роки тому +5

it's a fine margin either way you look at it, however I can understand why he has gone for his respective ratings. Both of Georges incidents were more severe than Leclerc's single incident, but are also kind of hard to judge him too harshly on. When Perez went round the outside of him in Austria, you can see his car become unsettled over the curb and thus understeers into Perez. Similarly when he closed the gap on Gasly too late, he couldn't/ didn't see Gasly in his mirror, don't get me wrong, it was a horrific crash that could have been avoided if a slight bit more care was taken, but at the same time, leaving the start line is one of the most stressful parts of the whole race for a lot of the drivers. Leclerc however was quite a length into his stint at Imola, and although he was pushing hard to catch up to Perez, he has come out and said himself that the spin was caused due to being too 'greedy'. Leclerc's spin was WAY more avoidable than the incidents with George, had he just approached the corner taking less of the sausage curb. You could make the argument that 'George could've avoided curb going into the corner as well', but he was under tremendous pressure being lap 1, and really it would've been an incredibly minor mistake had Perez not been on the outside, He may have run a little wide, but wasn't going to be anywhere near putting himself into the wall or sand trap.
Then when you go on to compare that this is George's first year with mercedes (minus the one race at Bahrain), managing p5 or higher every race for the first 9 races in a car that looked like a boat to drive, especially in the first few races of the season, as WELL as the incredible battle between him and Max at Spain, I think he is well deserving of P2. I think Charles statistically looks a lot better on paper, but his mistake seemed so amateur spinning at Imola, and he was lucky to not be DNF'd given how hard he went into the wall. As I said, it's such a fine margin between the two of them that it was always going to be difficult to choose who should be above who, and at the end of the day, it's all personal opinion. I think they are both great drivers and I'm excited to see them battling for a few years to come.

Lewis Hamilton was looking unstoppable last season compared to Bottas and Russell has been fighting with Hamilton if not besting him very regularly. Lewis has had bad luck so without that bad luck maybe Hamilton would be ahead of Russell in points but in terms of perfect driving Russell has been outperforming Leclerc relative to where their teams and cars are at. Verstappen has been flawless, only losing out in austria due to the team going the wrong way with development and car failiures. 4 races where Leclerc lost a lead because of his team (3 were almost guaranteed wins)
    1) Barcelona, 15 seconds ahead comfortably after putting it on pole when he retired
    2) Monaco, two tragic pit stop mistakes lost him the lead after putting it on pole and put him all the way down to fourth
    3) Baku, DNF from lead again (this is the one where I don't know if he would have won bc RB was on a different strategy and looked to have better pace, but VSC may have helped him.)
    4) Silverstone, was leading and had the best pace on hards despite having a broken front wing the ENTIRE race and Ferrari did not pit him, fought well but ultimately did not even finish on podium, all three cars with softs overtook him.
(plus there is Canada ofc which was a write off from the start bc of engine penalties, though still great recovery overall)
Max has had two DNFs to be fair, but they were both from P2, and the Silverstone issue didn't hurt him as much in the championship bc Ferrari also fucked up with Leclerc.
Even with his mistake in Imola, Leclerc has on average been the best driver this season imo, but it's hard to win a championship when it seems like your own team is competing against you!

Lewis has definitely looked like he has got back on it in the last few races and in my opinion he has looked a lot more likely to score that win that mercedes are eluded this season.

Vettel has been done dirty by the voters. Don't understand how he isn't at least a 7/10 for consistently scoring points and making Q3 in the 9th best car on the grid.
Secondly, Gasly has more points and a better qualifying record than Tsunoda who's also made the two most embarrassing blunders of the season in Canada and Silverstone. There is no way he should have a lower score than Yuki.
And I'm sorry Tommo but Leclerc below Russell is a howler from you.

I really think we've been "wronged" by a few things happening at mercedes this year to consider the level of George :
IF it is true that Lewis had to take every set up gambles in the first 5/6 races
We can say the Mercedes is comfortably the 3rd car on the track, way ahead of P4 and way down P2 (less and less though)
Therefore, for George to be P5 in almost every race is just ... Expected... ? Considering we've had at least one retirement from the top 2 teams every race so far or so (I know I'm writing this later, after the start of the summer break) and his car allows him pretty much only to battle his team mate (or Ferrari when they don't want to win the championship), than all George had to do this season is finishing the race, and boom, P5...

