Our team danced with Beltane in Ilfracombe,very recently.I can tell you,they are one of the best "Border" teams in the whole Country.Very hypnotic sound with the drums,and violins.....plus a guitar in there!!!

Wonderful performance! In Portugal we have a very similar dance: "Pauliteiros de Miranda", from the far North East Trás-os-Montes. I was amazed to see it has the same type of movements and rythm. It is usually played just with bagpipes and drums. I was told it has pre-Roman origins. Interesting to verify we share a common background.

Later it also became a defence weapon against law men and others trying to interrupt them. That's at least the part I know, hope it helped ye

I think Morris dancing has just slowed down too much,especially as young people tended to mock it,but it was always a joyful dance,a jig!
