    Great video my friend. I still use my little Fostex x30 cassette multitracker and it still sounds great. Kind regards. Paul.

      @@TheHomeRecordingChannel the Fostex X-30 was my first tape machine back around 1990. I used it to make records with my friends in my parents barn. They are very cool little machines. I've owned a lot of Fostex gear over the years and it's all really good. Thanks so much! I work really hard to make the videos.

      @@TwinCreekAudio of course! I’m 33 so I started in DAWland with, like, Ableton 5 (?) and then over the past two years or so, I’ve slowly been relying on more and more of yesterday’s great gear. I appreciate the tonal qualities and the restraints but I also just like touching knobs and plugging “stuff into stuff”!
      Anywaus, I do have a question if that’s all right: I’m new to mixing with tape. I recently acquired a Fostex R8 and am considering getting a Ramsa WRS-4416 to use with it. There are no tape returns as far as I’m aware and only a stereo tape out. Do you think it is worth considering something like a Fostex 450 to get these in/outputs?
      Thanks!

    • @TwinCreekAudio
      @TwinCreekAudio  5 місяців тому +1

      @@_Out2Lunch that would be the easiest way but you can use line inputs on 8 channels for the tape machine. Then use another 8 to send to the tape. As long as you use different channels, you still retain some of the functionality of a recording console. So channels 1-8, using direct outputs or insert if there are no direct out to the tape machine inputs and 9-16 coming back from tape machine outputs to line inputs.

    Heh heh, ultimate home studio in the 90s, too. I bought a Fostex Model 80 8 track R2R (with remote) and Fostex 350 8x4x2 mixer in 1994 from two different pawn shops and later bought the meter bridge for it. The pawn shop with the Model 80 had a mixer at one point, but I guess they sold it. In 1995, I found what I think was that mixer at a used music shop, a Fostex 812 12x8x2 mixer. That set up served me well through the beginning of the 2000s, but I wanted to go to a DAW and stopped recording. Didn't get the DAW until 2008. I transferred my old reels to the DAW (as well as my mixdowns which I had recorded to MiniDisc). I still have the old gear, including the Fostex 350. No reason to get rid of them, but it is a shame that they're collecting dust.

      I always seem to like older Fostex gear. My 450 came from a pawn shop where it has been neglected for years. Brought it home for $30 and it still worked 100%. I worked at a studio supply company in the late 90s and I remember there being an 812 in for repair. I always liked the look of that console too but never got to use one. The 450 I have sounds and works better than you'd expect. The faders are not smooth anymore but they work and aren't noisy. I sold my R8 awhile back but I liked it a lot too. I still have a MSR-16 though

    sounds great, i like how you show your entire set up and with great detail. great buttery guitar tone - is that mostly from the amp and pick ups?

    • @TwinCreekAudio
      @TwinCreekAudio  2 роки тому +1

      The guitar is just the custom Strat with some pretty inexpensive GFS Brighton Rock pickups. These have custom Brian May style switching but this video is just the neck pickup alone through the Hotone amp which I also really like. Mic was a cheap GLS ES-57 which I really like on toms and guitar amps. Thanks for asking and let me know if you have any other questions. I try to answer every comment when I can.

    Hello Twin!. Im mix engi from RU and few week ago i decided to change my INB to OTB. Now i have Eurodesk mx9000 from Behringer, 24 channel in and out puts. Dats my start gears. I want to say thank u for discribing how to connect everythink OTB. I dont know why u dont have so much followers, oh, sryy i know, everyone looking for videos like this *Mix u track for 5 min* but not how to mix OTB.
    I understand 1 more thing. Analog world is expensive and difficult thank Digi (ITB), in this way not everyone can buy stuff 4 this.
    Thats why if u see guy with analog mixing console and other outboard gear, u should know - he'"s PRO)
    Thank u my , i ope, Friend.
    With Best Regards, Artem (Tom)

      Thank you! I don't advertise so that's probably why my channel has grown slowly. I would like to have more subscribers and views as I am trying to help people understand analog gear and how you can use it with digital gear. I plan on making more videos about this soon. If there is anything you want learn in a video, I will try to make a video about it. I am planning another video to follow about OTB mixing very soon. Thanks again!

