Your voice has some star quality. You may have something there. You were born to sing. You also have the looks to pull it off.

Great vid, I liked it very much although one thing i disagree with is you saying not to use it on electric guitars. The 160A was a staple in the rack for the greatest session guitarists like Steve Lukather, Michael Landau or Dan HUff and others in the "80s

damn bro, was wondering how this DBX compressor and the Aston spirit microphone would sound together. Great minds think alike

Hey man, yeah if you or your subject have a voice that's suited with condenser microphones (mine's a bit more suited for an sm7b), the dbx 160 and Aston spirit are a great pairing. You just gotta make sure you're not slamming the vocals too hard, I find dbx on vox should just be to tame some peaks etc

Thanks man! I did this video a while ago, my chain at that time was Mic> GAP Pre73> Focusrite 18i20. I upgraded to an Apollo FireWire recently so that's all I use nowadays!

    Hi. Why not on guitars?

    • @simonaustin1136

Guitars typically don't need much compression, especially not for overdrive tones (because essentially distortion IS compression). Clean guitars can benefit from a bit of comp, but the dbx is a very punchy and snappy sounding compressor, much better suited for drums. For clean guitar compression you'd want something a bit more spongey and smooth sounding to balance pick attacks etc

What is more punchy for drums, this or a distressor? Looking to get my first comp

Both are great in a studio setting, dbx is more single purpose (ie. It'll do well on ur Kik or snare) whereas the distressor would sound good on anything, but is also best fitted for rooms/ overheads

@@simonaustin1136 I thought the distressor was mono? Also cant fins the dbx 160a anywhere so might get an art vla ii instead

@@whytewavestudios3039 I believe the dbx 160 is mono as well though, but yeah I think you're right as you would need a stereo pair of distressors for overheads
