Also being 6'-3" and having recently ridden the Dune XR and the Dune RR I think it's safe to say that most riders of the XL frame are best off limiting fork travel to the 170mm spec of the Dune RR rather than the 180mm spec of the Dune XR. Keep the stem 35mm or shorter (and fit some higher rise bars if you must) but I'd agree that the chainstays are not long enough in relation to the XL frame's reach to run the fork at 180mm without feeling like you need to ride with consistent attention to weighting the front end (regardless of what you do with the cockpit). That's a riding position that some aggressive riders and pro racers seem to prefer, but I can't adapt to it. At 170mm of fork travel the XL Dune RR had a more balanced ride with good front traction, and a more synced feel in regard to the fork and shock bearing an equal amount of the work load (I rode with the shock compression one click from fully open on a 502 spring). Also, Mondraker has elected to leave the negative air chamber volume spacer in place on the Ohlins fork. Those familiar with it know that removing it makes it more plush off the top and ride a little lower in its travel like a Fox 38. I prefer more support off the top instead of the added plushness, so I plan to leave the negative spacer in place and fit a 170mm air spring to a Dune XR while reducing the shocks coil spring rate to 480.
The production level is so high that I am barely able to fight the urge to just cancel work for today and go ride in the autumn forest 😇 Well done Rob! (the bike and motor really seem to be that eMTB sweetspot)

@@danehauser8675 Yes, I have short legs, and it kinda sucks! I am 5'8", so for flowy trails having an extra 2" of seatpost hanging out would be ok. However, I live in BC and on the steep, technical trails that I like to ride, (wanna be as low to the bike as possible) that extra stack is a no-go for me. It's terrifying, actually. Just a personal preference thing, really. Like how for some people, ICR is a hard no, I really don't mind it. Once you've had it apart a few times, not really a big deal, imo. Yeah, so for me, no VPP bikes because of this, or any sus layout where the shock goes through the seatpost. Too bad the shock mount doesn't allow for a longer dropper. Also, it seems like your seat could go higher. During your hill climb it looked like you could get mor extension in your legs. Great video as always.

Depends on body position etc - but stock rise was too low for me (25mm if I remember) meaning I had to run them with max height high on the fork steerer which in turn reduces reach.

How tall are you? With the excessively long 485mm reach on L, I'm considering going down to the M even though I'm 6'/183cm. That might also make it more nimble and playful. Or I may go with my original plan and get a Heckler SL, but the Bosch is more reliable.
@ I think the Bosch is really good but I'm coming from normal bikes. I always used to buy L's but not on this one. I have an M. I'm 178 but have really long arms (ape index +5cm). I stopped the standard 30mm stem for a 50mm and now it's perfect. The screen doesn't fit the intended use for this bike and swooped it out for that new Purion one.
@@michielrotgans Thanks! I really think that would be better for me also, as I normally run a 40-50mm stem so a M should be perfect. Were you able to use the stock seat post? Definitely looks like you're not fully comfortable riding that bike Rob. The rear biased weight distribution really makes itself felt on XL and some large bikes. Well done for highlighting this.
Rob I have watched the otb you suffered. The aches and pains take forever - I hope you have recovered - It appeared to have happened because your weight was too far forward, then you turned the handle on downhill and perhaps braked, there was only one unfortunate outcome. Do you think your feeling about it not being very agile, and being difficult to weight the front would have changed if you had downsized to an L like you did the Neat? I am really considering a Dune RR but at 6'/183cm, I absolutely think the M would be a better fit as all of the geo data of the M is the same or longer than my S4 Stumpjumper evo, which already feels a bit long to me. I think a M Dune with a 40mm stem would be perfect for me to make it more agile, and to get a little more weight on the front. I saw in a couple videos where reviewers rode both the M and L Dune and felt the smaller bike handled a lot better. Thanks!
