Hey everyone! Join me as I watch RIO for the first time today! This movie surprised me in so many ways of how awesome it really is! The culture, the acting, and the animation are just a spectacle to look at!
Captured by smugglers when he was just a hatchling, a macaw named Blu (Lorànt Deutsch) never learned to fly but has a happy domesticated life in Minnesota with Linda (Élisabeth Ventura), who thinks he is the last of his breed.

The blue Macaws were a real species, the only ones that exist now are those in captivity 🙃 I always loved this movie, but knowing that fact just makes some of the messages more impactful
There is an actual ongoing project that attempts to return the Spix's Macaw into the wild, started before covid- collaboration between Germany and Brazil, there is first batch of I think 20 birds kept in a facility in Brazil to get used to living in nature/wild, and they should get released sometimes next year. #spixsAreComingHome is the official tag
(of course some shady dealings and suspicions are being thrown around this all, asking where they are getting the money etc)
I don't consider them truly extinct since they live in captivity, but its still kind of sad.

5:20 - Some captive birds actually never learn how to fly, and unfortunately I know this because my family has two parrots, and one of them hasn't got the chest/wing muscles for flight so he can't fly. The other flies like a bullet.

The views of the nature and the carnival are so beautiful.
This movie was based on actual critically endangered (two specimens left tho, usually land in the realm of extinction I think) birds. In reality, it didn’t end as well as this movie. The birds died so the species is fully extinct now. But, I appreciate the movie for bringing the plight of endangered animals more attention.
I still am disgusted at Disney for shutting this studio down.

Wild version is extinct not domesticated important to know they are not gone gone there are programs for them to be reintroduced into the wild and no I am not trying to be annoying just want to make sure people know that it is not too late for these birds.

I loved Rio when it first came out, the sequel wasn’t that good. But what do I know, you might like it. One of Blue Sky’s best movies.

This was one of my favourites childhood movies! I always remember the time where I always watched it while eating dinner, good old time. Also, love your reaction, Cody!
I can understand you being skeptical of "Exotic pets" because they take a lot of specialized care that not everyone researches or knows about. Any animal can be domesticated, but some take a lot more work than others because of their natural instincts. That's why the specialized care usually works around that. Exotic pets aren't usually the "I'm going to come up and cuddle you for attention" type, but they have their own ways to show love and affection. For example: Birds are each different, some are flock animals and others are loners outside mating season. When They show affection it's usually in the form of Preening or grooming those they like. My brother's bird has a personality closer to a cat. They won't let you pick them up but they'll come hang out with you when they want to.
I totally agree that wild animals should be left alone. It’s dangerous for you, everyone around you, and the animal.That’s why a lot of experts warn people to not have exotic pets like monkeys, tigers, foxes, etc.
Well unless your an expert and know how to care and train there's a chance it won't attack you I saw a family who has a pet crocodile or alligator I forgot and their baby literally climbs on it and plays with it
Jesus. This was one of my best childhood movies. The second wasn't the best but I still enjoyed it.
Like this movie brought to light the illegal pet trade which is a lot worse then many people think. If you're getting an exotic pet (espesially birds or reptiles) then do extensive amounts of home work and be 110% sure the animal is captive bred from a reliable sorce

should never get one in the first place. only if it’s a rescue and the owner works around animals and know what they’re doing.
I said do a lot of research, not just on where the animal came from but how to care for it. Obviously not every species can be cared for by the average person but the term "exotic pet" means anything not fully domesticated so things like rats, parakeets, and fish fall under that catagory
Reaction channels have been a weird niche for me to fall into but honestly this pandemic just has me craving friendship in the weirdest ways, humans aren't meant to be solitary. Unlike most people I do enjoy both movies, the songs on both are amazing, but I do prefer the songs on the second one, glad you chose to react to it!
It’s been a minute since I’ve watched Rio! Never saw it in the movie theaters but it’s a Blue Sky gem in my opinion. The best thing about this film to me is the soundtrack. I can’t help but get swept into the sick beats with each song, especially Nico and Pedro’s song (Hot Wings/I Wanna Party), my #1 favorite!
So yeah, a good, funny story, awesome songs, and a fun cast of characters in my overall opinion! Thanks so much for the reaction!

What about exotic pets that are domesticated like snakes and reptiles and certain birds? They aren't always caught from the wild. There are many breeders. Not hating or anything, just correcting that exotic animals can be pets as long as they are captive bred and raised. And aren't dangerous.

Cody, I was so excited for you to react to this movie! I live in Rio and this movie was HUGE here back when it premiered, and everyone here’s always really proud of how our culture got represented in it with things like Carnaval and etc. Carlos Saldanha, the Ice Age movies (from 1 to 3) and this movie’s director, is actually Brazilian himself! That’s why he made this movie. My old nanny used to work for him! He’s a really cool guy!

