Pretty good for something done at the time 2k3 was new, XP was new tops. The dialogue may seem a bit cheesy and sometimes repetitive and forced, but considering how at the time we only had a few translated jrpg games and not much idea how to make good game dialogue yet, it is pretty well-done. Kellogs did act weird when he arrived though, and how he was talking to Cross at the forest, you get the impression he expected the new inspector to be just a paper pusher given the job through connections and with zero idea what to actually do.
I remember rediscovering my first PC at my parents house long ago. It had RPGToolkit projects on it. I don't even think I was 10 years old when I was tinkering with it. Of course, when I rediscovered the pc, I was excited but the importance of keeping the hard drive and files got away from me at that time I guess. Who knows where that stuff ended up. I remember using RPG Maker 95 too back when Don Miguel was a common name. Its always cool to revisit old projects - if you can. Fun times.
Reminds me of an RPG from the days of the SNES. As someone who has only used RPG Maker 3 (PS2) and currently RPG Maker MZ, I wish teenaged me could have started back then and made great looking projects like this.
loved this vid! rpg maker 2k3 is probably my favorite game engine, even to date. something about the old aesthetic and the limitations really speaks to me
I totally get that, even if I were to buy a newer RPG Maker product I'd personally still be drawing pixel characters and tilesets for it, because I too prefer that SNES aesthetic.
Awesome video! I always find it really fun to look back on my old RPGMaker games, it's a sweet time capsule of your childhood mind. Yours was much better than mine HAHA
This looks amazing. I've made games in RPG Maker XP, VX, ACE, and now MV. I really love your map layouts, unique designs. Scrolling map intro animation diagonally! with large fancy text displaying entering map scenes. Lots of work!!
Many game engine now utilize non code eventing like what rpg maker does. Unreal engine for example has a method called blueprint which is somewhat similar to rpg maker eventing. Although if you know how to code like javascript for rm then that would go along way.
The 1980's game creation system, "Adventure Construction Set", had a very primitive version of eventing, which made use of custom spaces and what I like to call doall (do-all) spaces. A doall space will invoke an "Activate all things in this place", which basically activates all custom spaces stacked beneath it. Here's one example: Disease, which consists of: Doall Space Custom Space that increases the player's Health by 10 temporarily Custom Space that decreases the player's Health by 10 permanently What this will do is cause the player to end up with the same amount of health that they had before stepping into this stack; but then that player's health will tick down by a few points each turn until the full 10 points have been taken away.
Enjoyed the video 👍🏻 Also the intro kind of reminded me Chrono Trigger at the very beginning. Not sure I would have enjoyed playing the game though, with the narrow paths and the enemy balance. Can't help but wonder what would have happened if you used the skills in the beginning and run out of mp before you gained extra tonics from slimes
Thank you! Yeah if the slimes hadn’t dropped mana tonics the player would be likely unable to continue playing! 🤣 The whole game is full of bad ideas….
I like a lot your game. I dont talk english very well. Yesterday I have done the same as you, and I start uploading two 16 years old games that I made in 2007, using rpgmaker 2003, but with the old graphic from that year. Both games is at portuguese language. Seems like the old makers like us is ressurrecting at 2023 :)
So cool! I used a workaround back then, giving the enemy a status effect labeled their name, so when you point to them it shows you... well... their name. ;) Rm2k3 was a great time for rpg makers.
Wow, I think I downloaded that guy’s RPG Maker 2000 rip and immediately got a computer virus so I deleted it and decided I’d buy it from an importer. Didn’t get to buy 2000 but did find RPG Maker 2003 and bought it for a crazy amount. 😆
I was making an rpg maker game in a demo version when I was 13 years old 13 years ago, I finished a whole tutorial style island even though I didn't alter any gameplay, set up cutscenes and everything, only to have my hard drive corrupt :(
So this came on my feed today. I don't think it was that bad. Maybe a little basic but it seemed more put together than some of the games I've seen gone to market recently.
You're hard on your writing but I don't even think it's bad. Like the "If physical attacks do no damage, try magic, and vice versa!" It made sense to me! Just saying 😆 It actually looks like a very nicely made game overall, and from the looks of the size of the first castle and first city, looks to be quite large too. Great job. Also if you still have the software, you could always patch in a final landing point for the intro bird. 😎
Thank you for these kind words. It’s very very very… very hard for me not to be super self critical. You’re right that with some more work it could probably be pretty good. Just a matter of finding the time…
Maybe it seems like an obvious lesson now but I think the point of "Enemy that can only be (significantly) hit by 1 characters magic attack, so Character A has to eat all their MP and Character B has to twiddle" being a bad design is an important one
Eh, I don't think it's that bad so far. Especially by presumably a teenager. Like, you programmed a little opening cutscene and everything! I've had MV for years, and I'm slightly jealous because I'm not up to par still.
I own all the rpg makers on steam I love playing other people games they made. would you happen to have a download link to your game? or is it for sale?
Thanks! Yes, just announced on my community channel that the last part of this playthrough will be the next video on this channel, and I'll figure out a way to make demo available to download when I release that. Hope to get that video up this week.
Would you be willing to watch a short video tutorial? Trying to figure out best, fastest way to communicate that kinda thing. Too bad I can’t copy/paste code out of RM2003 or easily post screenshots.
Did you program the battle system? Or which plugin did you use? By the way, I really enjoyed the demo. The terrain is especially well composed. I'd like to see more of it.
Whoa. Didn't realize they had a side-view battle system like that by default. I imagine you put your own custom back plates in? I'd be really interested in seeing the process for setting all that up.
Yeah, IIRC I created a new map, drew the background using chipsets, took a screenshot, and then set that screenshot as the background. I've gotten some other technical questions like this, so after I publish the rest of the series I might have a QA video or a QA stream. Think that would be helpful?
your shit way too good i didint know for the japanese sites, i was using images with text for cutscenes and bastardized sprites from fallout and other places even porn games as i only had sprites i could find on local sites or shop in paint. also yes i would survive torture just not to give you to play my rpg maker game

