You may certainly do that, at times grinding them together spoils the taste due to onion tasting bitter... doesn't happen always though
Onion needs to take more time to cook, because the smell will no go easily and your gravy will be raw. So cook onion first and then add tomato puree.

Definitely Sudha ji, you may reduce quantity of red chilli, or use kashmiri red chill which will not be very spicy and will help with the colour :)
