MARI-JADE is 24 and from Winchester. She started experiencing spasms in her legs and arms when she was 18. Initially doctors put it down to anxiety but after a night out, she experienced paralysis in her legs and the left-hand-side of her face froze. Doctors thought she might have been spiked but after spending three-and-a-half months in hospital, she was diagnosed with Functional Neurological Disorder (FND). Due to the condition, Mari-Jade was having 30 seizures a day but after therapy, she now experiences up to 15 seizures a day including absence, chronic or sleep attack ones. Her memory doesn’t go completely but she said her memory jogs and she can forget her name or birthday but after a couple of hours/days, she’ll remember. She experienced periods of paralysis and had to learn how to walk again after a particularly bad episode in September 2020. Her dog Gracey is her best friend and has even saved her life on multiple occasions. She has said that she is grateful for the amazing community of people around her.

This really made me 😢 I have multiple sclerosis and I found out because I became paralyzed basically overnight and I was 19. I’m so happy she’s trying to live her life and she’s not letting her disability control her. People don’t know how lucky they are and instead of judging, they should be thankful!! I think it’s so disrespectful to tell someone “they don’t look disabled” but there are people in the world that can’t help themselves. I really hope she gets control of her seizures. They look so scary and extremely dangerous 😢
Daily remainder to spread positivity
I agree completely. Gratitude is as important as intention in this life.. otherwise it becomes so easy to lose our light..to lose ourselves and our way. When I am stressed, resentful, or feel myself depressed or heading in that direction, I slow muawld down and give thanks for every little thing. Even the most baaic of things because we take them for granted when we forget how much harder life would be without them. This is what keeps me going when life is it's hardest on me.
I thought about the same thing. I too have multiple sclerosis and some of her symptoms really speak to me.
I'm often told "oh, you don't look disabled", or "you seem to be doing great today".
Looks can be decieving...

What kind of surgery did you have? I am also epileptic too and also have many seizures of a wide variety. My medical team can't nail down what kind of epilepsy that I have. I am a preparing to spend two weeks in the hospital for a variety of tests and brain surgery. I have anywhere from one to 20 seizures a day. I live in Canada 🇨🇦 where our health care is fairly good.
@@jenniferwhite746 I had brain surgery at yhe Cleveland clinic in Ohio. My seizures were caused by an inner ear infection that spreaded to my temporal lobe when I was 6 months old and over the years it had caused scar tissue to develop which worsened my seizures. The surgeon's removed the scar tissue about 7 or so years ago and I've been seizure free ever since. Do you the doctors know the cause of your seizures or are they doing an exploratory surgery?
@@bigjohn1253 sorry to interrupt your conversation, but I find it quite interesting you say that yours was cause by an inner ear infection and scar tissue. My daughter had fluid on the ears when she was younger. It was finally rectified after I demanded for something to be done. She had grommets and then she could actually hear. She started having absences 19 months ago, then three weeks later, had her first tonic clonic seizure. She has been diagnosed with Juvenile Myoclonic epilepsy and despite being on 12 tablets a day, is very uncontrolled. I'm wondering whether this is what has caused her epilepsy. She was 12 when she was diagnosed, and her neurologist and doctors and paediatrician know she had ear problems as a child and have never told me this could be a reason. Thanks so much for this information, I will be asking them to investigate my daughter further.
It’s really amazing that dogs have the ability to recognize seizures and when they’re happening. Ugh what an awful thing to go through and live with. But what incredible strength to continue to do so and to share her story.
I can’t imagine suffering from this, but even more so to be continually called a liar and not believed about something happening to you. That has to probably be the worst part
I can imagine . It's so scary . I started having seizures in late December early January, and eventually a.strome with no known cause in may . It's scary when things happen on your body that you don't understand and can not explain .

Omg this is so crazy! I’ve just been referred to a functional neurologist because I suddenly became paralyzed too!!! Some of my symptoms come and go but my weakness has developed all over my body. I’ve been undiagnosed for over a year and a half now. It’s been such a devastating life changing event. Nobody knows what’s wrong with me and now I’m also being referred to a place that deals with mysterious illness. Sending all my love and support to all those who are suffering 🙏💖🙏💖🙏💖🙏💖🙏💖🙏

I’ve got fnd and not many people know about it including doctors, a lot of people get mis diagnosed and left there not being diagnosed for years, I got ignored by doctors when I was having tremors in my legs in hospital and one of them even said “get up and walk”, I was 9, u can’t just tell a 9 year old to get up and walk when I clearly couldn’t, long story short I get tremors in my legs and weakness in them, wishing u luck ❤💕

