The Purge Full Series Retrospective | A Comical Look at American Dystopia
The Purge is a series that has been flailing about, surviving on the typical Blumhouse strategy of low budgets on safe bets for years, but differs from the typical Blumhouse picture in being comically high-concept. The breakout hit for Blumhouse was Paranormal Activity, a microbudget horror movie that consists largely of pots falling off shelves, marketed so well that two hundred thousand became 20 million for audiences of teenagers who needed a place to make out without mom coming in. Since Paranormal Activity they’ve largely stayed in similar lanes, with franchises like Insidious, Sinister, Ouija, Unfriended, the Facebook ghost movie, but not the other Facebook ghost movie, because there are two, M3gan, and the evil teddy bear movie, but they also have a long running, micro-budget, high concept action, horror, home invasion, sci-fi, speculative fiction, political allegory genre fusion franchise that chugs along off a concept people take the bait on. These movies started as dumb political allegories, and have only gotten more brazen, silly, and, frankly, exploitational, and will very likely have their last hurrah this year, as with orange man bad running for office one last time, it’s safe to say this franchise will peter out for good unless something drastic changes in how these movies are designed, and I’m gonna cash in hard on it. The Purge series is dragged around on a concept so insane and convoluted that I will have to consistently come back in order to point out that the concept is so poorly thought out that every movie in this series has to jump through hoops to even appear sensible- in the near future of 2014 [Harvey Birdman Clip] the economy collapses, and the totalitarian New Founding Fathers of America take over, despite the fact that the country is in no way run as a totalitarian state, and in the distant future of 2017 [Harvey Birdman Clip] they enact The Purge, an annual 12 hour overnight jamboree where all crime is legal, which successfully gets unemployment down to 1% and revitalizes the economy. There are only a few stipulations, no explosives, because they would be too expensive to film, certain government officials, like the president can not be killed, and uh, that’s it- I have no idea how these rules are enforced, because uh, police and fire department do not operate during The Purge, and despite ALL crime being legal, the only one people seem to be interested in is murder. Nobody ever takes a plane and crashes it into a building, nobody buys a gun with a bump stock, and perhaps most fascinatingly, nobody commits major theft or financial crime- you could walk into a bank, take a million dollars, and nobody could stop you, the economy would be in shambles, complete chaos, but it never occurs to anyone. Instead, everyone goes straight for killing, and oh boy, they try hard to justify this one, but we’ll get to that. The premise is terrible, needlessly high concept, for a silly reason, we’ll get to that, and if you can get through one of these movies without a nagging feeling that it’s the stupidest thing you’ve ever seen, you may want to get checked for a concussion. I haven’t even started talking about the movies yet

I think what you’ve said about gen 3 being the ideal sweet spot for Pokémon learnsets and coverage is very accurate. Distinctly remember in DPP having my staraptor learn close combat and realizing we’ve truly jumped the shark lol. That gen really started the moveset homogeneity train with busted moves like stealth rock and u turn being so widely distributed, when they really should’ve stayed a lot more exclusive to their respective types to bolster their niches.
great review

Really great series you have going on here. HGSS kicks ass in a lot of ways but I almost forgot how the series’s visuals mostly peaked here and arguably in 5th Gen (which has some higher highs but lower lows imo) I stopped playing new entries after USUM and while the 3ds entries look decent it’s really a shame how hideous most of the switch titles look based on the footage I’ve seen of them. Pokémon was never a graphical powerhouse but for all their visual shortcomings the games have always been really nice and easy on the eyes. Just can’t wrap my head around the games being developed for increasingly more powerful hardware and somehow looking worse than they did 14 years ago.
@@SenorPuffball TPCI has strict deadlines that are immovably tied to anime and merch (card) releases which makes everything a rush job. Rushed 2D is less work than rushed 3D.
@ I sympathize with the devs for sure on that front but it is still disappointing for what’s supposed to be one of Nintendo’s marquee franchises. It’s not really something I dwell on though. Voted with my wallet and didn’t bother with any of the switch titles. Only real regret with that is not being able to experience the heavily streamlined process of getting competitive ready Pokémon. Spent way too many hours in gen 6 especially IV breeding lol
Sonic boss mechs have always been a favorite of mine for the series, not because of gameplay obv, but because of aesthetic design. I pray everyday we someday get a “build your own eggmech” app or game

I totally understood it. When I saw the people storming the capitol in the election year movie I knew and then later the girls ear being shot and she came back stronger with vengeance. Also, a female and male running for office. Lastly, the fact that this movie was made in 2016 when Trump became president was like he said...deep political subtext.