      @@TwinCreekAudio what i already understand:
      1. If u have console 8/12/24 channels u need audio interface (ad/da converter) with the same out and in puts on it.
      2. OTB mixing more expensive than ITB. U need cables, outboard gears so much space for ur console.
      I hope at the end of june or middle july, ill work fully on my console. Now im waiting my 2 audio inteface with 12 in/out channels on each interface. Cables (with out jacks) on the way too)
      My next plan, after set up my console, is to buy some outboard compressor and few effects, to work fully outboard.Just summing in DAW.
      Thank u for urs work and videos.
      On Russian UTube there is no videos about Analog mixing, thats why i found u channel. Just searched on english about Analog Mixing.
      With best regards, Tom!

      Thank you! I actually just sold my Fostex R8. I still have the 450 and I kept my Tascam 16 track. The R8 is a very good small tape machine but sometimes I have to cycle some gear so I have new things to make videos about. Any of the vintage Fostex mixing consoles should be pretty good for hybrid mixing if they are in good condition. I really think the older Fostex gear is underrated. My 450 works perfectly and has individually switchable phantom power for each channel which is a super impressive feature for the price and time. It was made.

    Thanks for all the videos! I also have the R8 and now also the Fostex 450. Wanna finally set up everything, so i can record fast when i wanna.
    How do you set up the cabling? Do you use the direct outs to the R8 and then back with tape in. Is the direct out "pre-fader"? Than how do you control the input level into the R8?
    How would you integrate a hybrid set-up including the R8. I watched you other video about hybrid, but it doesn´t included the R8. Sorry for all the questions, but informations about the 450 are really hard to find.
    Thank you very much for all your work and time answering!

    • @TwinCreekAudio
      @TwinCreekAudio  8 місяців тому +2

      Thank you for your comment. I'll try to explain the best I can. There's also an older video I'll link where I set up the R8/450 combo. The direct outs are post fader so you would control the final level to the R8 with the fader. If you connect all the direct outs to the R8, you can record to the 8 tracks from each of the 8 channels with the signal on the channel recording to the same track on the R8. If you want to combine more than one source to a single track, you would use the subgroups, connecting the subgroup outs to the R8 inputs instead of direct outs. Then assign the channels you want to combine to the right buses you've connected to the R8. You also need to pan the channels odd or even to go to just one subgroup or pan in stereo if recording to a pair of tracks. The master outputs would connect to inputs of the mixdown recorder(audio interface inputs or another tape machine) to print the final mix.
      Here's a video where I set something like this up:
      ua-cam.com/video/9txm61eVXpw/v-deo.htmlsi=qGtKc78W0Ix9Icsc
      Also Aux 2 when switched to tape is like a separate monitor mixer so you can hear the tracks playing back while you overdub and and changes in the level for your headphone mix don't affect the levels going to tape. I hope this helps.

    This is a great video, i watched it a few times to absorb all of the information fully. I’ve recently purchased a fostex m80, and i’ve been looking for 8 channel components to complete my hybrid bedroom studio.
    I’ve realized the Cranborne Audio 500r8 could be the perfect (albeit expensive) solution. What do you think of this concept? Cranborne Audio 500 r8 with at least 2 preamps to start and slowly build my collection as i can . Would take me some serious work this summer to afford myself the 500 series interface but i think it would be worth it and could be the perfect and expandable centerpiece of my studio
    that you for your response to the previous comment i left, it was very thoughtful i appreciate you and your channel

      The Cranborne Audio 500r8 looks very good to me. I have not used one but I have a few 500 series preamps. Most of my gear is older used equipment that I have bought used. I would love to have a Cranborne rack for my digital setup. It is a very nice hybrid way of working. I think it would work well for you. It is also something you can add more preamps or analog processing to in the future. Good luck and let me know how it works if you get one.

      main thing, you have to have fun for what you do.
      as far as it goes about analog to digital, yapp, that's an audial difference. i still favorite the analog.
      don't wanna say much about myself. in short, 'v been a studio and stage sideman for about 50+ years, now retired.
      so, i've subbed to your channel to see what u do [analog wise] and [maybe] sup the channel a bit. ;)