What 50mm rise bars can you recommend? I have a Mondraker Level size M and thinking of changing my current setup (40mm stem & 38mm rise bar) to a 50mm stem & 50mm rise bar for better bar height , but also for better front end weighting.
Even with 450 pound spring the backend seems to active. It really struggled to provide stability and grip. Given we have seen how good the DH rig tracks the ground and if this meant to be same, it would suggest further effort needs probably from a suspension specialist to really dial that back end in. Good video
Careful you nearly baffled me there with your science of explanation ....I've spoken to the lads in design and after 3 long years of designing this frame George says the claims are false .........I can tell you there gutted and have offered to come in Sunday to spend the next 3 years trying to get it right this time .
Sorry Rob....on anything other than smooth bits of terrain it looks close to being uncontrollable. Back end still looks too lively even with the lighter spring and the bike looks very unbalanced front to rear.
Cockpit choice is very personal so you shouldn’t really be negative about the bike for this. Everything is a compromise as you know as there would be 20 different frame sizes, coil springs and stem lengths. Sounds like the suspension is the issues on what should be a great bike.
Seat tube height is a cancer for most big bikes because people who ride it are already big and tall people. They would feel like they lean to much on the bar. Im 203 cm tall and i fully understand this issue. My slash and rail have lower seatube height, but still put spacers under the bar and also changed from stock 27.5 mm to 40 mm rise bar and it felt much better. Rob, make a video for the Scor 6080 Z LT 180/190 travel full powered bike with Bosch motor
Isn't the high rev required to get full power counter productive in steep situations where it can set you off balance, and it's harder to control real wheel traction ?
I'm not trying to cause trouble, but it's funny how people say weight doesn't matter on an ebike. Why are they making lightweight ones? Less power, less battery, and more money. I owned a levo sl and I can ride my levo just as well.
Hi Rob nice video as always, can you compare the dune with the Conway Ryvon Lt? The seems are the only 2 long travel light weight e-bike ( apart from the new trek)
I have a Mondraker F Podium. It’s my favorite bike I own. I think this bike is stunning, and I’d love to ride it, but it’s out of my price range at the moment. I’ll stick to my old Levo for the time being.
Did you notice the motor cutting out at all? Someone I know has had issues with it cutting out and Bosch and the retailer have said there's nothing wrong with it - there clearly is thought!
Lovely bike, but to expensive imo. I have Gen 5 Trek Slash and gen 4 Trek rail both high end models. From riding an ebike for a while i started to come to conclusion, that light ebikes are maybe not the best way to go because the power of the motor also needs to be controlled on the trail. What does that is the weight of the bike, the heavier weight makes the bike stick to the ground and be smoother on the corners etc. On lighter ebikes, it feels like the bike is to light for the power of the motor and the speed that you carry can not only be controlled by the body. Personal opinion, but i think the light ebikes are not the best choice for super enduro. I think it works for trail bikes like something of Fuel Exe type because you dont go ham on those. But on superenduro its different story. Im kinda excited to see how Trek Slash + performs. It has more preferable geometry than Dune. Want to see it soon tested
Good to hear I'm not alone with my opinion about Öhlins. The airshock was about the same speed as in your video - on the slowest setting with already adapted shims. The fork is ok, but far from the performance of the latest ZEB. Öhlins - most overrated brand in the bike world.
I haven’t tried their shock but the ohlins fork blows fox and rockshox out the water. They just can’t stand multiple big hits without spiking like a 3-chamber fork can.
this headtube looks very slim even there is headset cable routing. I know there is only one brake cable but still looks neat! However it will be better for everyone if this cable goes inside the frame in different place than through headset bearing..
Rob, can we just talk about those products shots... seriously, they're like award winning cinematography. 2. Gotta call out the helmet buddy, major space ball vibes going on :P. 3. What do these light weight e's feel like anyway? Is it something where you would never use your regular bike ever again or?
