I have actually just cut off a cutting near the base and stuck them in the ground and they grew beautifully. Sedum root’s amazingly. Don’t even need the rooting hormone. I have actually started 30 or more plants from an original Autumn Joy that was 30 years old.
This is true, all you have to do is stick it into some soil, and it's good to go.
Yes I agree they are very easy to propagate. But sometimes it's nice to show people lots of different ways to do it. I don't think of video of me shoving a piece of sedum in the ground would be all that interesting to watch 😂😂😂. Although that's pretty much what I did when showing propagation of Angelina Sedum
I wish everything was this easy to propagate. I’ve been spreading them all around my property which is helping to fill areas that only had grass growing.

I'd never had Sedum before moving to our current house three years ago. I LOVE the Sedum, it's beautiful, especially in Fall. But it was flopping open and that drove me crazy. I didn't know it needed dividing, so I put a peony ring around it last fall after I cut it back for winter. It grew this spring into the ring and is doing beautifully!

I’ve had my sedums for years & never thought about splitting them. The whole in the centre when they grew huge always upset me 😅
Now I will spilt them up, I have 3 spots in the garden of these plants & now I can spit them all up & plant around the garden elsewhere. Thanks for sharing 😊
Haha no problem. Sometimes they'll also flop when they are fertilized or the soil is too rich. They like really lean soil 😊

I successfully got an autumn Joy cutting to root and was excited when I realized the plant hadn’t shriveled. I did it incorrectly by not cutting off the blooms though but still worked!

of threes .... this way you can do it very cheaply. One thing about gardening I find, it pays
to be practical & patient.

Great video! I have taken cuttings of the ground cover sedum and sprinkled it into my garden and it just grows! It's so cool. I have white sedum and I am not a fan, it looks beautiful for about a week or so but turns brown very quickly. I chop off the heads and then place them into the soil and they make new plants.....super easy!

So glad to find this video!! I was going to attempt this method with my Autumn Joy and have only found how to propagate with the leaves you remove rather than the stem. (I have done the "oops, I broke off a stem and poked in the ground" method, it definitely works😆) Happy to find that I can get multiple starts off one stem as well! I have yellow bouquet, coral reef, and firecracker sedum. I have it planted it a tree circle. To help spread it, I pull a piece near the base with a few starter roots; then replant it in a bare spot. After a week or two, it starts rooting good on its own. Got to keep it damp. For fertilizer, I use Dr Earth 2-2-2. They don't need much. Too much they'll get leggy. 🍀🌿🌾🐀🐾
Yeah I never fertilize them. They really love yucky, poor soil

We just got a TON of rain here and I noticed my Autumn Joy Sedums (I have two HUGE ones in my front garden) flopped over! It's breaking my heart. So, now I know they need to be split but can I split them now? A week before fall? I don't want to run the risk of hurting them. I guess worse come to worse I can tie them up with burlap string?

Crappy soil lol. They don't like fertilizer and our drought tolerant once established. They thrive on neglect

Hi! I believe the flowers must have grown after it rooted. I usually cut the flowers off before rooting them.

Great video! One question, though. Can the leaves you removed be propagated individually as well? Will a leaf grow a “pup” or baby like some of my other succulents?
I have seen people do that. They pull the leaves off gently and try to get a tiny bit of the base of the leaf where it goes into the stem. It seems to work for some. Sedum is really easy to propagate.

Most sedum are hardy in zones 3-11

So we have two autumn joy plants. They are full and beautiful but taller than the tier above them. Can the be cut down? We don't want to lose the buds.
No, you will definitely lose the buds if you cut them. You can divide them in the fall after they bloom, or in the spring, though.