Then being unlucky in qualy everytime, Imola box problem, Miami, Silverstone, Monaco Ocon was faster then Fernando in every sector fighting Norris for P5. Alonso crash into the wall by another drivers mistake, no one talk about it because Perez Red Flag cover him. When Ocon could be P6 behind Norris like in Q2!
Alonso who get all the glory for Monaco and everybody thinks that Alonso was faster, that's wasn't the case.
Again at Baku, Ocon was faster in Qualifying and Alonso goes into Q2 by blocking everyone. Again Ocon should have finish ahead of Alonso by 1-2tenths like Monaco, but no, Yellow flag, Alonso got lucky to keep his grid position one more time and can be ahead of the McLaren when Ocon have to defend and lose time with Hamilton/Vettel/Tsunoda, still everybody thinking Alonso was faster in qualifying.
Just because Ocon never complain or create drama saying how is so unlycky and could have score more point by starting P6 instead of P10, He lose 8points that day, that's how luck works...

No problem in Austria and when Alonso did a driving mistakes, Ocon get P6 behind Russell like in Djeddah.

The truth is that he can only get performance out of the car over one lap where job points are on offer which is also why Ocon is higher in the standings because he knows when the points are handed out and gets the most available to him on any given day.

As a Mick fan, I think you've been fair on Mick. Indeed, you have to take the season as a whole, and without the good showings in Canada, Silverstone and Austria, Mick would have probably been ranked next to last in performance. I believe that this recent improvement will continue - as it has happened at the middle of his second season in the series, which has always been the trend with Mick, so maybe by the end of the year we can rank him even higher. But for right now, I feel your ranking was spot on.

Tbh I’d rate Vettel’s performances this year close to Alonso.
I’d still rate Alonso higher just because he is 41 while Vettel is only 35 but Alonso also has way better machinery available.
I’d give P8 to Seb and P5 or 6 to Alonso.
When these two will retire, F1 will lose a pretty big chunk of talent, despite them being fairly old
Other than that, I agree with you 100%.

Ricciardo has not been that bad this year:
Bahrain: Finished ahead of Lando in race but struggled in quali. Quite good result considering he missed the Bahrain preseason testing and Lando got a huge advantage from that
Saudi Arabia: Qualified right behind Lando. Team didn’t inform him of approaching cars leading to a 3 place penalty. In the race he was ahead of Lando, until his car broke down.
Imola: Was outqualified by Lando, however, he never got that final Q3 lap in. Everytime they completed a lap they jumped the other driver in that quali so as Lando did the last lap of the two he qualified better. In the race, a small bit of oversteer ended his race.
Australia: Was pretty much on par with Lando and didn’t pass him on the final lap because Lando had an issue and it was team orders. Lando was quicker on the second stint, but Ricciardo was quicker in the first and was being held up by Lando.
Miami: The team couldn’t start up his car so for his final qualifying run in Q2 he didn’t have enough time to make it to the flag without pushing hard, ruining his final Q2 lap.
Spain: Was lucky to out qualify Lando as Lando had his time deleted. The race was poor as he was slow, however, McLaren did confirm there was an issue with his car.
Monaco: In FP1 he was on par with Lando maybe even slightly quicker, then crash in FP2, which McLaren took the blame for. That ruined his whole weekend as he was behind. The race wasn’t great from where he qualified, however he should of done much better in Q2.
Baku: Qualified right behind Lando. Was quicker in the first stint but team orders to hold position left Ricciardo vulnerable as he was losing time and was overtaken. Lando’s overcut failed (which is why they let Lando stay ahead) and Ricciardo came out ahead of Lando when he pitted later. This time Lando was quicker (the hard tyre was just better) and team orders where returned. Ricciardo finished ahead of Lando. Note that when Ricciardo was issued team orders he didn’t complain but followed the direction while Lando behaved childish and immature. Additionally, analysis and extrapolation of the race determined that if Ricciardo had been allowed to overtake Norris he would have come out ahead of the pack of cars he got held up in when he pitted and thus would have finished a few spots higher.
Canada: Out qualified and finished higher than Lando. However, Lando had power issues. And yet again Ricciardo had car issues meaning he had to lift and coast. Not to mention Mclaren’s straight line speed meant he never had a chance of holding onto a points finish.
Silverstone: During Q2 he made a mistake on his lap and then the rain got heavier and no one could improve meaning he was out. In the race he could not use DRS for the second half of it and was also forced to make another stop which cost him 20secs. Multiple 4 second plus pit stops ensured Ricciardo came out in traffic and his undercuts failed. Not to mention the poor strategy and straight line speed.
Austria: Was told to hold position in the sprint. Qualified one place behind Lando. Lando had some sort of brake issue. In the race Lando was much faster. Ricciardo was given team orders at a point during the race but it really wouldn’t of made a difference. Still P9 finish.
The weekends that are relatively problem free for Ricciardo end up being weekends where Mclaren don’t have the pace to score points.
Conclusion: Ricciardo has been very close to Lando all season. Lando is better in qualifying and Ricciardo is typically a better racer than qualifier. Yes, he has had some poor weekends, but seriously he has not been as bad as people say. He has had nothing go his way this season and while Lando has also had issues he has had no where near as many as Ricciardo. Mclaren need to deliver a car capable of delivering desired outcomes for both of its drivers. And Ricciardo needs to deliver results. My point: don’t be so quick to condemn Ricciardo’s results. Poor results doesn’t always mean poor performances and/or a slow driver. There are quite clearly other factors at play.