It’s a good read, you can grab the audible too. I don’t mention the AB much but it’s cool, voices, sound effects and music from the films!
They need to let Genius Sonority cook once more. I'd honestly rather have another game in this style than a mainline one.
Yo
I think my big problem with this game is that the gimmick levels can sometimes be fun but only depending on the context. For example the jet ski levels are a nightmare to get all the boxes in for the gem, but they’re probably the most fun to do the time trials in. Underwater levels have the exact opposite problem lol. Still extremely impressed with the game overall though despite its lack of focus. The programmers apparently had to develop like 4 brand new engines for the gimmick stages and even though they fall flat in a lot of ways it’s hard for me to knock the devs for feeling a bit bored with making nothing but on rails platformer stages 3 years in. Great review 👍
This, along with the hard mode in Hotline Miami two, is one of those games that are extremely frustrating to play, but have their moments, mostly because of their style, that make you think about them more than you actually played them. Coincidentally, they both seem to be a critic towards violence in video games
Am I the only person who appreciates the genius of this retrospective?
Star Wars Revenge of the Sith is the best movie in the Star Wars saga, the most accomplished, everything is incredible, extraordinary, from the space battle above Coruscant to the sunset on Tatooine, including the superb cult scene in the galactic opera with Palpatine's speech, the tragedy of Darth Plagueis the sage, the battle against General Grievous with Obi-Wan and his death, which marks the end of the war, the incredible scene of Order 66, a magnificent scene, emotionally charged, very dark, magnificent, the dramatic tension is breathtaking, the emotional stakes, the extraordinary diversity, the duel at the top of the Senate between Yoda and Darth Sidious, Darth Sidious launching the pods at Yoda, the fall of Yoda symbolizing the fall of the Jedi order, the battle on Mustafar between Obi-Wan and Anakin, the end of their great and beautiful friendship, Mustafar represents hell for Anakin, the place where he will literally be consumed by the dark side of the Force. Many cult scenes, cult lines, the best characters in the Star Wars saga, Anakin Skywalker, Obi-Wan Kenobi, Padmé Amidala, Mace Windu, the culmination, political plots, Palpatine takes his place in the Senate, founds the Galactic Empire by faking a coup and turns the clone army against the Jedi, it's dark, beautiful, sad and dramatic, yet gripping and exciting, the incredible cast actors, Ewan McGregor , Ian McDiarmid, Natalie Portman, the music Battle of the Heroes, Anakin's Betrayal, the story of Anakin Skywalker is the greatest story of all time, he tipped over to the dark side of the Force wanting to save those he loved, George Lucas is a genius who drew inspiration from the greatest hours of our history to create the Star Wars story, including the political rise of the Nazis, the Greek tragedy, and the fall of the Galactic Republic, the creation of the Galactic Empire and the Rebel Alliance, all of which tie in perfectly with the events of the original trilogy, a great, superb epic, magnificent and dramatic, a great Shakespearean tragedy set against a political backdrop, giving full meaning to the name STAR WARS, an extraordinary episode that brings the best Star Wars trilogy, the greatest Star Wars trilogy, full circle to the saga by linking perfectly to the original films of the 70s and 80s, the conclusion of a masterpiece. Padme Amidala's death is also a magnificent scene, set against the birth of Luke and Leia and the creation of Darth Vader. Obi-Wan Kenobi, who will return Leia to her adoptive parents and Luke to his aunt and uncle, the Tatooine sunset. The music is sumptuous. Anakin entering the Jedi temple to kill the young padawans and the Jedi, the rescue of Palpatine right from the start with the spaceships puts straight into the plot. Everything is so exceptional, so extraordinary, so magnificent and so cult-like from start to finish, and George Lucas's direction is at its apotheosis. Revenge of the Sith is the apotheosis of the Star Wars saga, the perfect conclusion to the prequel, to the Star Wars saga and also to George Lucas's work.

Ludisolo. Needs rain dish ability, Ev trained in special defense, hp, and speed, Then given leftovers. Rain Dance, Double Team, Giga Drain, & Surf. Use RD or DT depending on the pokemon, then use the opposite the next turn, leftover and rain dance give health back if you get touched, then spam double team and use Giga drain if you need health, eventually you become immortal and can surf everything to oblivion. In doubles you can make Ludi Ludicrously Strong. He doesn’t need to use rain dance or even better… Get you a Ninjask, speed iv and ev make it the fastest Pokemon in the game. Spam the fuck outta double team till it’s got maxed speed. It’s other Evo has wonder guard as its ability so it’s only hit by super effective moves. Use baton pass at max speed and it gives all the stats to whoever you switch too making them completely untouchable. Have these two out at the same time and the opponents have to focus one and get fucked by the other or just be fucked by both. Get two more straight tanks and baton pass to one if they try to hit the ninjask or shedinja. Say you don’t teach Ludi dt and instead leech seed, swap to an untouchable Ludi and seed em, you get Healed by Rain, Seed, Lefties, And can use Giga if needed, also Surf is stronger in the rain making an Untouchable God of Water of infinite health
The Ninja can also learn a move that gets stronger every time you use it so if he’s untouchable and you spam that attack you can easily start to solo with just him. Baton passing the maxed stats is the best tho because whoever you swap to can’t be hit and if they are chances of it being a 1HKO is rare so they’d have to be extremely lucky to kill or even get a second and final blow in.

Oh, oh, so we are copying Ghost Rider eh, Hollywood? Zarathos was the angel of vengeance, was in hell and gave Ghost Rider his powers.
Art was more terrifying in All Hallows Eve, yes, he was less brutal there, but he was weird enough that you got disturbed by him, he was also supernatural as evidenced by an artist painted him after weird dreams and how he stalks the babysitter in All Hallows Eve and enters the house of her charges without anyone noticing.
@@TheSpawnfan Yeah, the simplicity early on was more interesting than the lore stuff later
Weird how this got two sequels, Art was already terrifying in All Hallows Eve, by this time i was under the impression people would get tired of the gore. Yeah, not the first time Art killed children, All Hallows Eve ended with a babysitter having discovered Art killed the children she was looking after, by sliced throat, and Art made it clear through body language he could have killed her, but spared her because that would make her suffer more, while she was your typical teenager, she did care for the children, and Art knows this, nobody knew how, but he did.

Omg hgss are just like gsc but better graphics and movepools. They're my favorite. Try them.
I do strongly agree that OG RBY’s charm and jank make them more interesting to return to than FRLG, with some parts of the presentation of the originals just being straight up better than the remake like the music. But as far as being a remake goes, I think the games are actually better than HGSS since despite their blandness they admittedly fix pretty much every problem RBY had, and HGSS is still plagued by the awful level curve of GSC, which for what’s essentially the third revision of a pair of games is ridiculous. Not sure if I’d say FRLG are better games overall than HGSS though. Haven’t gotten to your HGSS vid yet but great video man!