You can divide them pretty much any time. They are very hardy. I am in zone 6 and still haven't done it yet, no big deal 😊
Hi, I am so excited to have accidently found your very informative video on these beautiful flowers. We live in VA zone 7 and were cleaning up a home that hasn't had any outside attention in many years and discovered pots of these flowers thrown around the sides of the house. What is so amazing is how all these plants have adapted to the sun/shade they received for so many years and are still beautiful. So, I have a few questions in hopes you will respond. The text book says they belong in full sun. These plants have not been in full sun. If I had to guess it would be part sun and part shade for years. Should I keep these plants in these gross pots till next spring or should I start taking them out of these pots and transplanting them in the ground now? Our temperatures at night have taken a serious drop. Last night was 44 degrees. You are amazing and watching you gives me the courage to try and save these beautiful flowers. Thank you for all your help.
I have sedums that grow in anything from full sun to almost complete shade. They are very adaptable and difficult to kill. If you don't like the pots they are in, just move them to where you want them. They will adapt.
Thank you so much for your quick response. The containers are broken and worn out so I will attempt to get the compacted concrete heavy plants out of the pots and begin putting them into the ground now while we are in the fall of the year. Sure hope we can get some warm weather long enough for these plants to take root in their new beds. I bet these plants have been living in broken containers for over 15 years. I am amazed that they would continue to come back year after year in soil that is heavy and compacted as concrete. I could hardly pick a few of these containers up. @@PrettyPurpleDoor
It’s best to remove the flower heads to concentrate energy on forming roots.
Eh, sedum are so hardy it really doesn't matter in my opinion. For some plants yes, I agree.
Is there a reason why mine might be turning a lime green? I live in Oklahoma and we don't get that much rain and they are in a clay, with soil area.
There is a variety called lime zinger. Do you know what variety you have for sure?
Great help for others, but my experience with sedum autum joy is much different. Mine are about four times larger and have never flooped. You will have trouble if the soil is not right. Also, they like full sun. But even better they are deer resistant.
Most of mine are fine and don't flop. If you have rich soil or a lot of rain they will flop sometimes, though. I've never seen them 4x the size of mine... 8 feet wide?
Maybe mine are more established, they are huge and really dark green. and fuller.
My Autumn Joy are definitely NOT deer resistant - we are near a reservoir and those deer eat ANYTHING! Even rudbeckia! I’m going to try putting them somewhere else, maybe even a container. Love your video Amy and am looking forward to viewing more!!

I wonder if that is what's happened with mine. They didn't flop until the rain. They are about two years old, a good size and have done very well until all the rain. @@PrettyPurpleDoor

Not necessary to coddle sedum at all. They are very hardy and take care of themselves. Sometimes I think they prefer to be neglected

It doesn't. Plant it in the ground. Sedums are drought tolerant so they like good drainage. If you have poor drainage add compost to amend your soil.

It may be too late but it wouldn't hurt to try since it's free to do it. Look up your "first/last frost dates" on farmers almanac website and make sure you mark that down for next year.

When you say it should be actively growing how do I know that it is? Theres a sedum that’s still all green, is it not ready yet then? Until I see color? It’s august 10th, I’m not sure if that’s when they’re actively growing or still too early
Needs stalks with flowers on top. So if it's just a mound there isn't much to propagate from. And if the stalks are dead and brown, it won't work either. Does that make sense.
Do you buy from stores or best online vender ?

So sedum angelina could be in a short ditch in front yard so we don’t have to mow?
Sedums are drought tolerant /succulents so if the ditch fills with water it would not be a good option. Otherwise, yes

I'm sure you could, but there's really no point since they root so easily in the dirt with very little intervention on your part😊

Yes, fall is the perfect time for dividing! I also do it during other times of the year and give away to others because I have too many now!!! ✌️

Is it really necessary to remove the WHOLE PLANT of Autumn Joy sedum rather than cutting off sections all around and giving those away or replanting elsewhere?
I suppose you could dig around it but for me it's easier to pull it up and divide then put a small piece back into the hole. But if you are good with a spade I don't see why you cant do it your way. Just get a good chunk of roots for each division.
Honey works as well instead of rooting powder.
I have read that it works due to its antibacterial and antifungal properties however I've never tried it Plus rooting powder is way less sticky to deal with then rooting powder hahaha, if you have it on hand of course. Even if you don't have anything on hand you could still try propagating sedum. They are very easy plants.
