    Love the national honey show, I've listened to The sustainable apiary it feels like hundreds of times and queen rearing also. I'll try to find you in all that busy beekeeper hive going to feel like a hive just a buzzing.

    As the weather cools it is my experience that the colony moves upward in the boxes to take advantage of the rising warmth. Two boxes over winter has bees basically in the top box only. We have a pollen flow mid winter from natives mainly golden wattle, and it is a life saver saving a lot of feeding.

      Sound observation, and totally to the point but inusually try and overwinter in single deeps , so we will be removing the top box asap, carefully. If they have moved up, may be reconfiguring the frames a little bit that very issue had crossed my mind. But in a good way and a bad way. Thanks for your comment!

      I am aging so I try to keep it as light as possible, this is why I use 8 frame deep Langsroth instead of the 10 framers that I have hundreds of. As long as they aren't totally full I can manage to lift them, but generally it is a frame by frame affair. My son is the beekeeper nowadays and I am in retirement, having just a dozen or so hives to play with. because they are only 8 frames I winter with two boxes but generally speaking I could make do with one until pre spring. It is amazing that officially there are only four seasons but for gardeners and bee keepers things are entirely different I.e. Pre spring, the awakening, followed by, spring (swarming season), and main honey flow. then summer, then dearth, then fall, or pre winter mostly weeds, and ivy, then a check and a final feed to get them through the following season, winter.@@richardnoel3141

    Hello Richard I know you said your hornets was way down but how did your new traps work out. I thought that was the reason you were saying they were less at first . This season I added 40 new supers to my operation this year but I checker boarded them all an got every single one of them filled out an full of honey plus all of my older frames . I had the best season I have had in a while. Our temperature here on the east coast in the US are going to be down to about 40 lows an around 60 high temperature. Can not wait to see your new extractions line up an running . Thanks

      Like you it’s been a really good year, I am
      Installed in my new building and also got some honey and got my numbers back up with 130 nucs made also. Re the hornets, only two apiaries where there is a few but it’s way way better than last year and to be honest I can’t believe it!! Same here, can’t wait to get the machine running also!!

    Hey Richard!! Thanks for the video. I had a great experience this year using the queen trading technique to manage my varroa. I also treated with OA dribble before releasing them queen. You mentioned that you also apply OA vaporised in December. If I don't vaporise in Dec, can I apply a thymol treatment in early spring? Thanks heaps, see you at the honey show!!

    How come the hornets haven’t been a problem have they all migrated to uk ….

    • @richardnoel3141
      @richardnoel3141  9 місяців тому

      We’re still not exactly sure but we think it’s connected to the virtual 6 weeks of easterly winds thst pegged down the essential spring temps for the emerging queens but also blew a whole bunch over the English Channel to the uk !