I can't imagine going through something like this. It also made me angry that people judge you because you quote "don't look sick." Well, I have disabilities being born with a birth defect. On the outside, to many people, I look fine. They don't know what I deal with medically. Same with you. You never know what someone is going through. Bless you and thank you for sharing your story.
When I got sick with severe Rheumatoid Arthritis I remember a co-worker who was a therapist who asked if I wasn’t just b n a hypochondriac. I was so sick and couldn’t walk and he asked me that question. He ate crow when I got the diagnosis and he did apologize but often I look fine but nobody knows the severe pain and deformities I endure and have acquired. I am always sick but unless I am struggling walking I may look fine which isn’t true. I even get looks when I park n handicapped spaces because people don’t realize that I may walk into a store fine and not be able to make it out fine in a matter of minutes. Now I am not fussing because these viewpoints r normal because we as humans judge with our senses, mostly our eyes so for those of us who struggle let’s give people a pass and educate if possible. I just told all of my coworkers that I am hearing impaired because of this disease and nobody knew but it was time for me to share that I wear hearing aides and that I need help sometimes. It was hard to do but I am glad I took the leap to educate. It is okay sometimes
All people who say/think "they don't look disabled" need a reality check! I've got a degenerative disease that causes a lot of pain and cluster headaches which are insane and although I don't look disabled I am not ok. Just remember there is a big net of what's disabled from not too bad to really severe but all deserve compassion and respect.

I used to have frequent seizures so the statement she made about trying so hard to not let it happen really hit home. I know how that feels. They used to come on at the least convenient times. I had more out in public than at home which was VERY embarrassing due to having bladder and bowel incontinence nearly every time I seized. Never qualified for a dog or anything to help though. Not was I ever paralyzed. Temporarily maybe but never long term.
Love her and her mum for being so brave and being there for each other. I suffered a stroke close to 10 years ago, and have still not regained all of my ability, I don't think I ever will. But it's all about getting better and never losing hope. Please try and incorporate as many movement based activities as you can in your lifestyle. The brain recovers miraculously with it, trust me. Iam a dancer, and do have progressive peripheral neuropathy, but dance has helped me maintain control of my extremities. As much as is possible. Good luck to you, beautiful woman💜
A very brave young lady. Puts my life in perspective. I was having one of my pity party days for myself today and saw this video. Good reminder to count my blessings and be grateful for my health.
When I feel I'm struggling or if I feel "my life is getting too hard" or if I'm in pain (i have a chronic disease but honestly it's veeeeeen mild slightly annoying if anything) i watch this videos and these people inspire to give my best. You always see them with a smile on their face and talking about what they CAN do rather what they can't. Watch one this vids a day, your depression will improve (not cured duh, but helps a little, it's therapeutic).

I can completely relate to what she is going through. In March of 2018 I slipped into a coma for almost a month. The doctors told my grown kids that my brain wouldn’t stop swelling, and for them to plan my final expenses. I was blessed that I came out of the coma, but quickly found out that I now suffer from seizures and panic attacks. I have had times when the seizures caused me to not be able to walk, or function normally. I pray for the both of us that doctors will find something that will stop our seizures, and my serious panic attacks. 🙏
That sounds incredible. You are young healthy people and all of a sudden.... this can happen to anybody anytime. Those who are 100% alright can be sitting in a wheel chair tomorrow. There is a Scripture in the Bible about a time yet to come : lsaiah 35 : 5, 6 " At the time the eyes of the blind will be opened and the ears of the deaf will be unstopped. The lame will leap like a deerand the speechless will shout for joy."

In spite of her condition, she is a symbol of regardless of her condition, she lets us know that we will overcome by the grace of God within us.

Has Mari-Jade considered a service animal? I think that would definitely be something that would help regain some of the independence she lost. Do they offer financial assistance to get service animals in England?
Yes, that would be not only so helpful, but so healing! These animals xan be so incredibly expensive though. Butbaje has a following and could kost likely raise the funds! But at least she has her one dog that does help and has saved her life before. But a dog that iabtraijes for it would be less stressed than how her dog gets when she goes through a seizure as showed in the video.

She has one? In this video she shows the dog and it barks when she’s having an episode and helps her by laying under her head when seizing. I would consider that a service animal.
As someone who also has physical disabilities and chronic illness I myself have lost count of how many times people have told me .."Well you do not look disabled". What does someone with disabilities supposed to look like? People can be so darn ignorant and judgemental. They have no idea what we go through on a daily basis and how difficult life can be last thing we need is being accused of faking our illnesses, chronic pain or physical disabilities or conditions. I wish this young lady all the best and hope that the treatment she is currently trying will help her to control her seizures.
Oh darling, my heart breaks for you, and also for your mother. My daughter doesn't have FND, but she does have epilepsy. Uncontrolled epilepsy. Everything your mum said is absolutely true. It's heartbreaking to watch your child in a seizure. It's even more heartbreaking when we as mother's can't prevent these seizures. I feel guilty when I can't prevent my daughter from falling and hurting herself, resulting in an ambulance ride to the hospital. I'm so glad you have a beautiful family who love and care and support you. You should be very proud of yourself for being so determined and strong.
It always makes me mad when people say, "you don't look disabled." You never know what's going on in someone's life, so I don't think it's okay to say that someone doesn't look disabled.