With coil shocks you have a pretty high chance that you need to swap for a different spring rate to get your desired suspension feel and sag. This is a situation where you cant satisfy the needs of your customers, either ship with one standard spring for each size or sell without spring. Air shocks dont have this problem, the lower spec bikes have them instead of the coil shock. I didn't understand the reasoning behind putting on a higher rise handlebar, the front is already quite tall, in combination with reviewing an xl sized frame with one chainstay length for all sizes that means no weight on the front anymore, im not surprised that he lost front wheel traction.
I bet you have the Gen 5 Bosch there testing it don't you 😂 I heard today it's coming in September, someone let it slip when I was inquiring about the TRP A12 EASI
I think mondraker is an eye catching bike for sure, but unfortunately it is not made for the regular Joe / weekend warrior, the sizing and geo is mainly focused on racing, it is an actually really hard to ride it if you are not charging 100% of the time. Beautiful bike but it is definitely not for many people..!!!
Lightweight motor for Lightweight riders! It's hopeless with me over 250lbs I'm sticking to my Cube Stereo with the performance CX I honestly didn't think there would have been such a difference being electric but waw massive difference! It doesn't work or support my weight it would probably burn out quite quick aswell with a heavier rider
I've had the RR version for a month now and can anyone advise if pedalling with the motor turned off feels like pedalling through treacle is normal? This is my first experience of a eMTB and I was hoping that without motor assistance it would ride just like a heavy MTB but there seems to be a huge amount of resistance/drag in the system that gets worse the harder you pedal. Is this normal or should I be taking it to a Bosch service centre to get it checked out? It makes the bike basically unusable if you run out of battery
I wouldn’t have thought there should be much drag. I haven’t ridden a bike with a SX motor but I have ridden a Mahle 1.1 and TQ HPR50 powered bikes and they don’t have much drag when unassisted at all. What I have found is that it “feels” draggy if you have used a high assistance for a while then turn it off. If you ride the bike from the start with no assistance it feels pretty much like a normal bike.
@@streddaz This is riding from 0 mph without the motor switched on. If you pedal lightly it feels ok but as soon as you put power down on the pedals the resistance gets higher and harder. Googling the issue other people have experienced the same but others say they have no issue
@@nickirwin9226 hard to say myself without having ridden a bike with an SX motor. I can ride my old 2020 Levo SL like a normal bike quite easily. I’ve done several reasonably long rides with it off. It feels a bit heavy, but the drag is barely noticeable. I would have thought the Bosch motor would be similar. Have you asked the question on the EMTB forum? There would be a few SX motor owners there I would think.
That was my thought as well. Back in the 80’s when we would put long travel forks on hardtails, we would have the same problem. Also if you look at the Dune lineup, the other models only come with a 170mm fork. The front of his bike looks very high. I’m waiting for my XL Dune RR to arrive, we’ll see how it works.
Not really. You’ll notice I dropped the bars on the steerer tube to preserve reach out the front stock bars I was running all the way at the top of the steerer tube (reducing reach somewhat). Bar height is certainly something that I play around with a bit - on steep DH sections (that a bike like this is suitable for), at 191cm tall, a high rise bar helps. The biggest thing I noticed was the Front Centre to Rear Centre ratio. My rider weight is placed much further rearwards due to the shorter rear centre versus front centre. My hips are quite far over the rear tyre, my torso has to compensate by leaning far forward to place as much weight over the front as possible. Lower bars can help, but, at the expense of rider stability on steep DH sections (rider weight gets pulled forwards if bars are too low) The weight bias changes per frame size, smaller riders get a more forward weight bias, XL riders get the most rearward bias. This can be mitigated with size specific chainstays.

Really don't get the "motor sound" issue... Got a CX and in E-MTB and Turbo it is a little nosey, but I couldn't bother less tbh...I'm concentrated on my steering and riding anyway... BUT what really annoys is my MT7's when they are wet/moist... sounds like I'm strangling a moose or something 😂 hikers look at me angrily and I understand them... embarrassing 🙈
Looks like you need higher preload in the forks, they're nearly bottomimg out over small bumps. Counter-Intuitively adding air can make the ride smoother, since the pressure increases linearly as the fork compresses, adding air keeps you in the smoother initial travel region.