The blue macaw, in our native Portuguese, is called _arara azul._
That depiction of poverty is realistic. Keep in mind it's restricted to certain neighbourhoods in remote parts of the city.
The tamarins do steal our stuff all the time, just for the sake of it.
The statue is Christ the Redeemer atop Mount Corcovado; one of the Seven Modern Wonders of the World, and a UNESCO heritage site.
The purple trees are _quaresmeiras,_ that is, 'Lent trees'. They blossom around Lent in shades of purple.

I remember that this was the first DVD my uncle bought for me and my cousins before he left for Canada.

Honestly I remember Rio the most, I loved it and watched it when I was a kid, it made me feel a lot of things and honestly I don't care what people say it's a beautiful movie and it's just fun and entertains me till this day. In my opinion it's one of the best 3d animated movies I've ever watched, but that might be because it was one of my first 3d animated movies so it left a huge impact on me so yea I love it.
This is, without a doubt, the best Blue Sky film.
Well in my opinion at least
About that, the top five Blue Sky films without a doubt would be Ice Age 1, Robots, Rio 1, The Peanuts Movie and Spies In Disguise (the pigeon plot in that movie actually works). It’s debatable which of these 5 is best, some say Peanuts but I have reasons to disagree with that.
Rio 1 on the other hand is a film that gets better every time I rewatch it as I notice more and more details and how the elements of the film work. The sequel is quite the opposite for me Rio 2 gets worse every time I rewatch it, so forget that.
If I where to describe Rio 1 it say it’s a romantic comedy centred around the heart Rio De Janeiro (Home of Carlos Saldana). The film’s romance between a domestic bird and a wild bird is such a hilarious concept they make work so in a heartfelt way. Blu’s arc of learning to fly symbolises letting go of his loneliness and accepting love and freedom. He becomes attracted to Jewel not just because she is his only option but because she can fly so symbolically Jewel has every sense of strength and freedom that Blu desires.
The plot device of them being chained together leads to many scenes that bring chemistry between their two different personalities like the scene where Blu climbs the gazebo showing Jewel that his intelligent behaviour can make him a strong force of nature.
The film balances this romance plot with the relationship between Humans and animals particularly Blu’s touching bond with Linda and Jewels character arc of learning to trust the humans. The many other plots in this movie generally fit story as related plots. These include the parallel relationship between Linda and Tulio and Fernando the antics of the city birds that display the spirit of the city and the spirit of birds (ideally flying) that Blu desires and conflict of endangering the species presented by the smugglers and distinctly crafted villain Nigel.
The film is presented through symbolic and breathtaking visuals made up of greatly animated backgrounds and colourful and vibrant character designs. Not to Mention this films use of music really sincs into the animation and story progression my favourite would be Hot wings performed by Jamie Fox and William (Nico and Pedro)
This films Is paced really well so that every dramatic moment and funny moment or detail in general fits in to the story. It all comes together beautifully as a film that captures the spirit of birds and many messages around that in such a great presentation. I sure can go on about this movie but there is still a lot to talk about with the other Blue Sky films.
Overall I may conclude Rio to be the best Blue Sky film. I’m glad you have this opinion because you Cleary see the hidden gemmology in this film that others don’t.

I completely agree with everything you said, and frankly I think it was quite unjust that “Real in Rio” lost Best Original Song to “Man or a Muppet”, and that Rio didn’t even RECEIVE a nomination for Best Animated Feature. It is, without a doubt, one of the most underrated and overlooked animated films of all time.
But yeah, the sequel is trash.

Cody, I ADORED everything about this movie. The story of a bird in chains with another bird of his species! I'd dance my heart out to the Hot Wings song as well (I wanna party, I wanna samba), they've really outdone themselves putting their heart and soul into Rio! It is still a great movie from my childhood and loved it since I was 6. And I think this is the first movie I've known Brazil learns Portuguese too, Cody.

Well known fact that Jesse Eisenberg (Blu) admitted this film was the antidote to his near-joyless role in The Social Network at the time. He worked double duty for both that and Rio by doing the latter on weekends.

I watched this film over and over as a kid. It has never been particularly famous, groundbreaking, or successful compared with similar works of cinema but it was much loved and deserves a sizable percentage of credit for me wanting to work in animation.

Couldn't agree more exotic animals should live where their supposed to live and where they want to live even if you own a big house with lots of room for them to live in they would still think of it as a giant cage. Don't force them from their home to live in yours.
There's a lot more types of pets than dogs cats hamsters, even the farm animals can be pets, I have a pet pheasant named Steve and he's such a ham and loves cuddling.

As of this writing (1/17/22), it's been confirmed that Rio 3 is already in development with 20th Century Studios, but it's unclear if original director Carlos Saldanha is onboard with the project.
For me the best part of this movie is Nico and Pedro’s song “I Wanna Party”
Rip BlueSky Studios 1987-2021. Thank you for making one of the best films. You’ll be forever grateful. Let’s just hope that they’ll continue the Rio franchise without BlueSky just like the Ice Age Franchise are doing.
