Guitarist and frontwoman Marissa Paternoster and her longtime rumbling companion, “King” Mike Abbate (above left), took some time before their gig at Nashville’s The End to breeze through their minimalist (and gnarly) setups that are low are pristine and high on volume.
Guitarist and bandleader Marissa Paternoster has played G&L S-500s since she can remember. She got her first S-500 (above) as a gift from her father when she first started playing guitar. She’s not much for tinkering because she likes these models as they are, but had put in a Seymour Duncan Hot Rails in the bridge. However, she admits to not liking the sound of the pickup and generally plays in the middle position.
Bassist “King” Mike Abbate has had a longtime love affair with this Rickenbacker 4003. No mods have been done to the bass other than the popsicle stick that keeps the neck pickup in its place.

First and third best live shows I've attended. Patternoster is as fierce on stage as she is awkward in person.

I love how a lot of the time, the more legit a band is the more streamlined and utilitarian their setup is. In a world filled with tone snobs and pedal junkies, it's really refreshing to see some folks who just love to play and only give a shit about equipment as far as the straightest line to the sound they want to hear.

hivemonkey3 I mean when you're on a tour you don't want to mess with your gear. When you're writing on the other hand, either you have a sound in your head that you are looking for, or you want to be inspired by interesting gear. Different philosophies for different situations, and different people.

I know exactly what you mean. That is partly why I have only ever really been an acoustic player. I've always just LOVED the sound of an acoustic guitar and nothing beats the feel of it to me. I just love to play.

Marissa is a legendary bad ass. It’s so hard for a rock band to be an original anymore, seems like it’s all been done before sometimes. They restored my faith in new music when I discovered them 5 years ago.

Marissa, who absolutely rules: "I am not a fan of reverb."
Me, who (ab)uses reverb as a way of hiding sloppy errors, imperfect palm-muting, and string noise: "Yeah, that makes sense."

In Ethiopia the Coptic Prayer describes how Christ was crucified with 5 nails, named Sator, Arepo, Tenet, Opera and Rotas
By repositioning the letters around the central letter Ν, a Greek cross can be made that reads Pater Noster (Latin for "Our Father", the first two words of the "Lord's Prayer") both vertically and horizontally. The remaining letters A and O represent Alpha and Omega, the Beginning and End, the omnipresence of God. It's the origin of the Lord's Prayer and the Christian Cross. The Sator Square is a four-times palindrome, and some people have attributed magical properties to it, considering it one of the broadest magical formulas in the West. She has the square tattooed on her arm.

I saw them a couple weeks ago and they sound amazing live. Mike's sound is just massive. They don't need another guitar player, he anchors it all perfectly. I was floored at how great he sounded with a simple setup. Makes me look at my pedal board and wonder what I'm doing wrong.

  • @IPushHard
    @IPushHard 6 років тому +29

    Hell yea!
No, I'm not holding up the metal (rock on) fingers, but I like this band.
Marissa is one of the most interesting guitar soloists on the planet, and the band sound is chaotic bordering on gloomy mayhem. I hate describing sounds cuz a cat may pee in my cab.
But really...and seriously, if there were actually life anywhere on radio anymore I could see this band making enough cash to retire comfortably.
I wish that were the case.
There is no radio life to be had however, so the bands who are out there touring and pushing out new music are really heroes.
They aren't getting a nice salary, benefits, or a retirement pension for doing what they do, and with no hope for a big record deal what's the motivation? To start a career in physical labor when they become road worn? ..cuz that's the reality of it for a lot of (especially touring) musicians.
But at the end of the day, it's obvious they do it for the love of the music...and for us.
So to all you guys who are going from stage to bus or hotel and then to the next stage?
    THANKS!