Yeah I feel like this was better than many RPG Maker games, of any version, and any release year.

Really cheesy, but charming little game! I'd watch more of you digging through your past game.
Thanks for watching! When I feel a little better I will definitely publish another segment
Agreed, I would love to see more of this game. It has a lot of promise.
The cutscene is pretty cute with the bird till it vanished
Right? Where’d it go?
I should name one of my characters Kellogg too, loved them frosted flakes as a kid
🤣
Cool video! I still have some of my old games I play from time to time. All completely unfinished, but still pretty fun to look back on!
Enjoyed the video 👍🏻

Oooooooh god this is some nostalgia right here. My personal version was vx ace but I sure did try to make an rpg regardless 😂
It’s hard work
@doubleback4ammo that it is, it was fun though. I still enjoy going back to mess with rpg maker every so often for the fun of it

I love this. Thank you for the upload. Game engine, or not; you made a game and published it. More than I can say...🤣
Thank you!
I prefer the graphics in this version of RPG Maker than any of the subsequent ones..
Yeah, I just noticed that most other RPG makers use chibi graphics which is an obvious downgrade
They say the little bird was spotted flying down i35 towards burger king. They have the best fries a bird can get.
The 2003 rtp is so good.

The closest thing to RPG maker I had as a teenager was Adventure Construction set; and I did make a few games with that.
Very cool man! Maybe you could try and make another game this day using RPG Maker and see the differences between the two games.
You made a really good game! It looks professional.
So this came on my feed today. I don't think it was that bad. Maybe a little basic but it seemed more put together than some of the games I've seen gone to market recently.

Hello! Could you tell me if you know where I can get books about RPG Maker like the one you showed at the beginning of the video?
That one came with the game. There might be some on Japanese websites but finding them would require good Kanji reading, which I certainly don’t have.
If you think your RM2003 was Bad, You haven't seen MINE! I was ALL OVER THE PLACE with it., but it was fun though!
I bought rpg maker 2k3 a few days ago, and I wanna make a game like that! It's so cool!
If it's fine. May I download it so I can see how it works?
Sure. I think the download link is in the third video, though.

Is it me or do the assets remind me of Ara Fell?
Probably, these Refmap graphics were widely overused

Hahaha
What game is the random battle theme from?
It’s a free MIDI from an old Japanese website called Freedom House 2nd making music for RPG Maker