Ofcourse the strategy is determined by the team, but Sainz has had the right strategic sense multiple times this season and actually rejecting their strategy earning him points and even a win. Leclerc just followed and got screwed by Ferarri.

Listen it’s all about opinions but here’s some of my issues with both lists:
    - Gasly being worse than Tsunoda makes no sense considering Gasly is still comfortably beating him. Gasly has had rough moments but come on, P18 is unfair
    - Mick and Zhou are way too high, recency bias is making people forget they’ve both comfortably been bottom 5 on the grid
    - Vettel P15 is a joke, he’s easily been at least 7/10 this season
    - Lando has been T5 this year, destroyed his teammate, best of the midfield and he hasn’t even had the fastest midfield car, consistent points finishes and only non RB/Ferrari/Merc driver on the podium
    - P5/P4 for Perez is too high for someone who if we’re real has still gotten dominated by his teammate, he genuinely hasn’t looked faster than Max at a single race bar Monaco and even that’s hard to judge
    - I’m sorry but I can’t see a single universe where Russell has had a better season than Leclerc. Leclerc, if you ignore luck, would at worst be within 10 points of Max Verstappen. Yes he spun at Imola, but Max spun in Spain and got lucky circumstances went his way. As for Russell, he’s made even more mistakes (Silverstone, Austria) and I don’t think he’s been faster than Hamilton overall, which is visible now that Lewis has stopped experimenting with setups. His consistency is nice but a lot of it has just been him putting the 3rd fastest car into P5-P6 where it belongs.
As I said, this is just me giving my opinion and I’m not trying to have a go at you, just disagree with a couple things

Great argumentation. I agree with most of the points: Only difference being your ranking of zhou. I think Tomo has made good points regarding his ranking: It is his rooky season and if we look at the last rooky seasons from other drivers, we have to admit that Zhous is one of the best (even taking Lando in 2019 into account, where he was stunning but beaten by Sainz, if you look at his level now against Ricardo who at the time was labelled a better driver than Sainz by most people, his rooky season seems like a bad one too), so it sets things into perspective how difficult the first year really is. If we look at race pace and wheel to wheel racing, I think Zhou is right up there with Bottas, even if you take the whole season into account. The difference between both is qualyfing where I think, Bottas is extremly underrated by most people. In my opinion he is one of the best qualyfiers on the grid. (I dont know the numbers, but as far as I remeber he was nearly always close to Lewis in Qualy, not so in the races, which says a lot) This criteria becomes more important when you are racing in the midfield rather than in front: If you outqualify your teammate by 5tens, but only are 2 places ahead of him when fighting at a front, you can still end up fighting with your teammate in the race, whereas in the midfield, you might be 5 or more positions up the grid and have a completly difference strategy than your teammate. This explains the difference in points between Bottas and Zhou in my opinion.
As a German, I really hoped that Schuhmacher would be the one to impress me most this season, but I have to admit that Zhou was stunning to me. Although Schuhmacher might be getting there later on, it is still too early to praise him for his recent performances.
Other than that, your critics to the video would have been the same for me: Charles definetly in front of George and at least very close to Max, Gasly better than Tsunoda, although still not in the upper half, Perez too high, and Lando still absolutly stunning this season.
Cheers mate, you know your stuff.
