So true! Music is not universal at all, sometimes i feel weird listening to golden age hip hop for instance knowing that the meaning of it it's lost in the moment i listen to it out of the ghettos. I love it but i know i'll never understand it the same way. We could give plenty of other examples like this one. Thank you Terre
as i'm listening about these power structures... Their's boom boom pow on my related videos... My youtube knows that i don't fuck wit dat nu BEP lol.. It's there because it's "featrured"... It's featured because they payed for it...
Sounds pretty gatekeepy. House music should be about whatever the individual house producer wants it to be or whatever the listener gets out of it. If you say it's about transgender sex work, that's cool. I will listen to it with an open mind and like it or dislike it based on THE MUSIC.
I think Terre is emphasizing the context of which these genres arrive from. Especially considering music is cultural in its nature, calling music hyper specific is only paying homage to this culture that’s often erased through mainstream “world-music” I.e., in a very literal sense, what happened w Madonna
that's their entire argument, that it's not what you want it to be, it's something completely specific that got rebranded as this universal vibe thing in the early 2010s thanks to corporations, etc.
I was a fan of Terre's music for many years, especially his House-tracks, but I've never considered to play his music in my DJ-sets, although I've played very similar kind of music. The reason was that there was something "pessimistic" or "depressing" energy-wise in his music, even though House should be music to party and have fun to. I listened to this Red Bull talk maybe 5 years ago, and by then I had no understanding of the implications of the academic terms he was using. Now, though, listening to it again, I come to the conclusion that Terre was an early captive of the "Woke mind virus". He's been reading way too much "gender theory" and similar branches of Neo-Marxism, that unfortunately has done him no good. Sad on such a talented individual...
Not true, Terre was screwed very early on in the music industry and chose an alternative route to distribute music. It's also funny to think that house music has to be something to party or have fun to when much of their work fights against that. If it took you five years to not really get anything they're talking about then u missing the point big bruv
It took me five years to re-listen to this talk, yes, and the world has gone through a lot since then. You accidentally prove my point twice in this little fragment of a sentence: "...when much of their work fights against that". - First of all, Terre is not schizophrenic, Terre is an individual. One has to be terribly confused and ideologically possessed to casually call an individual "they/them". - Second, you write that Terre's work is a fight "against that". I'm not sure what you mean by "that", if it's "against the industry" or "against party music". Either way, making music "against something" is on my eyes so depressing, especially when you make dance music. And I suspect that's what I subconsciously felt when choosing not to play his music in my DJ-sets. It doesn't lift up the spirit, but the opposite. Finally: "House" stems from "Warehouse", a night club in Chicago. House originates from Disco. So yes, House is, per definition, party music, just like Ghanan Highlife and Caribbean Soca.

"house is not universal. house is hyper-specific"
is this why Terre's music isn't available basically anywhere except buying a used CD off discogs?

its always awkward when you ask a question at a forum cuz then you feel forced to be super attentive. aside from that, awesome answer
Haha I noticed how the camera was going back to the girl while Sprinkles spoke.
Terre is one of the finest mind alive. I don't share all of his opinion, but he's so fucking brilliant.
Damn nice answer.
thanks I love Terre
Well done Terre
"Music is contextual" ...might have been a more concise answer.
Nice
WHERE THE FUCK CAN I LISTEN TO SOULNESSNESS

we are the ones who are not "UNIVERSAL"...

Richard Dawkins produces house... YES

that's exactly what they're saying, is it not

@@travelmusic1113 house is political, Terre is great (them)
@@danieldiasgranados2311 I agree, Terre is a genius. Too bad he got caught up in the Neo-Marxist mind virus.
@@danieldiasgranados2311you don't know shit about original house music, and neither does this chin-stroking douchebag 😅
