Hi Everyone! As Jenna mentioned, there are many drugs which treat anxiety in pets. Not all have to do with Serotonin (though SSRI’s are frequently used for treatment of multiple conditions). Other drugs work on norepinephrine (controlling heart rate and blood pressure so you can run away if scared) and Dopamine (the “feel good” chemical). Tricyclics Antidepressants like Clomicalm are labeled for Separation Anxiety, but we often look to them for some cases of dogs who suffer from repetitive disorders (tail chasing, flank sucking, fly snapping, shadow chasing). There are also alpha-2 adrenoceptor agonist that blocks the startle reflex counteracting arousal (Sileo, which is used for sound phobia). Benzodiazepines (which work on GABA receptors) are some of the most powerful anxiety medications we have (i.e.Xanax or Valium) but they can become less potent with long term use AND can be physiologically addictive; thus we try to utilize them for anxiety inducing events or short term use. One of the newest additions is Gabapentin, which originated as an anti-seizure drug. We believe it works on calcium channels to reduce the release of excitatory neurotransmitters.

Thanks Michelle! and jenna! I've been considering talking to our vet about SSRI's for my boy, since our training has hit a plateau, these videos have been really helpful. I have taken both prozac and sertraline for my own anxiety and found them a huge help (I have weaned off of them now but without I don't think I could have got to where I am now)

Hi Angie!!! I'm so glad you found this video helpful. Remember to keep an open mind about all of the possibilities for medications, not just SSRIs. Though those are common, they might not be right for your dog. Plus, there are many other alternatives available. Definitely a conversation to have with your vet.

Same here, I've already taken SSRIs and now my dog will probably start taking it

Please be aware that the sedating drugs (like Trazadone) may have an ataxic effect. We cannot give eour fearful Great Dane Trazadone because she has "rear end" weakness and with Trazadone on board, she cannot get up, can't walk up a ramp, can't negotiate a step up into the house. Trazadone should be fine for dogs that don't have "rear end" weakness.

My dog powers through gab + traz at vet visits (just during handling) and was just prescribed Reconcile (dog Prosac), so I’m here doing my homework again. 🐾❤️💊

I've found that a lot of vets are LESS likely to prescribe a "dog approved" medication just because they tend to be more expensive (for the client). They prescribe the "human" version which often saves the client a good bit of money. It's the exact same medication (the "dog approved" medication may be chewable), one is just more expensive.

Jan that’s absolutely true. Clomicalm is a brand name made in chewable form for dogs, but is the same as generic Clomipramine (this is a TCA or Tricyclics Antidepressant which hits more neurotransmitters such as Dopamine, Serotonin, and Norepinephrine). TCA’s are an older class of drugs and because they hit more transmitters, there can also be more side effects associated with them.

My collie has been on sertraline for about a year. Also paired with Trazadone. He is reactive to other dogs - although not aggressive to them but you would think he was going to take a leg off - also bikes, skooters, large trucks, vehicles with trailers, sometimes cars but not always. I backed their suggested dosage down because he began to sleep startle and come at you in the dark literally teeth gnashing until he kinda woke up and realized what was happening around him. I would not say we have made a lot of progress with the meds. We tried Prozac first but he literally wouldnt eat enough to get a med in him. Appetite has been an issue on the sertraline as well. When he decides to eat its almost bulemic but he will go most of the day just drinking water and then eat in the evening when coaxed. Never know what will get him to start eating either. He will not go in the vet office. Could not get him to go in the vet behaviorist office either. Car trips have been minimal but we can do it now. I am going to have to get him muzzle trained just to get a vet visit for shots. Poor guy is just always on. I think I need to find a new vet - maybe a smaller practice- where he does not have any connection to the site. My puppy trainer told me cryptically that I was going to have to ‘watch his focus’ because he wouldnt follow through with training activities. I have had a number of dogs and this one is the most challenging - you never know what they will be like but he is my ❤️ and I will keep working on things with him.

Once again, please make sure your vet is experienced with prescribing anxiety medications. With aggression, in particular, the drugs can result in INCREASED aggression.

    • @michelleborchardt199

Jan Hankins Increased aggression has been sited in literature, though we frequently use Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors (SSRI’s) to pets with aggression issues primarily because anxiety is a rocket fuel for aggression. Fear/anxiety can lead to irritability and the feeling of being “unsafe”. Aggression is a reaction to get distance from something scary.