I was I was actually going to sell my Orbea Rise M10 to get this because I actually had a ride on the dune in a car park but tbh I don’t think it’s much better than the Orbea has anyone else tried both ?
In many ways the dune is objectively bad imo (and I own one). On paper I would take the SN everyday. However when looking at bikes I was unable to find any reassurance that the Fazua drive system is getting any more reliable. Many reporting multiple failures, long wait times for replacements, etc. When I tested a Heckler SL at a bike shop and the Fazua failed in the parking lot that was the nail in the coffin for me. That said it is possible to buy a spare system from Fazua to have in reserve if you really wanted. (Crazy idea but the peace of mind/minimizing downtime may be worth it)

Thats standard procedure on coil spring type shocks, you have to settle for a standard setup. The equivalent of adding or removing air from a regular air shock. If you ask me the R and RR models with air shocks and shorter front travel are overall better than the XR, not as extreme geometry and not as overpriced. Wouldn't consider them at full price, but i found some dealers selling the R at 6800 euros and RR at 7500 euros. If you buy them at a discount since the storage of each and every dealer is full and the dune isn't particularly new or appeals to the wide masses you have actually good chances at getting one used or new at a discount

Finding The Truth is a noble endeavour.
Thank you.
The video production is spectacular though.
Hy Rob, which 50mm Riser Bar‘s are you using ?! Thx 👍
Hi. They were Title MTB bars
Nice bike but it’s still DJI’s AmFlow for the win💯
Good to hear I'm not alone with my opinion about Öhlins. The airshock was about the same speed as in your video - on the slowest setting with already adapted shims. The fork is ok, but far from the performance of the latest ZEB. Öhlins - most overrated brand in the bike world.
Dvo is a better suspension system. I've done a back to back on this.
I haven’t tried their shock but the ohlins fork blows fox and rockshox out the water. They just can’t stand multiple big hits without spiking like a 3-chamber fork can.
@@rdyson The DVO then sends the Ohlins home ....
Loic says the same. He would win everything if he wasn't on öhlins.
this headtube looks very slim even there is headset cable routing. I know there is only one brake cable but still looks neat!
However it will be better for everyone if this cable goes inside the frame in different place than through headset bearing..
I really wanted to like this bike when I demoed it. The Kenevo SL still rides much better and the Trek Slash+ looks like it could be a winner.
Is this bike a contender to specialized kenevo sl ?
9:07 hate this kind of trails.
Rob, can we just talk about those products shots... seriously, they're like award winning cinematography. 2. Gotta call out the helmet buddy, major space ball vibes going on :P. 3. What do these light weight e's feel like anyway? Is it something where you would never use your regular bike ever again or?
Sintra ?
Sooo, it’s a super expensive bike that needs to have parts swapped out in order to be set up properly for certain riders?
@@nickirwin9226I've had 3 Bosch CX bikes and they didn't have any drag apart the part you can expect from a heavy MTB
Until universal motors are introduced, frame weight should include the motor and battery.
Ok, so you've risen your handlebars and changed the stem. Isn't this the reason you have problems with weighting the front wheel?
Lower bars can help, but, at the expense of rider stability on steep DH sections (rider weight gets pulled forwards if bars are too low)
The weight bias changes per frame size, smaller riders get a more forward weight bias, XL riders get the most rearward bias. This can be mitigated with size specific chainstays.
looks a great setup personally the front fork needs replacing to a Zeb.Ohlin's is overrated and way expensive get a Zeb or fox equivalent
Seat post insertion looks shocking?
The seat tube size is really an issue….M frame only takes 150mm
You should be out having a surf nice wave !