I used to work with a guy that had epilepsy that would cause him to black out very much like this. You'd be talking to him and within a couple of seconds he would just drop to the floor. It would take him a good 20 minutes or so after walking up to realise who he was or where he was, it was really scary at times. A few times he would even black out whilst cycling to work, luckily he's never had any serious injuries.

You must've been so afraid that first episode of seizure n paralysis. Don't waste your time with those that say you don't look disabled. The only thing that matters is you..you living your life the best you can with your illness. It's good having support. I hope things will turn out better for you.❤️
Literally what is it with people and hate…she is so strong..really it’s scary what she’s been through…but she keeps getting stronger and I’m proud of her…
Thank you for sharing your story with us. I could see some of the light and the dark within her life. The light when she’s with her brother, just chilling and living life in her backyard with her dogs and enjoying the nice weather outside, fading into the darkness when she randomly has a seizure and her brother drops everything to comfort his sister. To the gray area when everything ends up alright and she regains her consciousness and her train of thought. Even though it was scary, she got up again. Even though she doesn’t know if she might end up blind, or paralyzed again after this seizure, she faces another day and is grateful for every moment. Doesn’t mean some days will be harder than others, but she continues never the less. In a sense, that’s how we all should strive to live life. Because we never know what the next second holds.
Her story will inspire others to push through life.

Plz try yoga. There is some thing called anulom vilom. In India people have even cured their cancer while practising yoga for years. Do anulom vilom. Watch it on UA-cam by swami ramdev. If you do for two hours daily you will see the results within a year or maybe before that. God bless you. I wish people knew about these yogas more :(

I have several chronic illnesses that have left me disabled and the thing I hate most is people telling me I don't look disabled. As if disabilty has an image.... it irks me!! Some days are great and other days are miserable and I need a wheelchair to get around out side of the house if I'm even able to leave home that day. So if anyone reading this takes something from it, please, please don't judge someone's disabilty by how they look because disabilty comes in many different forms

Twice my brother-in-law became paralyzed after having seizures. The second time he was in the hospital for months. He still has seizures today and has to be watched carefully. He has other special needs and is so sweet. I myself suffered with seizures for a long time. Mine is controlled by medication. I to was told I did not look disabled. I just had to Stop ignoring people. You are an inspiration.

That's so interesting I've known people that have done EMDR fortrauma and I was looking into it with my therapist as as well I never thought of it for somebody that had seizures.
I have however been sitting next to a friend that went into a full body GM seizure and it was the scariest thing I've ever seen so God-bless her..

Crazy how the disorder just happened all of a sudden. The brain is a mysterious organ. I too am dealing with neurological issues (although mine happen right after I got the vax). It's Horrible. I'm not having seizures, but constant vertigo and headaches that happen all of a sudden. It sucks not have any control. I hope her treatment works 🙏🏾 ❤️

Don't get down on yourself this condition is something you can't control. You have a beautiful smile and soul. Do all you can to keep up your spirits. I know it 's hard but your still here by God's grace and mercy.
I believe that you will walk even more than you are at this moment. Believing in the impossible can be possible.

It’s hard to not be down when you have fnd, I’ve got it, i can’t control yourself, I can’t ever control myself, it’s a permanent condition and I got it and a young age for the condition, I got it when I was 9, I spent the whole summer just so doctors could ignore me and force me to stand up when I clearly couldn’t

Oh man I cried when she had some of the seizures. I have a 24 year old daughter who is me tally disabled, she started having seizures about 2 years ago. Her seizures are finally under control with 2 anti-seizure meds. It took ages to get to that. I really feel for you. Be strong!

When she said she was so tired after the seizure I could tell it was not just physically she tired of it all. I cried when she started seizing. I hope she pulls thru this.

She's seems like a really nice person. It's difficult to have this condition this young, but she's overcoming it really well with her loving familly and pets !
If I can give her a recommandation:
Throw all the hate comments in the garbage : you sufer a condition, you didn't choose it. When something is not a choice it cannot be critized.
What we could comment is how you handle the situation and you handle it extremely well, you seem to have an awesome life, take care and enjoy !

I also have FND, was diagnosed about 7 years ago when I kept having seizures. I went into a period of remission and then they came back and haven’t gone away. Other symptoms I have is bladder retention, blindness, I can go unresponsive, lose feeling in my legs, trouble swallowing, nausea and vomiting, dystonia and severe tics.