Love my Dune R,for light + fit Riders is the perfect Bike, with some upgrades it weights 18kg, its my favourite working horse for guiding, by the way,Algarve has some cool Trails- JONYS E BIKE TOURS
Interesting bike, I'm glad we got to hear your honest opinions 👌 Great review Rob 👍
rob i need ur help i just boucht the canyon specral on cf8 with the new ep801 motor but it rattles like crazie wen i go on the smalest of things is it broken or is it normal bicus i broucht it to the dealer and he sed it is fine but my dad has the axact same bike and his is dead silint pls help me
Beautiful 🔥🔥
The bike kind of looks odd on you compared to the Kenevo SL you test rode. IMO.
This a bike that performs better on paper than it does on a trail.
whya re they so expensive, I think around £1k sufficient , look online cube, Haibike etc
Really don't get the "motor sound" issue... Got a CX and in E-MTB and Turbo it is a little nosey, but I couldn't bother less tbh...I'm concentrated on my steering and riding anyway... BUT
what really annoys is my MT7's when they are wet/moist... sounds like I'm strangling a moose or something 😂 hikers look at me angrily and I understand them... embarrassing 🙈
SINTRA!!! not a word about range?? Well... it must be really bad!!
A bike built for people with long legs. Good luck finding those 5’6” riders with 34” inseam length.
600 watts at 100 cadence
nice duracell paintjob😂
Hey, how does it compare to the YT Decoy SN? I'm interested in both but unsure wich one to choose.
Sn for seat tube, rattle, visible motor, and torque curve
In many ways the dune is objectively bad imo (and I own one). On paper I would take the SN everyday.
However when looking at bikes I was unable to find any reassurance that the Fazua drive system is getting any more reliable. Many reporting multiple failures, long wait times for replacements, etc. When I tested a Heckler SL at a bike shop and the Fazua failed in the parking lot that was the nail in the coffin for me. That said it is possible to buy a spare system from Fazua to have in reserve if you really wanted. (Crazy idea but the peace of mind/minimizing downtime may be worth it)
aside from the bike, what an incredible job making this video 💪🏻💪🏻
180mm is Too Long That Front End is Jacked up too Much and Too slack. Not Sure About a Low Powered Long Travel Bike,I Thought You Thought The Same.
Watching You Ride This Your Not A Good Fit at All on this,Foward Geo is Pants if You ask Me
We Need to See How Good that Nicoli G16 is When You Get it Built and on the Scales ?
any new bike with a chain/derailer is no go
Sorry to say, but not with that battery 🔋 🙈 for that price!
Today is my Krishna Birthday I will pray that all your wishes are fulfilled🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🤗🤗🤗🤗🤗🤗🤗🙏🙏🙏🤗🤗🤗🤗🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏

Try not obsessing about super tall look at me handlebars and you might get the front end grip your missing
Mondraker Kenevo SL1.2
Have enjoyed the spot?
Went on all known trails?
Sorry, but that "hard climb/though climb" is a no brainer and really don't use brain to climb that thing...
Next time you're here, I'll show you THOUGH/DIFFICULT climbs... that I doubt you or anyone will do with a castrated ebike
thats one expensive crap bike...wow
That motor noise is crap!
Who wants that if you want to go out, ride and relax?
If ZF can do it then WHY CAN’T BOSCH who’ve been in the game for years
The ZF motor isn't quiet, just a bit different (like a turbine), do you mean TQ?
400wh battery 🤣
Nothing wrong what that. They’re trying to keep it under 20kg. That’s exactly how you do it
first
I'm not going to give 11.000euros and have to change the spring.
Jesus Christ,
Thats standard procedure on coil spring type shocks, you have to settle for a standard setup.
Cant understand why anyone would buy an ebike only to have to spin franticaly like a maniac,,nah
To my eyes, the bike lacks "flow". And it's the bike and definitely not Rob. He's an elite rider.
